I tried a number of silicone sleeves to protect myself from the heat of the pan's handle, but I could not find any heat-resistant silicone sleeves that would fit the handle.

I wanted a 12 inch cast iron pan to use when my old 10 inch pan isn’t large enough. I had ground down my old 10 inch pan to make it smooth and while I felt it was worth it, it took a full afternoon, a lot of grinder work, and I didn’t look forward to doing it again to a 12 inch pan. Enter the iLiving Polished Cast Iron Skillet. Amazon had a 30% discount going, so I grabbed it! In appearance, this looks beautiful, functional, and high end. The weight is surprising; At 8.8 lbs, it’s almost twice the weight of the cheap pans. The high sides account for a lot of the weight but it’s just a beefy pan overall. The handle is VERY nicely shaped; I can get a nice grip and control the pan easily. I’m a large man, so I have zero issue with the weight. Smaller people may struggle. The ground, mirror finish is amazing and I literally couldn’t have matched it. As others said, it’s not really well seasoned when it arrives. Three times in the oven with Grapeseed Oil and this is almost as non-stick as my ceramic pan. Overall, this is an excellent pan and compares favorably to the $200-$300 brands. So I took the recommendation of others that I should season it further before use. Two things, if you are to heat your skillet to about 200° and apply oil, It’s very difficult to determine the temperature of the skillet. This also applies if you’re going through two or three seasoning events and must let the skillet cool down between applications of oil. You have to guess the temperature. Why I say that? If you were to use a laser thermometer, it may not read correctly. Mine did not. The surface of the skillet is very smooth and reflective. Heating up the skillet at the first time is not a problem, put it in the oven, turn it on to 200°, when it preheats let the skillet sit there for a while. Between seasonings you just have to guess the temperature. The second thing is your initial seasonings will discolor the inner surface. Not a big deal. The more you season it the discoloring tends to fade. Neither of these two issues is a negative. It’s a very nice skillet. You just must be aware of some of the issues. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Oh, one more thing. If you’re looking for a lid. Just get a lodge 12 inch glass or iron lid. If you try to buy one online, you will have issues of fit. ... show more

I have always wanted a cast iron skillet so I was happy to come across this. With this being my first, I really have nothing to compare it to, other than my granny's cast iron that she had for decades. This skillet is very big and way more heavier than it looks. It says that it is pre seasoned, but that is not the case. And me knowing nothing about them, I have had to Google different methods of seasoning and cleaning, as I do not want it to rust. Anyway, other than the seasoning part, this seems to be a very nice, high quality skillet. You can use this on the stove top or in the oven. It distributes heat evenly, allowing for more efficient cooking. It has a handle and pour spouts on each side. After using a few times and cleaning, it has become a bit discolored and I'm really not sure why. I'm also in the process of seasoning it, which I'm still learning about. I have cooked with cast iron most of my life. I got this pan because the $20 skillet I had broke, (after five years of heavy use I dropped in on a rock while camping). I figured it was time to get a good one anyway. Well this one didn't hold up well. This is after a thorough cleaning and five sessions of seasoning, (1 hour at 450 degrees each time) the finish came off easily, and it didn't heat evenly. Very disappointing, especially for the money. IMO stick with the less expensive traditional cast iron pans. The only reason for the two star rating is because nothing stuck to the skillet. ... show more

I have had cast iron before and it just didn’t work well for me. Cast iron is time consuming and a chore but this has been the best one I have had. I almost use daily and have since it came. After a few uses and washed I had to reseason. It cooks so well and it is beautiful to look at.
