  • YOU NEED THIS BREAD CUTTER!!!
Size: 11.75-Inch by 8-Inch Color: Black
Just amazing! I bake thick crust, whole wheat, sourdough bread and slicing it with a knife is almost enough to make me stop baking every time I turn out a few loaves. We searched for a slicing alternative and kept seeing this unit. Seemed a bit pricey! We watched an independent demo video and the baker insisted that WE NEED THIS BREAD CUTTER! We rolled the dice! Our first four loaves sliced easily, quickly and perfectly. We learned to let the bread sit for quite awhile are baking before slicing... it makes a big difference. In fact we now slice it 12 hours or so after baking. It's an amazing unit that is a marvel of precision design and engineering. WELL WORTH THE MONEY! It did try to slide around the table top a bit. We added a touch of water to the rubber grips and that did the trick. And don't let that stop you... I came up with any number of easy ways to stop the slide... DEFINITELY not a deal breaker. It's very easy to overcome that challenge. We couldn't be happier with this unit. It's one of our best buys ever on amazon. Superb in every way! Wish I could rate it a 10! ... show more

  • Worth it for the safety of cutting your bread loaves.
I have been using this manual bread slicer for more than a month now. It arrived quickly, and was ready to use out of the box. I am 69 years old and severely cut my thumb slicing my homemade sourdough bread with my bread knife. I bought the top recommended electric knife, which was useless since it could not even get through the crust. That is why I decided to try this product for both my wife and I to cut our loaves. We are both so pleased with its function and safety. A few simple accessories addressed the concerns of other reviewers. A piece of foam protected the blade from fingers, when not in use (see picture). A breadboard beside the unit gave a larger working surface and placing these on an old silicone baking mat, kept them from sliding around and created a great bread station on our countertop (see picture). And lastly, using tongs to slice the end piece of bread protects fingers (see picture). ... show more

  • Excellent slicer but some safety concerns
My wife likes her bread sliced thin, so commercially sliced bread doesn't "cut it" for her. We buy fresh loaves locally 3-4 at a time (bread freezes well) but it's getting harder to slice multiple loaves at one go with a bread knife (even a premium quality one) as I get older without getting tired hands and arms. The Zassenhaus does a fine job of making thin slices (~1/4") much easier than with a bread knife. I've only used it a few times so far, thus I cannot comment on the durability as reported in other reviews. But the blade guard does not extend all the way around the blade (the nature of how the machine works, I suppose) so it's a bit intimidating, especially when moving the device or when getting down to the opposite heel of the loaf. I adjust the thickness wider as I get to the last 2-3 slices of the remaining heel to keep my fingers further away from the blade. And I adjust the blade to zero thickness to align it with the guide and get it more out of harm's way before storage and when moving it. ... show more

  • Even slices top to bottom.
Cuts through bread so easy and quickly. With big sourdough loaves of bread, the slices tend to curve out towards the hand crank.

  • Close, But No Cigar
I bought this bread slicer because I wasn’t pleased with the plastic or wooden type with slots to “guide” a serrated bread knife as it cut the slices. I was always getting inconsistent thickness. This hand crank slicer was the only viable option I could find other than an electric meat slicer type. A serrated blade is a vital necessity for smooth bread slicing but most meat slicers don’t have such a blade. Some of the “faults” others have mentioned with the Zassenhaus are true. The handle gets in the way of the slice being cut especially when the bread is of a softer nature and approaching 5 inches tall as the slice will start to bend and then hit the handle as you rotate the blade. There is also slightly less than 5 inches of clearance from the top of the base to the bottom of the handle shaft so you really can’t cut bread that is over 4 ¾” in height. Additionally, the short shaft of the handle causes the crank portion of the handle to interfere with the slice being cut. As others reported, there is too much slop in the thickness adjustment guide so it tends to cut uneven tapered slices as the guide slips out of parallel with the blade especially at the end of the cut. I wasn’t able to tighten the bottom nut adequately to keep the guide securely fastened and maintain parallelism. The base is too narrow. On the side of the base where you have to hold the bread, there is only 3 ¾” of support under the bread. On a 9“ long loaf you have too much unsupported length until you have cut several slices. Of course, you can compensate by applying more hand pressure to keep the bread aligned but, if the bread is a softer type, you risk distorting the bread and/or the slice. On the positive side, I felt that the suction cups did an excellent job of holding the slicer securely on a smooth counter top. The blade cut softer bread very well but I have not yet tried cutting a crusty loaf. In summary, the slicer has the right idea but poor execution. Put a larger diameter blade on it, increase the size of the base, extend the crankshaft 2”, and secure the cutting guide to maintain proper parallelism and you will have a real winner. I’m still contemplating trying to remedy some of the issues myself or return it. But for the asking price, this slicer is not a good value. ... show more

  • Overpriced but good
Very nice bread slicer. The blade is very sharp and cuts even the softest loaf. I don’t understand why it costs so much ; it’s just basic wood and a metal blade

  • Got to have one!
This slicer is everything I was looking for in a slicer. It’s easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to make just the right thickness for the slices I want. It’s suction cups hold it down on the countertop so there’s no slippage. It’s simple and efficient. Anyone who makes bread, “Got to have one”!
