After using my new grill for about 6 months I thought others might benefit from my experiences if contemplating purchasing a pellet grill, especially if they have never owned one before. Let me start off by saying that PitBoss is a great product for the money, you can spend a lot more but unless you are looking for some special feature it's not necessary. This grill does everything it advertises and does it well but here's where the "but" comes in. It all starts about 5 years ago when I had a PitBoss vertical smoker, I loved that smoker and used it to death. At that time I was using a propane grill in conjunction with the smoker. It was a match made in heaven, each doing what it was supposed to do. Fast forward a few years, the smoker died and I did not replace it immediately. forward another year and the grill needs to be replaced so I was sure that I could replace both with one unit- enter the PitBoss Sportsman 850. What this all boils down to is that while I love the pellet fuel the grill is dramatically different by way of the way it cooks. There are hot and cold areas all over the cooking surface and the cabin temperature fluctuates substantially from the setting. I feel that this grill is better suited for smoking than grilling. While there is a sliding "sear plate" that exposes open flame it is only a small portion of the cooking area and you are only going to sear 1 steak or 2 burgers at a time. For smoking however it does rate very high in my book. When cooking low and slow the temperature swings are less noticeable and the hot and cold areas sort of blend in better than at high temps. The large pellet hopper is a bonus for doing overnight smokes-I have done many. So, my opinion of this grill is this; great smoker but not as good as my vertical and for grilling, in the absence of the open flame associated with propane or charcoal it's more like baking with smoke. We are the type of people who research an expensive item before buying. We spent about a month comparing this smoker with all the other brands. Then we spent even more time comparing all the different Pit Boss models and their features. We found that Pit Boss smokers were rated higher and cost less than the others and we selected this model because it had the option to grill as well as smoke. We also love having the option of having two different meat thermometers (sold separately) and the ease of using a phone app to control the smoker. The only minor issues that we have since discovered: 1) it’s really heavy and the wheels are only on one side so there are a lot of six-point turns involved when moving it around, 2) when the pellets sink down the hopper, sometimes they create an empty tunnel which causes them to stop flowing even though the hopper is still more than half full, 3) ants can easily climb all over it so we called an exterminator and also bought a cover for the smoker, and now that isn’t a problem anymore, 4) if you have neighbors downwind from you, they may unexpectedly drop by for a visit on when you use this smoker. The good things no one else probably mentions: our back patio is covered with a white ceiling and white ceiling fans, so when we use this smoker, we roll it near the edge of the patio where it still is technically under the roof a bit, but so far after many uses, the white ceiling is not turning black or gray at all. Everything we’ve prepared on this smoker has tasted far superior than grilling: brisket, baby back ribs, sausage, and even veggies wrapped in foil packets; all are much more flavorful and much juicier! ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I’ve cooked a brisket and the thanksgiving turkey. I learned on the brisket. The turkey came out great. Easy to use controls. Like all pellet grills make sure you stir your pellets about once an hour.

    • Broke in less than 60 days and unresolved

At first it was great but I only had it less than 2 months when it stopped working. The temperature wouldn’t get hot. I did all the checklist but the problem wasn’t resolved. I called Amazon that showed they backed it for 60 days. They informed me that they only covered it for 30 days and the warranty with them was up and to call manufacturer. I have been unable to contact them. I ended up having to purchase a different brand in order to have one to cook Thanksgiving Turkey. Still hoping to resolve the problem to get it fixed. Hard to assemble. Had to modify a couple of the holes in order to get it together. But this is the best smoker I've owned. Very happy with temperature control, meat probe, quality of the unit. I bought this for the grill master in our house. If you’ve been on the fence about getting a pellet grill, stop waiting and DO IT! Being in the south, we needed a solution to grilling when it’s humid outside, it didn’t matter how expensive the charcoal, it just needed constant babying. So I surprised my husband with this grill. The price was great, the quality is outstanding, he put the majority of it together without assistance, and he cooks on it 4-5 times per week. Not only that, but he gushes about how much he loves it on the regular. No more changing dinner plans because it’s raining, this pellet grill solves that problem! I also want to do a huge shout out to the delivery team. Let’s face it, this thing is NOT light. They were professional, quick, efficient and very polite during delivery. Not only that but my husband didn’t know it was coming, total surprise. They handled his fan girl reaction very well, haha! I know it’s just a small thing but it meant a lot to us! ... show more
