Frequently asked questions

The Masterbuilt Gravity Series 800 features a digital control system that allows you to set and modify the cooking temperature and time with precision. It digitally controls the rate at which the charcoal burns to achieve and maintain the desired temperature. You can adjust the settings based on the type of food you're cooking or your personal cooking preference.

The Gravity Series 800 functions as a griddle, grill, and smoker. As a griddle, it provides a flat surface for even cooking, perfect for pancakes or eggs. As a grill, it can sear meats at high temperatures for a short period of time to achieve a great flavor. The smoker feature lets you slow-cook food at a lower temperature to infuse it with smoky flavors.

Despite its digital features, the Masterbuilt 800 Grill uses charcoal as its fuel source. This allows the grill to reach a wide range of temperatures—from smoking low and slow to searing hot—while maintaining that authentic smoky flavor associated with traditional grilling.

Yes, the Masterbuilt Gravity Series 800 comes with a Bluetooth compatibility feature, which allows you to control the grill remotely from your smart device using the Masterbuilt app. This feature lets you adjust the temperature, monitor cooking time, and even power on or off the grill from a distance.

  • Masterbuilt Gravity Series 800 converted into a bbq war machine! :D
Style: Gravity Series 800
The media could not be loaded. I purchased the Masterbuilt Gravity Series 800 in December '24. I could not be more pleased with the performance of this amazing bbq smoker! Its construction is very solid overall (thick structural steel in legs, lid, outside of hopper and pans); however the charcoal burning section of the hopper (firebox) is relatively weak and not durable in the long run (thin stainless steel walls that will corrode in a few years of weekly or bi-weekly use). While this chamber has ceramic heat insulation panels behind the original firebox plates, this is insufficient for the very high temperature produced there. Fortunately, in the market there are modifications that make the Masterbuilt Gravity Series a true bbq war machine. As soon as I received the equipment, I bought some accessories from LSS mods (firebox, hopper cover, inlet grate for hopper, super-sear manifold with base and cover and ash bucket grate). I have posted some pictures of the "overhauling" process of this beautiful bbq smoker. Additionally, I have sealed the hopper gaskets with a high temperature sealant (Kraken), replaced the default thermometer with a beautiful Lavalock (3 in. Face, 3 in Stem, M8 Thread), purchased the Levain & Co Meat Temperature and Smoking Temperature Magnets, and modified the left service tray by making it hinged (for easy storage). Check out the video I uploaded! ;) With these modifications I'm sure I will extend the longevity of the smoker for many years to come! I can't wait to try the pizza oven accessory! I will keep you posted! :) ... show more

  • It's a smoker, agrill, and comes with a GRIDDLE!!
Style: Gravity Series 800
I've had my Masterbuilt 800 for 6 weeks now. The gravity feed charcoal is a game changing design for me. You can layer the charcoal box with charcoal or charcoal wood, then wood pieces for smoking, then charcoal, etc. And the ash bucket is at the bottom and makes clean-up a snap. Assembly wasn't too bad. It may take you longer than you plan on so give yourself plenty of time. After assembly, be sure to season the grill correctly. Check out the videos on youtube for assistance. There is tons of information available. I know, because I think I watched them all. LOL I did make the most perfect smoked ribs I ever had. Along with grond beef jerkey, chicken, pork chops, wings, and fish. You can literally smoke something for a couple of hours, then turn up the grill to 700 degrees for finalizing cooking or searing if necessary. In about 7 minutes it will be up to temp from 250 degrees. No matter what temperature you set its pretty even and doesn't divate much at all. However be aware, like any other grills, there are your hot and cool spots inside. The griddle is a nice touch. The cooking manifold swtches out in about 30 seconds, and the griddle is HEAVY and a perfect surface to cook on and attaches easily. You shoud by some griddlle accessories for cooking on it however. I made smash burgers and they came out good and smelled up the neighborhood.. "cheezee bugar cheezee bugar, Pepsi, no Coke... I think it was the grilled onions. The control panel works well, but for some reason, somewhere between the time you turn it on and about 5 to 10 miutes later, the blower turns off and you have to repower the panel by turning it on and off. It works fine after that, but it has happenned 3 times already. Just be sure to monitor it at first until you get used to using it. I did download the app for operating the temp and timer from my phone. That worked well at first, but it is bluetooth, so if you walk away to far with your phone in your pocket you may loose connection and the fan will turn off. I generally don't use the app since I like to be outside with a beer and cigar when I'm queing. If your "on the fence" about buying one... don't be. You won't be sorry. I had a Trager pellet grill I bought 7 years ago. It was ok, but never really got the smoke taste I was missing like using the Masterbuilt. Plus, you cant sear with it, and it doesn't come with a GRIDDLE. Lastly, if you made it this far, search Masterbuilt mods. They're aftermarket accessories specifically for the grill. I bought the whole shebang before I put it together and am glad I did. If you have extra money do your research and get that also. Hope this helps. Happy grilling. ... show more

