  • Excellent product
Pattern Name: Trash Can
It’s the best trash can that I have ever had. Easy to clean and looks great. I would recommend it to anyone.

  • Surprised at how much I can love a trash can!
Pattern Name: Trash Can
Ok, I've had this trash can for over two months now and my love affair with it is not waning one bit. First of all, it is very attractive and I love the shape. I wanted something not quite as 'roundy' as my previous one, so that it would sit more nicely up against the end of the cabinets where I have it placed. This takes up a lot less space, which is optimal since that is a traffic area from the kitchen through my small laundry room and into the garage. It gets an A+ for that. Next, is the operation of the touchless opening and closing of the lid. Although I do have this in a high traffic area of my house, I find that it has not been problematic at all for opening when I don't want it to. This happens to me much less than once a day and I walk through there probably 20-30 times a day. So, it's a non-issue. The parts are easy to keep clean and, as long as I don't empty the Dyson canister in and try to blow off the dust I get on the side (BTDT more times than I'd like to admit), it stays clean and tidy. But, if you get debris on the inside of the top piece it is just very easy to take it off, turn off the auto open switch, wash things off, and turn it back on and put it together again. Nothing is complicated at all. It is well made and a very decent grade of stainless steel so you don't feel like if you breathe on it wrong it will dent. Of course, I'm sure it is dentable if you have people playing baseball in your kitchen or something but, outside of extreme abuse, I think it will hold up for a very long time. Just be sure to put the lid on where the front of the lid is on the side of the trash can that does not have the seam down the middle, and it looks nicer. My only frustration curve, and it was a very minor one, was with seating the trash bag in the ring and getting it on there neatly and without the bag showing. It took me one time to get that down well and make it easy. It only took the cleaning lady two times, and she is one who cannot stand having to try and do something new, no matter not uncomplicated, so that says a lot toward it not being problematic. You easily get the feel for it and it takes a couple of seconds. One other thing I'd like to add - This was impeccably packed. I worry about ordering stainless steel items because so often you receive it and it has been dented in shipment. This can was packed so well by the manufacturer that it would have had to be run over by a truck to be damaged. Very impressive! In closing, really, there is nothing I don't like about this trash can. It is totally worth the price which, here at Amazon, is really very very good. I am absolutely thrilled that I found this one and I am also very thankful for all the help from Ali Julia with her review and remarks. ... show more

  • Stopped Working after 2 years - REVISED!
Pattern Name: Trash Can
The media could not be loaded. Really nice trash can. Worked well for 2 years. Then lid stopped opening. Figured it had to be out of any warranty period... so I ordered a replacement lid. New lid arrived 4/15/20. Worked for about 2 months then began malfunctioning. I tried to call ninestars customer service but could only leave messages in a general mailbox. Emailed them all my information to apply for a warranty replacement about 2 weeks ago.... haven’t heard a peep. Very disappointing. My brother bought his sensor trash can at Costco at about same time and has had no trouble at all. In addition his doesn’t have the plastic collar ring everyone complains about and does have a removable plastic insert. Guess I’ll go pick up one from Costco. 🤷♂️ Okay, so I was clearly upset that they took their time getting back to me. But they did not long after my original post. They offered to send a new top, and told me to keep the old one. It arrived relatively fast, and despite being used and abused on a daily basis, and being over 2 years old now, it continues to work flawlessly to this day. And the ring is no thing. In fact I bought the CB-DZT-50-13/12-13, which has an Updated kitchen trash can and a smaller “mini me” can for the bathroom. I do recommend this trash can. But I’d go with the newer model, it looks better and has a wider opening. ... show more

