The serrated knives were ditched and replaced with some Japanese Damascus steel steak knives. I just don't have a need for serrated knives other than the bread knife. Now all the rest of the set are some of best feeling knives I have had the opportunity to get in my hands. The weight and balance of the knife fell so good in my hand. I can see that the knives are machined steel and not the hand forged steel that many others claim. None the less, I can feel the quality each time I pick on up. The are sharp and make cutting even the thinnest of things easy. Its is easy to get carried away and cut more than what is need because they just feel so good in my hands. in the description it shows a hand holding the knife balancing on one finger, that is real and catch myself trying that balancing often. We had this 30 year old knife set at our home and I been looking to get a new set. While browsing Amazon one afternoon for kitchen accessories I came across this 15 piece set that had a built in sharpener and decided to order it. Once the set arrived you could immediately tell how well they were made and how sharp they were. The knives were heat treated, NSF certified with carbon stainless steel blades wrapped in a abs black composite handles. The set includes a pair of scissors, 6 steak knifes, 2 sharpeners, plus a bunch of chopping knifes. Our family was really blown away at the quality and how nice this set really is. Wow, this knife set is fantastic!!! The knives themselves are very very sharp out of the box and have an amazing weight and heft to them that helps them just glide through anything. So far they work better than any knife set I've owned, which has included name brand sets 3X + the cost. The block is just as nice as it's solid wood with a handsome finish and built-in sharpener.     • Good looking, solid construction, basic low-end steel, decent value - poorly packaged
The knives themselves are solid basic 4116 stainless steel, nicely forged (a little thinner than typical) and with fairly well finished handles and edges. They don't come dull, but definitely NOT shaving sharp out of the box, and 4116 isn't going to be an amazing edge regardless. The scissors are nicer than average - separating easily for cleaning and with comfortable grips. Rivets on the knives are solid, slightly proud of the handles in most cases but not obnoxiously so. First looks are great - the forged look is so much nicer than slab-handles, and it holds up on closer inspection - until the steel and its edge finish remind you these are "inexpensive" blades. The knife block is nicely finished, but it only angles the handles slightly - and accessing the built-in sharpener could be awkward depending on where you place the block. My biggest complaint is that the knives ship tossed into a separate box with thin cardboard sleeves, plastic tip guards, and plastic wrappers but nothing keeping them immobilized. My set arrived with knives all skew, holes in the inner box, tip protectors broken, etc. Nothing really obviously wrong with the knives, but when your biggest value is in the looks of your product, it seems silly to compromise that. Overall these are nice *LOOKING* knives, and given the selling price of around $70 vs about that for single good German knife, it's hard to go too far wrong with them, but definitely should only be purchased when the price is right. ... show more

These knives are great; well balanced, very sharp, and diverse types for all kinds of culinary use. The built-in sharpener is fantastic to keep them at peak sharpness. Overall, this is a good quality set. They state that these are sharpened at 14 degrees. From what I can tell, that may be true, but the blades are thick so not sure if that 14 degrees will hold up well. Typically, kitchen knives are sharpened around 20 degrees with Asian knives at 15 or 16 degrees. But, when I do sharpen these, I'll go with 15 degrees an hope that keeps a good edge. The knives feel good in the hand and seem well balanced. The most surprising two things are the scissors and the bread knife. The scissors are about the most comfortable, easy cutting kitchen shears I've used. The bread knife is fantastic. It is thick, sharp and cuts bread better than my thinner / longer bread knives. ... show more

    • On the fence...
These aren't horrible knives, but they don't stand out as spectacular either. They are "German Designed" not German made. Don't get confused here, these are made in China. They ARE full tang, which is definitely better than some knives I've had over the years, but they aren't amazing knives either. The included knife block is of the old sort, a wood block with slots for the various knives to go. I have found over time that I HATE this block design. One, there's no good way to keep it clean over the long-term. They are small slots, which means when dust inevitably settles in there, you're stuck with it. I have recently found a knife block that uses a removable bristle system for the inner area, which you can remove and wash, and then the outside is magnetic. AMAZING! Even a regular magnetic knife strip would be preferable to this type of block though. The built in sharpeners, in my opinion, should be retired altogether - they rarely do a good job. These are definitely NOT the worst knives I have had over the years. I just wasn't wowed, and I guess at the price point, I shouldn't expect to be wowed.