  • DO NOT BUY THIS-Fan shuts off until100F after 20 minutes
Style: Gravity Series 800
We so wanted this grill to be the crème de le crème of grills. The ultimate grill for serious grill masters. This grill is the absolute perfect CONCEPT BUT WITH A FATAL FLAW DESIGN. We loved the fact that this grill could get up too 700 degrees and is gravity fed charcoal. You could cook a ton of stuff on it….if it worked properly. THE PROBLEM: It will only work as stated for the first 20 min- ie.,it will heat up, Fan will turn on until it gets to desired temp and then turn off until it drops 10-15 degrees, then back on to maintain that desired temp BUT FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME of 20 min. AFTER THAT….the fan shuts off AND DOES NOT COME BACK ON until it reaches all the way down to 100 degrees F all the while you have your chicken or whatever else you are cooking is just sitting there on the grill barely warm. There are two side vents to help regulate the temp/fan as well, but even then, the fan stays off until it goes back to 100F. The temp sensor can connect to Bluetooth if you desire to troubleshoot. We’ve tried cooking on this grill several times even showing it off to friends and family because my husband was soooo excited about the ultimate design. We have tried cooking meat on this grill several times and it does the same thing over and over. We’ve had to always finish cooking out meat in the oven d/t it partially cooked because the grill fan continually shuts off after 15-20 min and does not turn back on until it gets all the way down to 100 degrees-clearly not enough heat to cook our meat. Forget it if you have a large party or want to smoke ribs or a pork butt. It will take hours and hours and nothing but a big fat embarassment. It’s like having a Tesla that loses its charge driving down the road…expensive, nice concept, but worthless if you want to eat dinner before 10pm. The irregular temp control makes thr meat unevenly cooked, under and over as you constantly have to troubleshoot the temp. We’ve watched countless YouTube videos, emailed customer service several times, and tried to contact a live person. They have very poor customer service, as it’s virtually impossible to get ahold of anyone except via email and they make you jump through multiple hoops by locating the serial number and taking a photo and sending in a receipt to prove you actually own the grill BEFORE YOU CAN EVEN SEND AN EMAIL TO GET HELP! The grill’s biggest defect is in the apparatus that controls the fan and temperature. We received quite lame email instructions back for trouble-shooting. Our first email back simply described how the fan and temp gauge worked, Duh! The third email stated how to reset the trmo sensor with WiFi or to make sure the proper codes were showing. I finally just emailed them to tell them we’d tried everything as my husband was willing to do everything within his power to get this grill to work properly. ONLY AFTER I SAID WE ARE RETURNING IT (as I was within a 2 day window of not being able to return back to Amazon)did the customer rep from masterbuilt call us as we’d left our number in the first email 2 weeks prior. He only said “well…I don’t know. Sorry”. That’s it. I’ve heard horror stories where others bought their grills on the Masterbuilt site and they put people off until the window is expired to return it. You must register this product with Masterbuilt in order to have parts covered under the one year warranty. This does not guarantee you can return it. Luckily, I returned it to Amazon within the allotted time frame for a full refund! Whew! I barely made it and would have been out almost $800 if not. Overall, this grill would be the bomb if the fan and temp sensor would regulate properly, otherwise you cannot use it like a regular grill since it’s gravity-fed. It’s rendered useless. Sadly, to my husbands disappointment, the customer service was so poor that we had no choice but to return it in time to get our money back. Hopefully one day someone can make it work. All other reviews on grills similar to this seem to have the epic fail between the fan and temp sensor-thereby, doesn’t work. ... show more
