Description

This is not your grandmother's pressure cooker. After two generations of busy cooks employed pressure cookers to prepare family meals, the next generation with memories of valves dancing and hissing on stove-tops then snubbed pressure cookers. Now pressure cookers have come back, those old valves replaced by modern versions that ensure safety while delivering the speed, ease, and nutritional benefits of pressure cooking. This heavyweight 18/10 stainless-steel beauty is a fine example of contemporary engineering and style. Its mirror finish gleams, and its black handles stay cool. Its spring valve doesn't hiss unless too much steam has built up and the heat needs turning down. Two other valves offer backup safety, and the top automatically locks until all pressure has been released. Pressure-cooking traps steam to heat foods at temperatures higher than boiling. This cooker has an aluminum disk sandwiched by stainless steel in its base to speed the process even more through fast heat conductivity. Little water is required, so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. At 9.75 inches diameter and 3 inches deep, this 2-1/2-liter (2.65-quart) cooker resembles a deep frying pan. A waffle pattern on the bottom releases food quickly after browning. Cleanup is a bit involved: hand wash the cooker, rubber gasket, and lid with a mild detergent; lightly oil the gasket. Minor cleaning inconvenience, however, should not overshadow the major convenience of pressure cooking. Accompanying the cooker is a 92-page pressure-cooking recipe booklet. --Fred Brack From the Manufacturer Whether you are cooking soups, meat, vegetables or potatoes, or even sterilising babies bottles, everything is more relaxed with the Kuhn Rikon Duromatic pressure cooker and itis up to 3 times faster than conventional cooking methods too. Risotto in 7 minutes? Crme Caramel in 10 minutes? No problem with the Duromatic. This 2.5 litre Kuhn Rikon Inox Pressure Frying Pan with long handle has a timeless design, is easy to use and is a practical classic. The aluminium heat-conducting base is especially thick and ensures rapid and even heat absorption on all heat sources, including induction. Three safety release systems and stay cool plastic fittings are all included in the design for your safety in the modern busy kitchen. The interior of the pan features and 2/3 fill level indicators. You can brown meats in the pan before the lid is locked on, or use the pan without the lid. Easy positioning triangles allow you to close the lid with the minimum of fuss, whilst all models in the Duromatic range feature the fully-automatic locking system which prevents opening while there is still pressure in the cooker. As the food begins to boil, any air present in the pressure cooker will firstly escape through the spring-loaded pressure valve and then the valve cap will move up. The pressure indication lines become visible and you are able to cook effortlessly at low (0.4 bar) or high (0.8 bar) pressure by adjusting the heat. You can then just enjoy the peace and quiet and once your food inside is ready, the pressure can be released in three safe and easy ways. Cooking with the Duromatic takes about 1/3 of the usual cooking time, with an energy saving of up to 70%. This saves you money and is also good for the environment. Vitamins are sealed in, instead of boiled away, vegetables keep their bright colours and flavours are so intense less seasoning is needed. Pressure cooking can be daunting, but the Instruction Manual included with your new purchase includes an extensive table of cooking times as well as cleaning and care recommendations to get you started and enjoying the benefits of this heavyweight, stainless-steel beauty. And if you needed any more encouragement to get cooking, you can also download a Fresh Food Fast recipe booklet from which includes at least 20 delicious ideas, including tips on how to use your new pressure cooker to produce jams and chutneys, Christmas pudding and Curried Chicken Casserole in a fraction of the normal time. The cookware is guaranteed for 10 years against faults, but excludes normal wear and tear. Replacement parts are available separately. This is not your grandmother's pressure cooker. • All pros, no cons
We used one of these every single day, mostly for steaming fresh vegetables, for about 20 years. It was totally reliable and, when it finally gave up the ghost, that was due to human error. We immediately bought a replacement. One thing I can say in recommending a Kuhn Rikon is that it's 98% identical to the one we bought decades ago, and the one slight change we noticed is an improvement: a formerly plastic component is now metal. Replacement gaskets and other parts are readily available and will keep it working "like new." ... show more

