Description

The 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 5" Random Orbit Sander (model XOB01Z, tool only) delivers increased efficiency and mobility to woodworkers. The XOB01Z features three speed settings, superior ergonomics and up to 40 minutes of run time on a single charge (battery sold separately). Match the speed to the application with three speed settings (7, 000/9, 500/11, 000 OPM), which are easily changed with a one-touch electronic control switch. The large 1/8" random orbit action is engineered for efficient sanding, fast material removal, and a swirl-free finish. The pad brake reduces free-spin for improved overall finish, and a control system regulates pad speed at start-up. The XOB01Z uses quick-change 5" (8-hole) hook-and-loop abrasive paper for increased versatility.

  • absolutely great sander
if you are a professional woodworker and you worked with the best sanding machines in the world like Mirka and Festool you know what is great 2.5 stroke sanding finish then this Makita is pretty much very close with the result. this is 5 inch sanding pad sander not 6. Particulary this Makita is very simple and excelent sander with perfect balance and slow motion vibration There are just 3 speed option but all of them work really good. vacuum exit hose could be better designed for vacuum extractors. that is the only problem highly sugest this sander ... show more

  • So worth it
Honestly I love this thing. I don't need a sander very often. But man this thing did so well. Battery lasted for a lot longer then I expected. The best part is this is the first sander I have ever used that the dust actually went in the catch. Amazing lol

  • Strong little tool.
I used this to sand around twenty 10' redwood 2x6s that had been out in the weather for a several years and had been covered with honeydew from an aphid infestation in my oak trees plus the dust and dirt that got caked on. It took a lot of sanding from 36 grit down to 80 grit to get these boards back to usable shape for a deck I was building. Many hours of sanding and the wood looks great and stained up nicely. Not having to deal with a cord was very convenient as I was working out in the yard away from the house. I have two 5.0 amp-hour batteries that I was able to swap as needed. The battery being used easily provided plenty of run time to allow the other battery to fully charge. I have used the sander on many other woodworking projects and it has always performed well. ... show more

  • Cordless!! Great tool
Uses 8 hole hook and loop 5” disks. I find them to be the most common type available at local hardware stores. The sander is powerful and has a large orbital oscillation pattern of ⅛” (3mm). Having 3 speeds is nice but it can feel like it’s slow even on the fastest setting. It’s moving a little slower than most corded sanders but the sandpaper will still cut fast with the large orbital pattern. In fact, I use higher grit in this sander than I do in faster corded sanders. The hook and loop pad is very flat on mine. The very flat pad and the slower orbital oscilation can make higher grit sanding pads grab your base material more and the sander can feel a little difficult to control if using much pressure. I’ve found using light pressure gives me the most control and even using two hands with light pressure works really well for control. Even with the slightly different technique from my corded sander I find this Makita to be very useful and surprisingly good. It runs very quiet for a sander and even though it sounds slow, it is efficient and cuts fast. I use it with a cordless vac and the dust collection is great. I usually remove the dust bag from the dust port adapter and my vac hose fits in the bag’s place. I temporarily tape the hose in place. I do think I will buy Makita’s hose adapter for their sanders to use with this one. The dust bag does a good job but as with any sander indoors, it will get dust everywhere without a vacuum dust collector. I hope this review is helpful. ... show more

  • Works well but not without issues
This Makita performs about as well as my corded Ridgid random orbit sander, but the freedom of cordless makes it a win for on-site work like fine tuning a scribe piece. I have medium-sized hands, so the size of the grip and positioning of the buttons is less than ideal for me, but better than the Ridgid which was impossible to turn on/off without using a 2nd hand. If you have large hands you'll probably be fine. The Ridgid has a wider and continuous range of speed adjustment, which is great. This Makita only has discrete low/medium/high settings, which so far has been adequate for my uses. On high with 80 grit it takes off a lot of material fast, even on hard maple. I am using it with 5.0ah batteries, which makes it kinda heavy. It's ok when using on a flat benchtop, but sanding any vertical surface gets tiring fast. This is an issue with all cordless tools however. That said, for large sanding projects in the shop, I'm going to stick with corded. Battery performance was adequate not great, but my batteries are old so don't read too much into that. Dust collection without an attached vacuum is just ok (better than my Ridgid, but that is not saying much the Ridgid is terrible). With a vacuum, dust collection is pretty good. HOWEVER the dust port is 7/8" O.D. which did not fit any adapters I had for my 1.25" hose so I had to make one custom and use tape which is a HASSLE. I will look for a legit plastic adapter the next time I go to Woodcraft or Rockler. Makita, if you see this, ship it with an adapter for common U.S. market hose sizes! Operating noise levels are very good, no high frequencies. Overall I'm happy with the purchase, but keep in mind I only own Makita cordless, so it's not like I had a choice when choosing this tool. ... show more

  • Excellent little sander
Small and easy to handle. Enough power to get the job done

  • Comfortable to hold, powerful, uses Makita batteries…great option for Makita users
I have been using a corded orbital sander for over 20 years. However, I needed to sand a pergola outside and wanted to untether myself for this project. I am a long time Makita user, which means I have a lot of Makita batteries, so this was a no-brainer. The sander worked like a champ. Good power, good runtime, smooth finish. Also, even though there’s only one way to hold the sander, my hand didn’t hurt after long usage. So, good ergonomics. I’m not at all surprised…most of my Makita tools perform very well. If you are a Makita user and want to go cordless with your orbital sander, I can easily recommend this one. ... show more
