Description

The Steelcase Series 1 chair has a LiveBack flexor system in the backrest which conforms to your body and moves with you to support the spine as you change postures. The tilt mechanism is synchronized; the seat and back work in harmony with each other, keeping the body securely supported in the chair and feet firmly planted on the floor so you can recline without leaving your optimal zone for seeing and reaching your work. This model includes an adjustable seat depth, fully adjustable arms (raise up and down, pivot in and out, shift forward and back and side to side), adjustable lumbar, pneumatic seat height adjustment, recline tension adjustment (weight activated with adjustment and lock), flexing back with mesh upholstery, upholstered seat and wheels for carpet flooring. The seat features strong yet pliable foam which conforms to the body and creates pressure-free comfort. Flexible seat edge offers a bit of bend, right where you need it – relieving pressure points under your thighs. This chair will arrive unassembled and require some assembly; covered by Steelcase warranty.

    • Probably the easiest desk chair that I've ever assembled.

There is beauty in the simplicity of this chair. Sure, you don't have a million dials and switches on the base for fine tuning, but it hits all the basics and while I initially was taken back by the fact that it only has 3 settings for the backrest support (rigid, firm and soft), I have found that's all that I really need. I should note that mine arrived with more of the assembly done than the Steelcase videos even indicated. For instance, the armrests were already installed and I didn't have to attach the back to the base. Made me wonder if mine was a return, demo or something like that but it appears to be in like new condition. Anyway, I had it all together and adjusted to my liking in all of 5 min. which is great! I feel like this chair corrects a lot of my bad habits w/out being a nag about it. I find myself sitting with improved posture and with proper support at the three key touch points- Arms, back, butt. I would say that if there is a weak link among those three, it'd maybe be at the arms as they sort of vaguely move around laterally sometimes and I find myself sort of resetting them every so often to where I think they should be for me. They also are fairly thin and lightweight so I have some concern about durability but only time will tell there. Steelcase claims the chair can support up to 400lbs, which to me, indicates that it should hold up under the kind heavy daily use that I bought it for as an intensive home office user. Some complaints in reviews I read ahead of purchase were related to the seat cushion being too hard. I would tend to disagree there as I think it strikes a perfect balance of comfort/supportiveness. As with a bed mattress, softer isn't always better in my experience. As for the rest, it feels like an upscale economy chair rather than anything more luxurious with lots of plastic but it's all well-done. I guess for the price paid, that's fair and my wife indicated that she prefers this to any other desk chair that I've brought home thus far. I'd say that's high praise. I think that unless you are willing to go closer to a grand or more, this is a great option- Particularly if you are under 6' tall. If you are larger, you will likely want to add the optional headrest for additional support as the chair back covers me at 5'10" just barely. Otherwise, maybe steer clear of this one, but for the average size adult, it really shines. ... show more

This is a great chair, and it should be: it's an expensive chair. I'm still wondering why the hard floor casters added so much to the cost over the model with the carpet casters. The only downside of the chair that I've noticed is the swiveling/sliding armrests. I'm not sure of the ergonomic value of such a feature, but it's a bit annoying. I would, however, recommend this chair to anyone spending many hours at a desk. ... show more

    • The Engineers Who Designed This Chair Deserve an Award for Ingenuity and Comfort!

For the past two (2) years, I've been looking for a good office chair. Most of my efforts have been on Amazon, looking for chairs with a 4.0+ rating. This includes reading hundreds of reviews, as it is easy to be seduced by high ratings only to discover a sizable amount of legitimate gripes about any given chair. The search ended on Oct. 10th when I stumbled across the Steelcase Series 1 Work Office Chair. The engineers deserve an award for ingenuity. The design forces you to have proper posture when sitting: gluteus maximus and back! Very comfortable. My only issue: The padded arm rests swivels to the left and right. There's no locking system to keep them in place. That said, this is the best office chair I have ever owned. I paid $418.20 for the chair. Oh, and I paid $40 for five (5) single-wheel rubber casters by Lifelong. A worthy upgrade to any traditional casters. ... show more

The Steelcase Series 1 was very easy to assemble...no tools required. It may have taken longer to get everything out of the box than to actually put the chair together. Simple instructions and clever design eliminated the need to tools/parts. I had purchased a competitive product and spent 20 minutes bolting it together only to realize the chair wasn't going to meet my needs. I like the overall quality of the chair. It feels stable, recline is smooth, and casters (hard surface) grip as expected. Minor concerns include the seat cushion is a little firm and the seat back could be taller. It's really incredible how the second you turn 30, your body immediately starts to fall apart. Gone are the days of stuffing my feet into any-old shoes, using whatever pillow was around, and sitting in what BS computer chair my dirt-poor ass could afford. My body pays dividends for living while cheap, and now I have to shell out some money for the things I use every day. But I'm still poor, so y'know, like, within reason... Which led me to this chair. Is is pretty? No. Is it the best out there? Also no, because the best one is literally $1300. This guy looks like the corporate-flavored death of childhood dreams, but I weighed the reviews against the cost on several other chairs, and I settled on this one. I wasn't thrilled with it once I built and sat in it. I just ate $400, I wanted to be impressed or something, but I wasn't. It was just a chair. (And the armrest articulations are pretty baffling tbh, but admittedly fun to idly screw around with.) I immediately stopped registering it's presence under me entirely after a few minutes. BUT THAT'S THE THING. I didn't think about the chair! Because I didn't have to! It wasn't hurting me. No bolts digging into my butt, no growing back pain, no fighting with nitpicky settings. I can sit in this thing for hours and hours and never once think about it. It's GREAT. I don't need a chair to bleep my bleep, I just need it to be a chair and not ruin my body.
