  • Sustainably great shampoo
Style: For Fine, Flat, Limp Hair
Until I found this Ethique shampoo bar, I had never thought about all the industrial chemistry in regular shampoo. The chemistry is no good for your hair, while soaps contaminate surface water and threaten the existence of many wild animals. My old shampoo had 17 ingredients, mostly soaps and salts, with only 2 natural safe ingredients 9 (honeysuckle extract & aloe barbadensis leaf). The other 15 ingredients were industrial chemistry. In my experience, if you can't pronounce it, you shouldn't rub it onto your body. In contrast, this Ethique bar has 17 ingredients, none of which are environmentally destructive soaps & 7 are natural ingredients, including cocoa seed butter, coconut oil, lime oil, cinnamon bark extract, ginger root powder and epsom salt. It's also palm oil free, which helps to reduce giant palm tree plantations in developing countries to sell palm oil to Western companies instead of growing their own food sustainably. I use the Sweet & Spicy for fine hair and I love it. It smells great without being overpowering. One caution: it is a very soft shampoo bar. So you have to set it up to dry after showering or it will stay soft and tend to melt. And it cleans great. I wipe the bar across my wet hair 2-3 times then wipe the bar dry and it lathers up easily. And the bar lasts a good long time: I shampooed daily with it for 5 months (157 days, to be exact, sometimes shampooing twice a day in hot weather) until it was gone. So if you are looking for a great natural shampoo bar and love your Mother (Gaia, that is), this is the bar for you. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Ethique Shampoo/Conditioner Bar Gift-pack for Dry-Flakey-Itchy Scalp
Style: For Dry, Flakey and Itchy Scalps
Instead of liquid form ... one bar for shampoo and one bar for conditioner ... it cleans well, non-drying affect on the scalp ... the soap conditioner is natural & light ... the shampoo soap has a natural lavender scent. This combo soap set keeps the scalp/hair clean ... reduces scalp itchiness ... due to the purposeful natural ingredients. Looks like the soaps will last awhile, even with daily usage ... both soaps spreads & lathers quickly with water. A very good buy ... will buy it again. ... show more

  • St. Clements is the holy grail for combo hair
Style: Clarifying for Oily Hair
I’ve tried literally 20+ shampoos to try and tame my hair. I have particularly difficult hair (very thick combo curly/wavy, oily/frizzy medium porosity) and have been on a quest for shampoo that actually makes my hair manageable. This shampoo bar completely cleanses my hair of oil and product/mineral buildup and still manages to not strip my hair completely of moisture, which in turn makes my hair less likely to tangle and reduces frizz. I wouldn’t recommend this for everyday use but i only wash my hair once a week ideally to prevent hair damage. Within two weeks (two washes) I have noticed my hair is a lot more manageable and generally less oily. Even after a few days my hair is still not overly greasy. The bar has a mild citrus scent that is not overwhelming at all as approved by my scent sensitive family. The scent still lingers enough that I have gotten compliments two days after I’ve washed my hair about how it smells. The bar lathers absolutely incredibly, you only need a few passes of the bar through your hair and three seconds of scrubbing for it to start really foaming, my hair was undoubtedly engulfed in suds while I was washing. They are not exaggerating about the concentration of this bar- you really do need significantly less product than with conventional liquid shampoo. The only thing I really have any problem with is how soft the bar is. You have to be careful not to grip it too hard or scrape it with your nails or anything because it will dent. It doesn’t fall apart though! It can also take a fall in the bathtub as far as I can tell. For such a soft soap it’s important to keep it ventilated- a draining soap dish or equivalent is a must. Anyways, good product. ... show more

  • Good shampoo with a learning curve
Style: Dry Hair
TL;DR: This shampoo works really well, even as someone with thick hair. Smell was a little weird and it doesn't last as long as the company claims, but once you get the hang of it, it's great. Full Review: I decided that I would try to cut some of the disposable plastics out of my life once my city limited what you could recycle, and one of the changes I'd heard about people making was bar shampoo. I decided to try it out, and based on the reviews on here, I decided to try the Frizz Wrangler shampoo, as I have very dry, frizzy, curly hair (Somewhere from 2A-2C, I'm not good at figuring out which one exactly). It has been color treated with a semi-permanent purple color at the ends at the moment, and because of that, I usually only wash/condition twice a week. As far as my impressions of this shampoo: The good: - It cleans my hair. Plain and simple, it does its job as shampoo. - It lathers well. I kind of doubted it would, but once I got the hang of it, it generates a good lather! - A little goes a long way. My sister used to complain all the time that we went through shampoo about 4x faster when I was home because I need so much to get through the built-up oil in my thick hair, but I don't feel like I need to use a ton of this to get it through my hair. I just swipe it over a few parted spots on my scalp, then rub the bar over my hands and massage it into my scalp, and it gets it very clean. - You can feel good about not using plastic bottles The bad: - It took me three times longer than usual to shampoo my hair the first time I used this, because I couldn't get the hang of how to get it on my hair. Now that I'm used to it, it doesn't take as much extra time, but it is still more time-consuming than regular liquid shampoos, at least in my opinion. - I've seen no added benefit of this being "Frizz Wrangler" shampoo. My hair is just as dry and frizzy while using this shampoo, but that would have just been an added benefit to me, so I wasn't too upset about it. - The smell is strange, at least to me. It does have a coconut smell, but honestly, there's something else that's just weird (I wish I had a better way to describe it, it's just not good haha). Not exactly a deal breaker, but something to keep in mind. I can't smell it on my hair at all, at least. - Storing the bar can be difficult. I personally bought one of the (admittedly expensive) containers Ethique makes for their bars, and that works well, but without that, I'd have a hard time finding a place to keep this, and I know some people don't want to spend the extra money. - There is no way this bar will be the equivalent of three bottles of shampoo. At most, it would replace two, which is still not bad, for the price, but I don't really think it's fair for them to advertise the way they do. The only other note I have is that I don't think this shampoo is particularly color-safe. I didn't see any more or less fading than I did with normal shampoos, but I definitely noticed dye washing out of my hair when I used it (semi-permanent, so no reason for concern). That's just something people should be aware of when they buy this. All in all, though, I think this is a great, environmentally-conscious shampoo that definitely does its job. There are some issues with it, but cumulatively, it wasn't enough for me to take off more than a star, because all of them were fairly minor things. If you're considering switching to this, I definitely encourage you to do so, at least to give it a try! ... show more
