It is great that I don't have to feed everyday, but do check on food level from time to time. I did leave a little bit of food on the opening, so the chickens knew food was there. They picked up on it fast. Enjoy watching them stick their heads in there to eat. Clean food and less waste. They still pull some food out onto the ground. We've had the matching waterer for years now, but my feeder just broke so I was looking for an upgrade. I ended up finding this and I love it! It holds a lot! the food doesn't get everywhere. The chickens took to it really quickly. It's good quality with nice thick plastic. Highly recommend.

I bought both the feeder and waterer. I put out the feeder first as it was winter here and I didn't have a heater for the waterer yet. I put it in place of the old feeder out in the middle of the run, but with our sub zero temps one of the chickens must have knocked off the lid and somehow broke it. This is the only flaw in the design is the lid is made of a thinner plastic and the reason it didn't get a full 5 star review. Anyway, I contacted the company letting them know, hoping to be able to purchase a new lid as I used the lid off of the waterer to replace the broken feeder lid. Nice that they are interchangeable. Which left me one lid short. The company sent out a new lid free and I had it with in a few days. I have since moved the feeder into the coop since blowing snow was still able to get into and plug the feed openings, although rain was kept out. I like how it is able to go against a wall, so it can be put even in a narrow coop with enough room for the chickens to eat comfortably. I've had it for many months now and still like it a lot, it has completely solved the waste of feed on the ground which was a big problem with my hens. We previously used a large tray and our chickens wokld scratch the food all over the place. They would end up wasting so much and the rain would wash it all away and ruin it. With the younger hens feed being crumbles I had to go in and help pull the feed to the holes, but once we switched to the crumbles it falls perfectly. This is a great feeder. Even at the price, it is a good deal because I shoveled more than 150 lbs of spoiled food out the coop when I installed this feeder. After two full bags of feed, there is only a little spoiled feed on the floor. I am so happy that I purchased another feeder so that my hens will have easier and more ready access to feed when they want it. The feeder seems to be put together nicely and the plastic looks to be thick enough to last. If I see any cracks (as some others have reported) then I will reinforce the corners with some fiberglass cloth and resin. At $21 a bag for feed, this feeder will actually pay for itself in the amount of spoiled feed I have found over the years. My daily cost of feed usage went from $3.42 to $1.71 after transitioning to this feeder; so it will take some time to recover the cost but the recovery time is in the two to three month time frame for each feeder. I suspect that the recovery time will be better because I have 9 pullets that will join the flock in the next couple of weeks. ... show more