  • Solid and functional
I've had a the 2L model for four years, and never had to replace any parts. I left that one at my second home so I will never be without one, and just purchased this 2.5L here. What seems like a loose screw on top is a simple, responsive and sturdy pressure release valve. The plastic handles would only melt if one were using a flame that extends beyond the sides of the pan. By heating it up at medium heat and reducing it to extra low once full pressure is reached, the flame will be nowhere near the sides of the pan, especially on this wider 2.5L model. This takes only a couple of minutes so I see no need for a roaring flame. Dual handles allow you to move the pan while hot, or hold it to run cool water from the tap over the edges for immediate pressure release when desired. The base is very thick so there is no burning of contents. The steam inside reduces all sticking and the lid comes off quite clean. I have electric rice cookers but almost always use the Kuhn Rikon instead because it is much faster and the texture of the rice is better. Only 25 minutes for brown rice, 5 minutes for white. ... show more

  • Pressure Cooking Pleasure
We have had a 5.25 qt Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker for 4 years, for daily use that one was a bit big to handle. We were looking for a smaller 2.5 to 4 qt pressure cooker for quick one time portion meals for 3- 4 people. We tried other brands, both for money savings and variety, and after being disappointed with the construction and quality returned them promptly. We decided to plunge again into Kuhn Rikon, ordered this 2.5 qt Pressure Cooker. Wife is happy - appropriate for small, quick meals, is easy to handle, clean, and store. It feels and looks solidly constructed which makes it slightly on the heavier side for it's size. If you are already familiar with pressure cooking then Kuhn Rikon is the best in class, and if you are already aware of Kuhn Rikon, there is nothing more to add. If the size is right for you, it will serve many, many years. ... show more

  • Jury is still out on this.
Even though this is my second Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker, I'm having issues with this one.

  • Safety Issue
The frying pan is great; I bought two, one for me and one for my sister, but I had an issue with the safety valve after two years of using it. I ordered from Amazon the part to replace it. Now, my sister has the same issue. Unfortunately, I was not successful in finding this part. I think the company should make all the parts available for consumers to purchase. ... show more

  • Does a good job!!
I have been cooking using this pressure cooker and so far I like how quick it cooks. I have been using another brand for over 40 yrs. I like the quality of the Kuhn Rikon but was disappointed that a trivet wasn't included and had to buy it separately. The trivet is used for certain veget. I like the idea of the small size and can be used like a fry pan. There is a glass lid available when used as a fry pan. I have recommended this to friends and family. Two years ago I purchased a larger one for our son. ... show more

  • A high-altitude essential in my kitchen -- Would buy again!
I have 2 Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers (2.65 qt purchased in 2008 and 5.25-qt model in 2007). They're great for cooking at sea level, but, now living at an altitude of 7,000-foot, I consider them to be kitchen essentials. If I could have only one size, I'd go with the larger 5.25-qt model and just cook extra food to freeze, since a minimum volume has to be met. Given my KR pressure-cooker love, though, it's nice having both sizes. I've loved both of my KR pressure cookers & have used them regularly. At this high altitude, it takes a whole lot of precious fuel and half of forever for water to get to a low boil. I'd had my larger pressure cooker for a long time before it suddenly dawned on me that -- in addition to cooking things in it -- I could also save a ton of time & fuel when cooking pasta by boiling water in it to transfer into my regular pasta-cooking pot. If I used it only for that purpose, it would have long since paid for itself. I'm surprised that I've not yet had to replace the gasket in either pot. I wash and store my gaskets gently but, even so, didn't expect their longevity and continuing great condition. I haven't had to replace any other parts, either. Upon other reviewers' recommendations, I purchased the KR Energy Saver / Flame Protect and highly recommend it. In addition to using it with my pressure cookers, I use it for (1) more even browning of food on the stove top; and (2) achieving a very low simmer, which is otherwise impossible to do with my stove burners. For whatever it's worth, if the idea of pressure cooking makes you nervous, I used to be really scared of it myself. I'd heard too many horror stories about old cookers blowing up and how the cookers had to be constantly and closely monitored. My Kuhn Rikon pots have never given me a moment's worry, and I feel completely safe in using them. This has freed me up to worry about other stuff. :)) ... show more

  • This is a great heavy duty fryer and pressure cooker. Expensive but worth it.
I love what it can do. Fry and pressure cook. Non stick quilted bottom and a remarkable release valve that will alow you to fry under pressure if you watch marked regulator and over do it. Kentucky Fried Chicken uses pressure frying and this pan brings the process down to size.
