  • Excellent fan. I've installed two
Color: White
Excellent fan. I've installed two, and keep ordering them for friends and family. Very easy installation, although I would prefer that the pictures in the instructions be a bit more detailed. The remote is large and easy to use. I've added a wall remote to both of the ones I've put in. This fan is gorgeous, very modern. It throws a huge amount of air, due to the curved blades. The light is very bright, but has a dimmer built in. Both fans are rock solid steady when on at high speed. Very well balanced. You can hear a slight whine at high speed. High speed blows papers all over the room. Get it, you'll like it. ... show more

  • PAIN in the BUTT to install, but works well/ looks nice
Color: White
After replacing all the light fixtures in my house, I thought the obvious next step was the heinous, low-hanging living room ceiling fan (my house was flipped before I bought it with some interestingly modern taste). My ceiling is low so I ordered the 3.5" down-rod, which worked, but was a PAIN to install. First, as other reviewers have said, the receiver should be pre-wired and built into the unit. It barely barely fits into the canopy with all the wires, caps, hanger ball, and housing. Took me several evenings of taping up and bending wires so they're out of the way but still under the canopy. The manual is vague and the images are not detailed enough for a smooth assembly/ installation for first-timers. Some online videos help, but still don't give some of the detail you need to be successful (like precisely how to put the hanging ball on the down-rod, hint: rubber mallet!). Plan on several hours of tinkering and attempting to understand the installation instructions. If you use a short down-rod, its impossible to use a screwdriver to install the canopy and canopy cover because of the conical shape of the motor cover. I improvised and used some pliers to turn the screws and a really short driver bit to tighten, which did work in the end. One other note, I cannot get the LED to dim at all and its so bright/harsh you could do surgery under it. I will not be using the light unless I find a way to make it dim- I'm considering an off-brand dimmer switch because I would not be able to stand the distraction of the constant blue light in the Minka Aire one. Otherwise, now that its up and the pain is over, I do enjoy how quiet it is on low or medium (high is audible, but not over other ambient noises like music or TV) and how clean and sleek the fan is against a matching white ceiling. Its also high enough that I can't whack my hand on it while doing yoga, which was a main concern. ... show more

  • The secret to dimming the light is….
Color: White
My interior designer chose this fan for our family room. We really like it. It gives gives plenty of air, is sleek looking and doesn’t stand out. Our ceilings and walls are white and that’s what we were going for. We have had this fan for just shy of a year now and always wondered why the remote control seemed like it had a dim the light option but never found it to work that way. I finally emailed the company ( they have great customer service by the way!) and felt compelled to come back and leave q review along with their response in hopes of helping others. Here is why that they said, “ The light dims in range by pressing and holding down the same button to turn on/off the light to see if it brightens or dims to your liking. Thank you kindly.” Alas! The lights do dim!! You won’t be disappointed in this fan. Should you have any issues, email them with a copy of your receipt ( so they know what you purchased) at fantech@minka.com ... show more

  • Buy 2, get one working unit
Color: White
This is a story of a man named Brady….. Oh, yeah…. This is about the Minka-Aire 844. It is a story nonetheless and a review I wished I would have read and whether you choose to purchase or not, could save you a fair amount of frustration. The net of the story, we bought three fans and had to use two of the fans (boxes) to salvage enough parts to get one WORKING fan. If you need more and are interested in my mental pain and suffering, read on. I am sure you will find it amusing, at my expense of course. We ordered 3 fans. 3 separate rooms. We started by replacing the fan in my office. The directions are adequate and really, if you have hung fans before it is not that difficult. Usually a 30-40 minute job (provided you don’t need to add bracing) and you hit the switch and the glorious breeze and lighting kicks in. In our case, this was the expectation…. But, in our story, we hit the switch, the breaker popped and everything in my office shutdown (I should also mention in that process my computer shut down dirty and I need to reinstall the OS at a minimum). Bad cabling job you say? Rubbish, everything was in order and perfect as a warm and breezy night watching the sunset over the ocean. Hmmmm.. could it be the wiring or an old circuit breaker? Nah, this house is only 3 years old and the last CHEAP fan and light worked. Hmmmm.. There are 3 possibilities here. Wiring, faulty transmitter, short in the motor. Well. We bought three, lets start salvaging parts. Replaced the transmitter with the new transmitter from the second box.. Popped the circuit. OK, lets move on to the motor. How ‘bouts putting that second fan together? We already opened the box, right? Seat the new fan, wire in its transmitter and….. Light. Houston. We have light. But, the remote doesn’t work? Can’t be. Reading every google on the topic and finally giving in to calling support, they mentioned direct cabling the beast. Of course you wouldn’t be able to control fan speed or the lights, but it would rule out the transmitter. Well. I am too smart for that. I took the transmitter out of the box that shipped with the motor that had a short in it and wired that in. Hit the light switch and the skies parted with a beautiful rainbow washing away the storm that just swept through my office. Yep. Of the two boxes (fan kits) we opened, one contained a motor with a short and the other contained a faulty transmitter. That is several hours of my life I won’t get back and thankfully I didn’t call an electrician and pay their rate to tell me the same. Buy with caution. We are sending the 3rd box back that we purchased as well as the second box full with the faulty transmitter and the motor with a short. What about the one that I cobbled together to install? Why would I keep it? Well, this is the second fan bracket that has been drilled into these studs. I think it better to roll the dice, than to drill in a third. Net. If you decide to buy and go forward, please kindly remember this review to save yourself the frustration and maybe my abbreviated troubleshooting tips will help you. Quick update. The single fan that we kept does have a nice bright light and is quiet. It also produces an excellent amount of breeze, even on the lowest setting. I still will not change my rating due to the horrible QA that caused two separate boxes (fans) to both have faulty parts. Sad. ... show more
