I purchased this one for our second coop after liking another so much in the other coop. I have not had to clean algae at all and we used it all summer. I did have two nipples that immediately leaked on this one, but they had three replacement nipples in the box. I replaced those two and no problem. The water lasts a long time and no cleaning! I bought my first one from TSC and it worked great until one of my chickens pulled at the metal nipple and sprung it. Lol. But you can physically inspect it in the store to make sure everything is good with it. But since "chick season" is over, TSC doesn't carry these right now. So when my spring sprung on the middle nipple, nobody had replacement nipples or the waterer! So I bought a brand new waterer on Amazon while getting a quick fix at Ace to plug the hole where I removed the leaky nipple, just to not waste all 12 gallons in my existing waterer until my new one came. Ugh! CHORE! It got here today, November 10, 2023, and yet...lo and behold! The middle, stupid, nipple was dripping like crazy! And the chickens hadn't even gotten to it yet! So now I had to figure that out!!! Beware buying from Amazon on tricky things like this! I can't even buy the nipples at TSC right now, at this time of year, because nobody bothers keeping chicken things in stock until Spring comes and chick season begins except feed and normal stuff! UPDATE: Since that day, all three of the nipples on the one I ordered are defective and I had to replace them. Today is November 17th. I don't expect any responses from the company. They don't seem to care what people have been saying about this same issue that others have experienced. I have yet to see a complaint answered by them. So, just to reiterate...Don't buy online. Find them in a store so, at lease, you can physically inspect it before spending your money on one. I purchased 2 of these and only 1 nipple needed tighten due to leaking. I suggest testing them out prior to use to make sure they dont leak. You will need to have some way to set them on something sturdy otherwise your chickens will get them dirty scratching mulch, dirt etc on them. I recommend placing a pure silver coin or colloidal silver in them to help reduce bacteria and allow the water to be used for longer. If you used cups like I did before changing to these. I simply removed the cup type containers and showed the chickens the water will come out of the nipples and they switched over night. Once they see others using it they will all begin to use the nipples. Once a month I'll throw the water out and rinse with water. The water stays clean due to the silver coin and colloidal silver which is also beneficial to your flock. ... show more

The container is very sturdy and it holds a lot of water, but the lid does not fit well and so lots of small bugs end up inside the water. Although it may contain enough water to hold over for a week or more, I have to clean it too often to reap that benefit.

We have loved this for our hens. We have 18 chicks and they have all learned and transitioned to this easily. It holds about 2 weeks worth of water and keeps it clean. Easy lid comes off easily for a simple refilling process. The cups are sturdy and haven’t broken.     • Right size and concept, not quite engineered common sense

First and foremost, I would have rated it 5 stars for size, concept, and more days between refilling. I will update this once I've had a chance to put it to use over winter as that is what I bought it for. Secondly, now for the initial impressions, inspections, and nipple test: 1) I agree with what many customers have said about the nipples not being low on the tank so you really don't get the use out of a full tank. There is "wasted" water so you need to be mindfull of when you need to refill the tank. The built in "pedestal" to raise the nipples off the ground is great for baby chicks as it's the right height. For adult chickens, you need the to put the tank on a higher raised platform of some kind as its too low for them, regardless if it's this waterer or another type using nipples. 2) regarding leaking nipples, I noticed there are no nuts to screw in and hold the nipples to prevent them from popping out. This will definitely cause leaks, even with the gaskets. I added the nuts to the waterer to ensure the nipples are secured. I water tested for leakage from the holes (not the nipples) and they held up nicely. 3) my chickens have somehow managed to sprung the spring on 3 nipples in 3 months on my bucket waterer. Once the spring is sprung, there is no stopping the leak, you need to replace the nipple. I bought extra nipples just for that purpose. So if you're experiencing leaking nipples, replace them as the spring is sprung. From the many videos I've reviewed submitted by other customers complaining about leaking nipples, that's what I saw: sprung springs. 4) not enough nipples for tank size. I drilled 2 extra holes to add more nipples, one on each end. 5) the seams of the tank does appear to be thinner than the body of the tank. I can only hope that it will hold up over winter. If not, I will have to apply some kind of sealant like another customer has mentioned. 6) the deicer power cord acces on the lid is great but I find that it would works as intended if the cord is flexible and can bend back 180. I'm a little wary that this will be a problem over winter with the low temp. With the size of the lid, the deicer will be at the back of the tank if you hang it from there and not centered. As a precaution I added a dowel to the tank so the deicer hangs towards the middle. 7) the size makes it awkward to carry, especially since I'm small in stature and don't have the arms' reach that an average person would have. Carrying handles would be a great benefit. This is not to say I was wrong in my purchase decision. The tank is meant to stay in place for the winter. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and I will update my review in the spring. ... show more
