  • This thing is tough
Style: With Door Liner Size: Large Color: White Configuration: Single
Buying our 2nd Cat Mate cat door after 8-1/2 years of continuous daily use, serious weather, and direct midday through late afternoon sun. Worked great for our indoor/outdoor cats for years through winters with occasional temps in the teens, and summers with regular temps in the 90's and into the 100's. The original is finally beginning to warp slightly at one edge. Our indoor cats love to use this as a window to the backyard, while our outdoor kitty is still able to let himself in. The locks are secure, the flap moves smoothly and falls back to seal well, and the flap has proven to be rainproof, even during multiple east coast hurricanes. SO thankful they're still making this one! Trusting the quality is up to par with the one I bought years ago and that I won't have to update my review. ... show more

  • Polite, Gentleman Kitties Give Paws Up!
Style: With Door Liner Size: Large Color: White Configuration: Single
Don't expect perfection at this price. It's basically a hole liner with a swinging flap. Heed everyone's warnings and you'll be fine. If the provided "sticky strip" on the template rips in half when removing the bag, just use some masking tape. The door I installed it into is an old, hollow, finished wood grain door. Pencil is no good. I scratched my lines with an awl. 1) Find the middle of the door, and make a mark. 2) Measure 4" up from bottom (adjust for non-average cat size, basically you want belly level for the bottom of the hole) and use a small level to score a line. Unlevel mounting of any pet door might affect the swing of the flap. 3) tape template up, even with line, and centered (fold in half for simple center, because they didn't mark it.) 4) draw or score lines around template, then remove template 5) drill holes big enough for saw blade to enter, anywhere inside the scoring/marking 6) get a jigsaw w/ long enough blade or sawsall, and go to town. Some points: a) I cut in 10 minutes w/o removing door. this required some extra holes for ease. knees get a little dirty, but it's fine. b) i cut to the line, mostly, but straying outside of it a bit. don't worry. the flange is super wide and will cover small mistakes. I didn't even bother with the rounded corners. Just don't get so far outside the lines that you leave no wood for the screws to bite into. c) the finer the teeth on your blade, the less tear-out along the edges. 7) fit outside half into hole, then inside half. hold flap open to reach through and squeeze them together and make sure you won't have to trim plastic, in case your door is thinner. If everything fits tight, time to screw. If not, trim the plastic as directed. 8) use the smallest screws and only push hard until they begin to bite into the wood at first. Then, go slow and gentle. Stop when the plastic frame is pulled close to the door. These doors have paper thin wood, so it won't take but 1/2 turn over-tightening to strip your hole. I didn't bother with the confusing instructions about drilling any of the plastic. These are self-tapping screws that went through fine. Personally, I removed the magnet from the frame side (bottom magnet) with a lot of careful prying and cracked it out w/ cutters, before beginning. The felt makes the door hard enough to swing. I am not really worried about air-flow, though, just so the main door can close, again. I'm sure that with use that felt will smooth out and the door will swing more easily, but the magnets were too powerful for a gentle-natured cat. I played around with half of the magnet and even a tiny sliver of it, and it was still too much. I was going to glue a smaller piece back in, if it worked. Speaking of that, this kitty is large-ish, but super timid and polite. I swear, he "mews" a little "anyone home? can i come in?" before entering any room. Fortunately, he likes to follow us in/outside. So, closing the main door behind us, then calling to him through the clear flap, and holding the flap open for him, and "pawing" the flap back and forth w/ our fingers for a couple of days is about all it took. He now gets that this is his special lil door, and I've caught him just playing with it a bit, making it swing. Awesome product at an awesome price! Thank you, Cat Mate! ... show more

  • Good product
Style: With Door Liner Size: Large Color: White Configuration: Single
I bought this to replace an old one. The old one had no issues, alittle noisy but not bad...the new one will lock on it's own sometimes and lock my cats in the basement...I just gotta check it everyday, happened 3 times so far. Don't know how it happens, cats must bump the switch somehow.

  • Good door, but I over-bought....
Style: With Door Liner Size: Large Color: White Configuration: Single
So, I wanted a simple cat door for an interior door so that my dog would stop eating the cat food. I didn't care about insulation, locking mechanisms, magnets - turns out, I just wanted a door that swung freely from both sides. I'm sure such a door exists, but I bought this one not knowing exactly what I wanted, and I was determined to make it work. Anyway, the good - it was very easy to install, looks great, and operates just as it's supposed to. I popped the door off, drew my outline, cut the door, screwed in the cat door, popped the door back on, all in under an hour - and wala, instant cat door. The only problem - all 3 of our cats didn't get it. We went through some "training" and they could kinda use it with some prodding, and if left in the room, they'd eventually figure their way out, reluctantly. But since both their food and cat litter were in the room, I didn't want to run the risk of stressing the cats out too much. The main problem seemed to be that it "sticks" - mainly because of the built-in magnet, and also the felt strip around the door. So, after a couple days of skiddish cats, I went to work to remove the magnet. This was a bit challenging at first, but the easiest way seemed to be to remove the entire plastic border around the one side of the door with a pair of needle-nosed pliers and a screwdriver. Once that's removed, you can pry out the magnet and remove the felt strip. Now the door swings free and easy, and the cats are much happier (or at least I suppose they are). Granted, I may have been too impatient and they might have learned to use the magnetized door with time, but it really seems to me that there should be an option to painlessly remove the impediments on the door in order to optionally have a free-swinging door, or sell a cheaper version without all the gizmos. Just a suggestion to the manufacturer. ... show more
