This is a 3/8" grip ring caster for use on hard surfaces like hardwood floors or tile. This is an older stem size used on many steelcase chairs. Most newer chairs use the 7/16" size instead, which explains the problems with fitment some people have had. Many chairs come with hard plastic wheels designed for carpet and can scratch hardwood floors. These roll like a dream and are soft enough to dent with a fingernail, but I will still use a chair mat for extra insurance because I have one that I used with my old wheels ;). ... show more

The casters were for an old SteelCase chair, from 1982. The old casters scuffed our hardwood floor. The reason I only gave 4 stars is that there hasn't been time to try out the new casters on the newly refinished hardwood floor. The listing on Amazon: Oajen 2-3/8" Soft Wheel Chair Caster Wheel for Hardwood floor, 3/8" x 1" Grip Ring stem, says Hardwood, so the casters should work. The old casters had a brass or copper ring in the stem, which was smaller than the steel ring in the Oajen casters. The ring was removed from the Oajen caster and replaced with the ring from the old caster. Without that replacement, the Oajen casters would not go all the way in on the chair. With the replacement, the Oajen casters snaps into place. ... show more

The title is misleading, and image is misinformed. This is not a soft wheel chair caster. It is hard plastic, which may not damage the hardwood floor. But labelling it as soft wheel chair caster is purely incorrect. soft wheel caster should be rubber based.

Spent quite some time looking for a replacement set of wheels. Tried the 'universal' fit type but the stem was too big in diameter. Wanted rollerblade style wheels, but could not find any that had the right stem diameter, so I settled on these.     • Works very well on my 1/2 in. thick hardwood floor
It rolls like very smooth and doesn't mark my hardwood floor. Chairs roll easily in any direction with 215 lb person. Well worth the cost.
