    • Stylish casters. Move like wheeled casters
Up until now I had been using premium wheeled casters. They are also polyurethane and have extremely low friction bearings, so these ball casters have a similar material construction. To clarify, these are not a captured ball that rolls freely inside the housing. They are more like a giant rounded wheel as there are fixed bearing points on the sides of the ball. You can see this if you examine the product photos but it might not be obvious if you aren't looking. It's not really a positive or negative but it does mean these are more similar to traditional casters than they might appear at first glance. For example, this means that in order to roll in a direction the whole caster body turns to align with the direction of movement just like normal wheeled casters. Installation was super easy. Pull the old casters off, push these on. I did it several times back and forth so I could compare. I somehow expected these casters to be a very different experience but they move almost identically to my other casters. I'm using these on wood flooring so rolling resistance is very low and they easily move in any direction. Since they are fixed orientation inside of the housing, there is a small amount of resistance when abruptly changing directions as the caster body has to rotate. I use this to my advantage to keep the chair in place. These roll so easily that the chair will roll away on my slightly sloped floor if the casters are aligned with the slope. Where I feel these would be best long term is on carpet. Typical casters have two parallel wheels with potential fiber trapping areas up inside between those wheels. These balls still have bearing points but they are on the outside and there isn't a large void up inside to collect junk. The casters themselves are quite stylish. I chose the blue but having different colors allows you to coordinate if your chair has color. They are slightly taller, maybe 1/4", than my old casters. But I also noticed a small difference when changing regular casters previously. This doesn't typically matter but it might for some specific uses. The manufacturer specs 74mm but I measured 71mm to the top of the bulge where the chair bottoms out on the stem. All of my review is based on comparison with other premium casters. If you still have the casters that came with your chair then these will probably be a huge upgrade. The cheaper the chair the worse the casters, in my experience. The worst casters are just hard plastic which tends to drag, scrape, and make noise. These have a small amount of squeak like a new shoe but after a few days of usage they become almost silent. ... show more
