  • Not Just for Kids
There are a LOT of good things that can be said about this TOMLOV DM5 5'' LCD 'Kids' Digital Microscope, not the least of which is that it's not just for kids! This is truly a high-quality piece of equipment that is suitable for scores of uses. Yes, it is a wonderful device for kids to learn more about the world we live in (in particular, the micro-world), and to pique their curiosity towards so many scientific fields. I don't think it would be a stretch to say that it could enrich their lives, introducing them to the hidden wonders that can be found in exploring the tiny things in our world. But it is also a tool that adults of all ages will find useful. For example, coin or stamp collectors, technicians, or anyone who needs a clear magnified view of small items, with the capability to capture the images or even videos. I saw this scope on Amazon a while ago, but wasn't really interested in ordering it because of it's being marketed primarily to kids. But then I looked into the specifications and features and saw that this really is a quality item, with great resolution. The built-in 5" screen which displays the high definition images with wonderful clarity is great, so you don't need to pair it with a smartphone or PC. But if needed, you can remove the included 32GB SD card and use it to transfer the images to any device with an SD card reader to store the images, or share with others. Some other features of this tool include: > A built-in but easily replaceable 18650 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery which powers the scope and monitor. > This is rare in Digital scopes from what I've seen, but the Tomlov contains a LED light source in the base. This is great for illuminating objects from beneath: especially important for viewing translucent items. > The package includes a set of prepared slides with various natural objects on them. Very interesting, even for an adult. > The scope has an easy-to-use rack-and-pinion mount to allow you to position it at the desired height above your object (effectively changing the magnification). The scope body has a large easy-to-turn ring to focus the object. The closer the scope is to the object, the higher the magnification. > There is also a secondary magnification control, and that is a digital zoom control. While I don't care much for digital zooms because the zoomed images get blurrier the more you zoom in, on this unit it's really not that bad. I attached 3 photos to this review: one shows one of the included prepared slides photographed with my camera, then a second with the microscope at maximum optical magnification, then finally one with maximum optical magnification WITH maximum digital zoom applied as well. This last image isn't quite as clear as the one without the digital zoom, but its' still very usable in my opinion. There are actually 4 levels of digital zoom available, on the lower levels are even clearer. Finally, there is a prepared specimen slide holder with spring-loaded slide holders included in the box, a remote control included which allows you to perform any of the functions that you could from the scope's front panel (and much, much more), and a refreshingly long charging/power cable. This plugs into a USB charger (not included, unfortunately). I really have no issues with the unit: the images it produces are first-rate - extremely sharp and clear. If I were to quibble about anything, it would just be two things: 1) The backlight in the base isn't powered by the battery, but rather by a separate plug that's attached to the charging/power cable. Also, there is no way to turn it off except to disconnect that power plug. It would be nice to be able to power that LED off the battery, and to have a control to turn it off when not needed. 2) the scope has a limited height limit, which limits how far you can zoom out from your object. Even when zoomed out to the max you can't even fit an entire coin on the screen, even a dime. But those aren't very important negatives, and it doesn't at all change my opinion of this fine scope. I still find it to be a well-made and extremely useful tool. ... show more

  • Top knotch microscope
This is a FANTASTIC digital microscope! We homeschool and have multiple kids that are wanting to look at the microscope at the same time. When we bought this we weren't sure on the quality since we had never heard of the brand before, but this thing is amazing! The picture quality is better than any other microscope that I have seen that is geared towards using with kids! It has a super bright screen and the image is very clear even when zoomed in as far as it will go. We were able to look at all kinds of things that we look at in every day life and see all of the microscopic things that we would normally miss. The set comes with 12 prepared slides that are super fun to look at. Besides the prepared slides we were able to look at dollar bills, coins, bugs, butterflies, food, and much more in fantastic detail! We even pricked a finger and were able to watch the process of the blood drying and making a scab. It was amazing and you could even see the separate red and white blood cells when we first put it on the slide. We were able to watch it slowly change and scab over. The hidden wonders of the microscopic world are absolutely amazing! You can run this using the included rechargeable battery or you can plug it in with a USB charger. The charge last for a good amount of time and if it gets low all you have to do is plug it in and you can keep using the microscope while it charges. Besides the microscope, this set comes with a power cable, a 32 GB SD Card , 3 light barriers, 12 prepared slides, an IR remote control, and the user manual. If you are looking for a microscope to use with your own kids or in a classroom this is the one you want! It is absolutely amazing! Even though this is geared for kids it is definitely not just for kids. The quality is definitely high enough to use it just as an adult. ... show more

  • Great for the classroom!
What I love most about this microscope is how it creates wonder within my room. My kids absolutely love exploring their environment and seeing what things look like close up! The only change I would make to this microscope is to add a rechargeable battery. It only works while plugged in. I do have a few different portable microscopes and this is the only one that cannot be taken outside to explore with. It's fine for in the classroom but I do have to make sure that it's at a table near an open plug. So, keep that in mind. However, it has great picture quality and it is easy for the children to use and understand, even in kindergarten. It does also come with a set of nice slides and an SD card, so those are perks but you will need a wall charging port. The cable it comes with it a decent length, though, so you can easily plug it in and have it at a table. ... show more

  • 12 megapixel image from 2 megapixel sensor?? NO Mass Storage mode
The redeeming features here are ++ the remote control to trigger photo to remove photo rotation blur or zoom blur from using device's buttons ++ rechargeable battery is user replaceable Compare to other microscopes or digital magnifier handheld with stand, 200x, view screen, 2mp sensor, Mass Storage, native MacOS fixed stand, 500x or 2000x, mobile app view, proprietary MacOS Massive downsides like the handheld is high sensor noise, and "features" user cannot change like AWB, Auto White Balance, or time stamping photos (which locally erode image quality). Copying photos REQUIRES a microSD reader. Connecting USB between MacBook Pro i9 and microscope resulted only in charging. :: do NOT lose the remote. Consider putting it on a tether. ... show more
