    • Huge Improvement over round dehydrator

I have had this dehydrator for 2 months now and have run at least 2 dozen cycles. I had a round stackable dehydrator that served me well, but I now do more than it can handle. The round shape is not really conducive for dehydrating as it wastes a lot of space and for fruit leathers make them an odd shape for storage. The rectangular shape on this dehydrator is able to fit a lot more stuff. I have made apple chips, dried sweet potatoes and beets, fruit leathers, and beef jerky. It has all come out great. Had to do some trial and error on the temperature and times due to the larger batches, but I have now used it for a couple months and have dialed in the times and temperatures for most of the normal stuff I dehydrate. I love the timer function. My last dehydrator was just plugged in so you had to be around at the end of the drying time to unplug it to stop or risk over drying stuff. Now I can start something at night and have it end on its own in the middle of the night and then unpack it in the morning. So much better. The metal trays have worked great and are easy to clean. They seem to be well constructed (ie I haven't seen any broken welds). I run them through the dishwasher to clean them. No rusting or coatings. Apple chips pop right off whole with no problem. I did some strawberries that stuck pretty good, but I think the problem was I did them too thin and they all broke off in pieces than coming off whole. Will eventually try again next year during strawberry season. Beef jerky (marinated sliced steak type) comes right off, no sticking at all. I bought some fine mesh plastic trays to use just in case, but haven't needed to use them yet. The dehydrator dries things pretty evenly regardless of where it is in the machine. I have loaded all 7 trays with apple slices and as long as they are all the same thickness (definitely need a mandolin slicer) they dry evenly regardless if they are in the front, back, top, or bottom. I have not needed to rotate a tray for any of the stuff I have done. ... show more

I've used other "budget friendly" dehydrators in the past and a few things that they all had in common was they looked cheap, felt cheap, and overall just didn't do a very good job. Not the case here. To be as inexpensive as it is, the Magic Mill works great, it's simple to use, relatively quiet, doesn't take up a ton of counter space, and comes with everything you need to get yourself going, and it looks and feels super high quality. We purchased this Magic Mill Pro Food Dehydrator specifically for spices that we grow in the garden. It has worked very well for that purpose. Usually takes about 36 hours for spice leaves to dehydrate, and then we place them in a chopper and they come out like store-bought spices in a jar. Makes great holiday gifts. We have also tried making jerky with the machine, and it worked well but with all machines you have to keep an eye on the jerky to make sure it's at the consistency you want. Only negative I have with this machine is the settings. For some reason it gives you only a certain amount of seconds to set temp and time, then they all go back to zero and you have to start again to program. Not a huge deal, but annoying. A real positive is that it is relatively quiet. It also looks nice and fits under your cabinets, so you can keep it on the counter at all times if you have the space. It would be great if this came with a nice book detailing how long and hot you should set the unit for different items (spices, fruit, meat, etc.) but it really doesn't provide much direction at all. You'll need to search online or just trial and error for recipes. ... show more

It's easy to use, quiet, has digital temp to the degree F, and time to the half hour. I've dehydrated figs, habanero peppers, bush beans, and bananas so far. There's plenty of room to dehydrate maybe 6-8 sliced bananas. I would warn you to set up a carbon filter nearby, or good ventilation, if you're planning on dehydrating hot peppers and are sensitive to fumes. Also be mindful of filling your home with hot pepper fumes if you have pets. It can get VERY uncomfortable in your home if you fill it full of hot peppers! I bought a bunch of extra silicone trays since I think it only came with 2, and you should always keep one on the bottom of the dehydrator to catch juices. It's a simple machine, but it doesn't need to be complicated! I put the dehydrated habaneros in a blender and pulsed them a few times to make hot pepper flakes. I cut ~2mm wide slices of banana to make crispy flakes perfect for cereal or by themselves. I'm also pleasantly surprised with how well the bush beans worked - they snap! Overall, this is a fun and useful gadget for which most people will find lots of uses. ... show more
