  • Solid and Powerfull Machine.
A must have for the your sanding needs (Big Or Small). well balanced less noise than many others, yet it performs stronger than over $1000 Jet Sander.

  • Poor Quality and Design
The Rikon 50-144 1 inch belt and 8-inch disc sander is poorly designed and has bad quality control. After receiving the Rikon and washing the gunk off the tables, I started putting it together – we don’t get tools these days we get a kit to build a tool – and I immediately had trouble with the treaded holes in the castings lining up. I lined them up after removing a screw and moving wires. Putting the guards on around the disc was extremely hard. My wife put more than one screw into place as my hands were too large for the space. Overall, assembling the unit was difficult, time consuming (over 4 hours), dirty, and frustrating. I put on the disc and the table and noticed they were far out of alignment. The disc actually hit the table at the right side, but was nearly one-half inch off at the left side. There is no adjustment for this problem. I put a square on the critical areas of the castings and BOTH of them were not at 90 degrees. I called Rikon and was told to loosen the nuts on the underside and move the carriage. Since the table and the disc support are all one mass of iron it would do no good to move the entire platform. We could not make this clear to the technician. He finally said he couldn’t help. Since both the disc housing and the table are ground improperly, replacing the table would do nothing. The handles press the table side piece and the housing for the disc together. They both must be 90 degrees. And there is no adjustment for the distance the table sits from the disc, only the angle. The handles to loosen the two tables hit obstructions and cannot be turned completely around. The disc handle hits the vacuum port, and the handle for the 1 inch belt hits the table itself. The handles have a kind of spring loaded button on top. You press that device and pull the handle up to move it to a new position without engaging the screw mechanism; however, pushing the button down is very hard. I couldn’t do it without using a screwdriver in the slot of the button. I loosened that screw nearly all the way out and still could not easily push the button down. Thus, moving the tables would be a huge hassle. The vacuum ports are not any size I am familiar with. I have two shop vacs, one with a large hose and another a small hose (Sears and Shop Vac), and neither came close to fitting. How can you operate a sander without some dust control? Amazing. The quality of the unit is substandard, at least at the price being charged. The disc is aluminum, the iron castings are rough and not smoothed out in mating areas. The base is bent metal about 1/8 thick and the cast iron parts are attached to this metal platform with bolts. I could not run the machine without removing the disc table. The machine ran smoothly enough, but it was pretty loud. There was vibration, but I did not deem it excessive for a sander in this price range. I did not sand anything. The machine was not bolted down and was just sitting on a bench. I decided the Rikon wasn’t for me. I’ve never bought a Rikon product, I usually choose Jet, so I thought I would give this a try. Now I think Rikon is overpriced, has poor customer service, is poorly designed, hard to assemble, and of generally poor quality. I am trying to return the machine. AD2 ... show more

  • Wanted it to be good...
This is an overview of this specific tool which I purchased at woodcraft, but they do not allow review of this specific item so in an attempt to for warn potential customers I am writing this. Once I got it home I started to assemble it, the instructions are good and it is easy to assemble. I was immediately unimpressed with the quality, but thought well it may be better than Harbor Freight... wrong. As you know if you are looking at various brands this design ( though it could easily be improved) is widely used in many brands not much apparent difference from Grizzly, central and so on. As I continued to assemble one of the table locking mechanisms was faulty as it would not lock. The tables do not tighten to a proper angle most noticeable with the 8" ALUMINUM plate I had to grind down the table to get the edge to line up so it didn't pinch the disk. So thinking that the quality wasn't great I guess I must be paying for available customer service. I sent an E-mail and got a quick replay requesting my serial# which I sent back quickly. I got an automated response so I forwarded the email to parts and to tech. No replay in over a week and I got this machine because I have need for it. So now I am stuck with an angle grinder and and clamps trying to get a straight edge. At least with Grizzly you can get essentially the same tool probably a little better quality for a little less $ or get something that works from Harbor Freights since you have to modify this thing to line up anyway and save a lot of $, plus if it doesn't work I've never had an issue with getting a replacement item rather quickly. I have always seen and wondered about Rikon tools like the 14" bandsaw which I was very close to getting, but after this I have no qualms about paying a little more for a Laguna 1412. Your experience could be very different than my'n, but in my opinion even they are a little cheaper than some other brands you are still overpaying for a lower quality tool. ... show more

  • Not so great.
The media could not be loaded. I too purchased mine from Woodcraft. Was looking at the jet but at $150 more and as little as i use it I could not see the extra bucks. Saved even more by catching it on sale. Got it home and looked good in the box. The instruction were weak. They call out numbers and them use letter to label on the instructions. I worked my way thru it. I have a grinder that was made by them and was impressed with the quality, not so with this one. Cheap parts and not a very good fit. There is no adjustment on the 2 in belt and it is what it is. Which in my case was not great. The slot did not square up the backing plate so it looks funny. After grinding the area touching away, not me the belt did it when I first turned it on, it does OK. Makes a heck of a noise when running not really sure why. high pitch and scary. I am stuck with it. I am not sure what I would have bought. Maybe the jet would have been a better investment but $400 is a lot and there really is nothing else to chose from. Probably my last purchase from Rikon. ... show more

  • Not acceptable for metal grinding.
I also purchased my sander from Woodcraft mainly for use in my knife making hobby. Had some confusion with assembly but was able to complete assembly in about 2 hours. After a few hours of use, I started noticing a roughness and small pieces of black melted plastic coming out of the unit. Found that the two lower belt wheels had melted and deformed spots. Appears the wheels melt when sparks from metal grinding strike them. Timon is sending me replacement wheels but said they did not have any other types of wheels and the replacements would probably do the same. This unit may be acceptable for wood work but I would not recommend it for any type of metal work. ... show more

  • Do not buy this product!
Terribly cheap product. Plastic pulley set screws strip out. Bearings on drive pulley for belt side made noise within a week of operation. Terrible dust collection ports. Pay the extra and get a Jet.
