  • Nice set of features if you can reliably connect to the controller -updated - OK on 12V
Style: SP108E
For a "nothing special" light string controller, this has a lot of features that could be nice. But, the unreliable networking solution makes it unusable. Perhaps it's the controller, perhaps it's the app, but between the two one has to constantly go through the entire reinstall process repeatedly to change the lighting. First, AP mode is useless unless you want to constantly switch your phone's wifi connection, and even then it does not reliably connect. You often get "device is busy" messages. Second, STA mode is how most people will want to use it, but the app takes a long time to think about it, then you MIGHT get the controller listed, and then if it is listed, you MIGHT be able to enable it. Many times the app does not find the controller and when it does just lists it and does not allow connection to actually control anything. (SEE UPDATE BELOW) One more item that makes this less than useful for permanent installations: there's no obvious ability to turn all the lights off while the controller is still running. That should not be a special task, such as sending all "black" to the string. The network issue makes it a terrible solution. UPDATE ----------- Because I need a wifi controller, I experimented with this device to see if I could get it working. Bottom line is that network connectivity works quite well when running at 12V. It is NOT reliable at 5V, but I think the manufacturer probably knows this. I suspect the problem is with their on-board voltage regulator that needs a higher voltage to produce a solid 5V at the ESP8205 wifi chip in their design. ... show more

  • I was not impressed and sent it back.
Style: SP105E
It may have a lot of listed patterns, but they are only varying in speed and direction. In reality, there's only about 30 different patterns. They are not very complex either. Aside from that, in the short use that I worked with, it did operate as designed.

  • Mediocre app.
Style: SP108E
The device is probably working as it is supposed to. But a user experience is limited to the app user interface. So I'm going to provide my opinion on the smartphone app. The pre built animations work just as you would expect. The annoying thing with the app is that it wouldn't remember the IP address of the controller. Forcing you to scan every time you open the app. Now it will remember your last used strip configuration, such as how many lights and segments. The color wheel provided doesn't allow to get very specific with color gradients. Would be nice to punch a particular hex code to get the color or something. Smart assistant integration would have been helpful but given how the app is designed ( to work locally) perhaps that's a long ask. Would love to address each segment separately, that's huge miss. ... show more

  • SP-105E works but completely dependent on app control and sensitive to brown-outs
Style: SP105E
The controller is sensitive to having the LEDs pull too much current and leaves the controller inoperable until a full power cycle to do a reset. This results in disabled bluetooth and weird partially-lit strips. What you need to do is either get a very strong power supply to ensure it doesn't scramble the controller as the lights come on, or more practically disconnect the lights from the controller so you can get a stable bluetooth connection for initial setup. Once you can actually connect to the controller, you'll want to configure what light strip you are using (e.g. I'm using SK6812 RGBW, with color order GRB) and how many LEDs you have (e.g. 300). It will remember all these settings (and the color mode too) between power cycles. The fix for an underperforming power supply is to turn down the target brightness in the app before you connect the lights. Then you can play with the different animation effects until you find what you want and experiment with turning the brightness back up to see what your power supply can actually handle. The app is pretty clunky though, you're just picking a numbered mode out of a list with no particular way to filter colors/effects. Or you can use a color picker to get a specific constant color. You can set the speed of the animated modes. That's about it. No buttons on the controller to toggle modes without the app. ... show more
