  • Nice knife set - Imported, but gets the job done
Style: 8-Piece Knife Block Set
Knives historically have a lot of snob appeal, especially when they come from traditional hand-built sources. I get the attraction, and I have some decent mid-grade knives from Icel, Wusthof, Buck, etc. But frankly, I was just looking for a set that was already sharp, had a decent bread knife, a santoku, and a block to hold the whole shebang. So far these knives seem to be holding up pretty well. They advertise special cryogenic build properties...yeah, maybe so. I dunno. I do know they are quite sharp right out of the package, so sharp that you will want to exercise extreme caution when using them. They will cut you right now. There is no such thing as a "lucky slip" with these knives. The bread knife was a particular joy. My wife has been making do with a worn out old serrated knife from the 1990's for way too long! This one is just a lot nicer. It cuts the bread beautifully and with absolute minimum of crumbs. It is particularly good for hard-crusted breads, which it cuts through like butter. The other knives are practically sized and cover the range that a typical DIY chef is going to need. They are of course Sino-imported, but the build quality is pretty good. I have no idea how long the edge will last. It is a 26º edge, so keep that in mind when sharpening. I keep whetstones in my kitchen as well as a strop, but so far they are holding up to moderate home use pretty well. We shall see. For the price, they are a decent set - good enough to give to a young couple or young adult with her first apartment who needs something practical that doesn't break the bank. They look good, as does the block. The handle styling is vaguely reminscent of Wusthof, with black riveted resin handle material that looks good, withstands washing o.k. and seems to offer a secure grip when slicing. The scissors cut well, disassemble for easy cleaning, and fit the hand. They very much resemble Wusthof's included scissors in their typical mid-price block knife set (The Wusthof's scissors were also imported from the same far East country as this entire kit - Wusthof knives still being made in Germany) These are from China. The block appears to be bamboo, but is well made. It is logically laid out, well balanced and not prone to tipping, and doesn't take up a huge amount of counter space - a significant plus in a smaller kitchen. All in all, I'm giving these imported knives a five star rating. Within the limits of what they are, they get the job done with little fuss. The bread knife is a nice bonus, as is the Santuko, which works just as one would expect. Sharpness is very good, and the 26º blade angle is within average skills for resharpening. Or, take your knives to a professional and have her sharpen them. Overall, five stars and no cons. ... show more

  • OH! THE FEEL!!! ...& They Are Beautiful!
Style: 8-Piece Knife Block Set
Beauty + Excellent Performance = Perfection! I am self admittedly kind of a knife snob….but not like that! I just like nice knives and I have a few “special” knives that I have added to the kitchen over the years that are my “go to” knives. I am at the age where I refuse to tolerate mediocrity in a kitchen knife and my tools. I have been on the planet long enough to have been had over and over again by name brand “knife block sets” that turn out to be just “good enough” to not return and then turn into irritating garbage that never takes an edge right and on the rare occasion they do, the edge doesn’t last. So that being said I was hesitant to order this but I have been super happy with everything I have owned and used by TFal for over 40 years going all the way back to my Grandmother's TFal cookware. So I decided to give it a shot. BOY, OH BOY Am I Glad I Did! Honestly, the VINE Program aside, person to person if I had to pay full price to keep this item 5 seconds after I submit this review I would gladly do so! These are SO Good that I can easily and truthfully say that these are the Nicest Knives I have Ever Had in a kitchen block set. These compare more closely to individually bought knives that you would buy, and spend big on, because it’s a nice knife that you LIKE and that you WANT to have in your kitchen. First I want to stress how well balanced these are. They are blade balanced in just the right way with weight forward on the blade. That balance was the first thing I noticed when unpacking these and that thought kept coming back to the front of my mind as I handled these. They just feel….right. It’s hard to explain but the larger knives here are by far the most comfortable and fun to use knives I own now. My old special knives haven’t been touched since I got this set. I absolutely love them. The handles are contoured in such a way that they feel natural to hold no matter if I am handle-holding to cut or pinch gripping the top-back of the blade. They are comfortable no matter how I hold them, even reversed like when I cut the tips off of green beans or the gross ends off of celery stalks. Did i mention how comfortable the handles are? Sharpness/Edge Retention: These came SUPER SHARP out of the box and none of them needed to be touched up. (Again, knife snobbery coming through.) So I washed them and got to using them, including doing to them what I would never do to my “special knives” and cutting on glass, hitting bones, getting roughed up in the stainless steel sink etc. I wanted to see how long before I could tell a difference in the edge. I did some really inappropriate things to these because I’m a contrarian and wanted to put the “ice hardening technology” to the test and thought I would catch them in a gimmicky lie. Welp….I have to admit defeat! They are telling the truth. These stay sharp MUCH longer than any of my high quality knives with specialty steels do. I seen it with my own eyes and I still can’t believe it. They are still scary sharp and working off the factory edge that came on them and they shown absolutely zero signs of needing to be sharpened or even touched up! That alone sold me but couple that with the balance and the super comfortable grips and I am 100% there for it! On top of all of that the block is really nice looking on my countertops and has an open bottom to allow air flow on the slots. It is rare that I get excited over something and then it keeps me delighted for the long haul but these have done just that. These are great knives and even the shears are awesome! They put together a complete set to cover everything that is needed and no “fluff” just to add extra pieces to make it look “more better” than it is. No extra low quality steak knives or steak knife holes that are always empty in the block. Which I have always found to be annoying. Prep work, veg, meat slicing, bread, paring and utility plus scissor work is all covered with this kit. I see this kit lasting me the rest of my life without me wanting to throw it out everytime I use it like I have in the past with Farberware, Kitchenaid, etc. sets. In fact since getting this set I have gathered up some of this stuff and have taken it out back to the scrap pile FINALLY where it belongs! I have wanted to do that for So LONG and this set finally gave me the comfort to move ahead and part with the lower quality stuff that I have hanging around the kitchen. These are awesome and I wholeheartedly and genuinely love them and fully recommend them! This is a REALLY Nice Block Set that feels like it should be more expensive than what it is. I feel this is a great value for money at only $87.17 at the time of this review. I have spent that kind of money on just one, 8 inch Chef’s knife! Of which I no longer use because I use the Chef’s Knife in this set instead because I prefer it to my old “good one.” This one's a winner and I am glad to see that TFal still means something when it comes to functional quality in the kitchen. A+++ item! No regrets on the order whatsoever and these are so good that I’ll be back for more to give as gifts through the year and at holidays. This is a gift I KNOW people will be happy with and I do not have to be embarrassed about giving….plus it looks and performs higher than the price point alludes to. I’m hard to please with this kind of stuff so if I am over the moon about them then I would bet heavily that most everyone else would be happy with them also. This is a nice knife block set….period. ... show more
