  • I don't have a ball joint in need of repair
I'll admit it, I saw many possible uses for this tool and while I haven't had one just yet my many years of experience tell me that it's as solid as they come, but like all things it has it's limits. Given enough leverage you could either break or bend a tong, strip the threads or round over the nut face. Or more likely the tongs might slip off whatever they are prying against. But I feel like anyone who gets this far should have a good grasp of the implications and approximately how much force constitutes the beginnings of a bad idea. The point where you really can't be mad when something fails. You knew you were pushing your luck, but it was either you or this _______(fill in the blank). You are the last resort, there is no one to run and cry to. If you don't do it, it ain't getting done. OK, so now we know who this is addressed to, I will go into more detail. The spine of this structure is stout, that will not be the failure point. the RAM is well centered between the prongs and offers a choice of either the nut-like cap which can spin freely, though it will be the stationary portion while the bolt threads spin freely, or you can remove that cap and there is a ball bearing point on the tip to catch and center itself on a pivot divot. What this looked like to me is the claw of a hammer, only wider and straight and one which is able to apply force in a linear manner rather than in a curved direction which too often causes the points to slip as they move in two directions simultaneously. The one improvement I'd like to see/make is to have an arm extending from the bolt to move the pressure point out from directly in-line with the tongs. This design favors the strength of the tool and any arm would tend to make the motion of the force angular , but the action becomes more like prying than pulling. I haven't quite worked it out in my head, I will need a specific use case. There have been these low to no profile jacks available recently, they are essentially a clamp used like a spreader, with flat clamping faces that nestle and take up no more space than the thickness of the metal. Several times I have reached for these to perform a pulling task that they were never meant to do. They are simply meant to start a lifting project where the object is on the ground with no way to get hands or fingers underneath. If you feel as I do, that this is clearly a useful piece of steel, well then I like your thinking, it is. ... show more

  • It's nice but a bit smaller than what I expected.
Seems like a well made press but it's best used on smaller cars as it's just not large enough for heavy duty suspensions. I removed a ball joint from an old Toyota Paseo and it worked fine. After that i attempted to use it on a first gen Honda Pilot but backed off after the amount of struggling it was experiencing caused me concern. The Honda ball joint later came off with the good old five pound hammer method but it took a few pops. Still, for what it is, this is a decent tool if you have reasonable expectations for a small sized ball joint press. ... show more

  • Seems like nice idea but poor design, may not fit in some places
This kind of seemed like a nice idea assuming you can get this in where you need it. Concept is there but the actual item seems out of spec. The center bolt is not in good spot related to depth of the slot for the ball joint, also the screw is offset to a side so does not want to stay on the bolt to press it though. Saw this and decided not worth rising damaging my equipment or getting hurt if this slips off. ... show more

  • Heavier than I was expecting.
This separator should work great. It's far more solid than I was expecting (squeezed it in my vice) and with other inexpensive tools I've bought over the years. I've struggled with removing ball joints in the past so I'm looking forward to putting this to use because I have a CV joint that is acting up and I think this should work better than the pickle fork. ... show more

  • Seems sturdy
First impression is that this should work very well for replacing the components in my truck. Great taper on the pickle fork and the bolt is not only heavy, but threaded through the thickest part of the unit. I don't anticipate there being any problems getting the ball joints out with this.

  • Right tool for the right job
This is very well made and it has some weight to it. It is small enough to get into tight spots. It really worked well. It's easy enough to use. This makes removal quick that way you're not out there all day working on one thing.
