I'm sure the chef's on next top chef would laugh you out of the room if you unraveled your knife roll and had these in there but for your average citizen this is a good pair set of knives. You get just about every night you need to make any type of lunch breakfast or dinner and the block also has a little area to sharpen the knives if you so choose. I won't be using it since I have my own sharpener but it's there. Also from being honest I think the one steak knife was a ridiculous addition but that's just me. I typically just have super cheap knives - but thought it was time to get a decent set. Most knife sets come with so many extra knives that I don't need, which is what drew me to this set. 7 knives seems like just the right amount - I don't need 6 steak knives, or a fish knife (whatever that is!). This pretty much has most of the knives I need for every day cooking. The knife block itself is beautiful. I feel like most blocks look cheap - but this one has a nice finished look to it. The integrated sharpener is a nice touch. The knives themselves - they aren't cheap and they aren't top of the line - they are pretty much what I would expect for this price point. I think this would be a solid set if you are wanting to get into decent knives. I have a few very nice knives, and you can feel the difference. These knives are lighter, which some may like and some may not. I enjoy them for everyday cutting of fruits and vegetables - and they came razor sharp out of the box. Time will tell how they hold up. I didn't want to review these until they had been used over and over again. These knives are sharp! They hold an edge very well and don't need to be sharpened often at all. The block is nice and heavy. It fits well in the small space I have for it. No complaints!
