  • Simply Amazing
Hilda is an ‘Instagram friend’, and the OG of carving clay. So much of my work is inspired by her. This book is simply amazing - beautiful photographs, and thorough explanations that cover so many different techniques and styles. It’s an absolute treasure in my ceramics library.

  • Three pages of actual carving technique
There are three pages of actual carving technique. There are better sources of information about this topic on youtube for free. Don't waste your money on this book.

  • Lots of pictures but carving not as much as expected & spends time on wheel work, too
This book has lots and lots of pictures. It is is easy to read and what they show is often very clear. The book first goes over types of clay and then shows you the tools you use for carving or sgraffito. After that it shows you how to build the basic forms (mainly on the wheel) and then how to carve different designs. Some of the carving sections are very slow and methodically detailed. (Which I love!) And then there are pages which just show the end product as examples of what you could do. I found this a tad disappointing as there were a couple of texturing and carving photos/tiles where I wasn't exactly sure how they were made. In those cases I wish they had shown actual instruction. Also it seems that the patterns need more precision and using a ruler or making guide would help making them more evenly placed. Another thing is that this book has many photos dedicated to wheel work and not carving. It does not really go over how to how to hand build basic shapes so people without a wheel or with less experience making shapes maybe limited to tiles or slumped shapes like bowls. Yes, this is about carving but it is should be titled Sgraffito and Wheel Work instead. It is a solid book with beautiful pictures and the price is good for what you get but the actual carving instructions do not fill up most of the book and some buyers might be disappointed with the 'lean' carving content. Therefore, going through this book is very fast if you are only interested in ideas for carving. However, what the author does go over in sgraffito is done very well. ... show more
