  • Wish I'd switched to aluminum long ago.
Size: 12-Inch Color: Anodized
I've been Dutch oven cooking for about 30 years but only with cast iron Dutch ovens. As a youth group leader and outdoor skills instructor, I cook in a Dutch oven over a campfire about once a week. As we all know, everything tastes better when it's cooked outdoors, but as I get older I'm not thrilled with the weight of cast iron ovens. I also go on a lot multi-day canoe trips and I was interested in reducing the amount of weight I pack into my canoe. So I finally took the plunge and bought an aluminum Dutch oven... I wish I'd done this years ago! It is so nice to use an oven that literally weighs only one third of a similar sized cast iron oven. As for it's ability to retain heat as evenly and as long as cast iron, yes, there is a difference, but not enough of a difference to force me to change how I use the oven. I simply use the aluminum one exactly as I use the cast iron ones and everything in it cooks wonderfully. One added bonus that I didn't expect... Because aluminum is easier to sand, polish, and finish than cast iron the interior of this aluminum Dutch oven is much, much smoother than my cast iron ovens. That means food is less likely to stick and cleaning up is really easy. I should have switched to aluminum Dutch ovens a long time ago. ... show more

  • Awesome for weight-conscious folks
Size: 12-Inch Color: Anodized
I pulled a fully loaded and stocked pop-up camper 3,475 miles around this beautiful country of ours for a two week vacation. The last thing I need is to haul around extra weight in the form of some 20 lb. cast iron cookware, especially with the price of gas as it is. This 12" Aluminum Dutch Oven comes in at a mere 8 lbs. We used it for a variety of meals all of which turned out great and cleaned up wonderfully. I have found that if you want to brown the top of the food, add a few more charcoals than what the recipe may call for. Cooking time is always a bit more with dutch ovens in general because of the pre-heating of the metal that is necessary. Cooking in this aluminum D.O. seemed even throughout with no hot spots. I have yet to have anything stick and cleanup with soap and water is nice. If weight is not an issue for you, go with the cheaper and much lauded Lodge which is made in the U.S.A. I paid 89.66 for this, so I think it is high-priced at $109. If weight is an issue for you, this is an easy to use and lighter alternative. I take off one star only because this dutch oven is made in Taiwan or China (oven says one thing, box said another). The only fault I had with this oven from the start was the handle. It would bind and catch, then scratch the oven on the sides. But I guess some dings and scratches are to be expected when camping. Using brute force, I ended up bending the handle to my liking so it flops better. Also with liquid, you have to be very steady when picking up the oven, or it will slosh and want to tip and dump the contents. It feels like it has a high center of gravity. I did not bother with the GSI carrying case, so I store it in my camper in the box in which it came. ... show more

  • Awesome, except for tipping over when filled with liquids and lifted by the handle
Size: 12-Inch Color: Anodized
It's indeed awesome to cook in and easy to clean. I love this dutch oven, mostly. Sadly I feel like I have to take one star off for the pot's poor balance, though. If you put anything liquid in it (including beans or chili) and lift by the wire handle the pot is unstable and will quickly tip over and spill out. Given the pot is often hot when you want to lift it by the handle this is especially inconvenient. Make sure you have a glove/hotpad in your other hand before you go to pick it up! This is an issue for any food that can flow. As an experiment, I have even cooked on this pot in my oven and even on my stovetop at home and other than the legs getting in the way it works great. The thick, super-conducive sidewalls distribute heat better than everything else in my kitchen. ... show more

  • Light weight an works like a dream
Size: 12-Inch Color: Anodized
I had wanted to use dutch ovens for camping trips but had always been put off by the weight. This one is light weight and very easy to clean. Contrary to some reviews that have said that the heat may not be as evenly distributed as a cast iron dutch oven, I have had no issues. Although I don't bang it about, I have found it quite durable. So far, I have used it for apple cobbler, lasagna and paella and it has worked out really well. Yes, it is pricey compared to a cast iron dutch oven but if you can afford it, it is worth it. ... show more

  • Better than cast iron
Size: 12-Inch Color: Anodized
Don't get me wrong. I look my cast iron when at home cooking but I do not drag it along when camping. Cast iron is heavier and harder to clean. Cast iron can also be harder to cook in because they hold the heat longer you have to pull from heat before it is where you want it and let it finish cooking on it's own. This oven is easy to clean, cook with and much lighter. ... show more

  • lighter than my cast iron and cooks just as good cant say enough good about it
Size: 12-Inch Color: Anodized
I wouldnt take a farm in Texas for this dutch oven, i have used this thing so many times that i cant count. If you think that there is nothing out there that can compare to cast iron then you are very mistaken. This dutch oven doesnt weigh as much as my cast iron and it cooks just as good and is by far muchhhhhh easier to clean and doesnt stick. This oven is a very well made product and will last forever if taken care of. ... show more

  • Nice for travel
Size: 12-Inch Color: Anodized
This Dutch oven is nicely finished, and works great. We used parchment paper under the only sticky dessert cooked in it, so I can't really evaluate the non-stick qualities. Some have complained about the bail handle. It looks like ours works perfectly when folded down one way, and hangs up a bit the other way. I can't see that this could lead to a complaint. When you pick it up for the hundredth time it will still be one third the weight of cast iron. ... show more

  • It cooked like I expected a dutch oven to cook
Size: 12-Inch Color: Anodized
It cooked like I expected a dutch oven to cook. I took this on airplane, so that's why I bought an aluminum dutch oven. It might not have been as perfect as a cast iron one, but I had no desire to lug a cast iron dutch oven through airports and onto and off of numerous planes. It was fairly lightweight and I managed to fit it in my carry-on. ... show more