  • Mama like. Replacement parts are available.
Pattern Name: Trash Can
We bought this can as a set with a smaller can (which we never actually used) back in 2011? from Costco. Many complain that the can stopped working in a matter of months, but we only recently started having problems with it which were not resolved by a simple battery change. I'll begin with the story of dealing with mechanical failures. Although I found that replacement lids could be purchased from the Nine Stars website for slightly more than half the cost of buying a whole replacement can, they were out of stock on the lids and I didn't get a response back about when they might restock them for several days, so I ordered a whole replacement can here (which incredibly arrived less than 24 hours later even though I selected free 2-day Prime shipping!). Meanwhile, I checked their "troubleshooting" section and found that by cleaning the contacts on the battery clips with baking soda and allowing it to sit open without batteries for over a day, the existing lid became functional again, although not quite as well as before. (it could be that moisture had built up inside, and some of the improvement occurred with drying, as well as allowing it to "reboot".) Since it was working well enough to use again, we did not unpack the new one purchased here. Just today I finally got a call back from Nine Stars saying replacement lids were back in (though not yet on the website) and I ordered one, thinking I could return the unopened can and come out ahead. However the return shipping cost, even for us to take it to a facility that could accept it, canceled out most of the savings when you add the cost of the new lid, so I will just keep the new can and find some way to deal with/reuse the (completely undented/unscratched) can bottom when the time comes to swap it out altogether. MORAL OF THE STORY; if you have one of these and don't tend to bash up your stuff, get in touch with Nine Stars and buy a backup lid when you notice functionality starting to decline. Even if yours lasts as long as ours has, it will need to be replaced eventually. The can itself is pretty durable and chances are you won't need or want to replace the whole thing. Now, on to the product itself. I liked the idea of this can because I'm the food prepper and like to minimize hand rewashing when I'm on task. I also like gadgets, truth be told. And although my husband is annoyed by the unintentional openings when he's fooling around in the kitchen, I am not bothered by it unless our trash is getting an attitude. Also, it may become less sensitive over time; it seems now I do have to wave my hands directly over it before it registers, whereas when we first got it, you might occasionally set it off from more than a foot away. This can fits in the only space we have for it, between a cabinet and a radiator, and neither obstructs the drawer (unless you move so slowly the can Volunteers! before you get the drawer all the way open) nor takes up much space in the room. It still has a useful capacity, and a larger can just ends up making it harder/heavier to take out the trash. It's also a reasonably priced steel can if you compare it to other nice step cans in the same size range. We had a fairly decent steel step can before, but the hinge on the back tore the wall up and it was round rather than a wall-hugging rectangle like this one, so we had to move it more often to get into the bottom cabinet. Also, the lid opening was as large as the can diameter itself, which some might prefer, but I like that the opening on this can is not. There are places in life where full transparency is not necessarily desirable, and the trash can is one of them as far as I'm concerned. I don't get the full impact of the sights and smells of our kitchen refuse with this lid design. I also have not had any problem fitting the bottom-release dust cups from my Shark Navigator Freestyle or Shark Rotator into the mouth of the can. I like that the lid ring holds the bag edges tidily out of sight, and I find that the lid and can are both easy to clean with just a couple of disinfectant wipes. The surface doesn't seem to show dirt or fingerprints too badly, and we never had a problem with the lid coating peeling off like others have mentioned. Every so often I hose the can out if we have a bag leak inside, but it doesn't seem to be hard to keep civilized. Since the bottom of the can is not metal, rust hasn't been an issue. We replace batteries every couple of months, but we use rechargeables so your mileage may vary. The first can used 4x D batteries, the new one uses 3x C but does not require noticeably more frequent changes. Sometimes I forget that all trash cans don't open this way, and realize belatedly that I'm waving my hands over the trash can in the breakroom at work as if I were preparing to pull a rabbit or a string of multicolored scarves out of it. Same experience in assorted ladies' rooms. And I'll do it more than once, as if I'm wondering what's the matter with *the trash can*. Really, this is the only major drawback for me. The motion sensor thing has ruined me for other kinds of cans. I do wish I'd had a better experience with getting a replacement lid for it (or at least with communication, as I would have been happy to wait a week or two if I'd known that's about how long it would take for them to come in), and also wish the lid had lasted a while longer before replacement was needed, but there are bound to be tradeoffs, and for my part, I found the price to be worth it. ... show more
