Directions: FOR USE WITH A METAL PAN, DOUBLE WALL FOUNTAIN AS WELL AS HARRIS FARMS OR FREE RANGE™ PLASTIC DRINKERS 1. Place the Heater Base directly on a hard flat surface inside a protected area. 2. Place the pan, double wall fount, or plastic drinker on the surface of the heater base. 3. Plug the product directly into a properly grounded 120 volt AC GFCI receptacle outlet. Do not use with an extension cord. (If a proper GFCI receptacle isn’t available, contact a licensed electrician to install a proper GFCI receptacle that meets local, state and national electric codes). 4. Direct the supply cord and place the heated base properly to shield from livestock damage. 5. Allow 30 minutes for the unit to warm to temperature. The upper exterior of the product will get exceedingly hot to the touch. 6. Unplug, clean, and store when not in use. 7. Store the heater base indoors after the winter season. Always inspect electrical cord before using. Read all instructions. 8. Do not use extension cords. LIMITED

With this arctic blast that we’re going through the temperature has been 2° and the water has never frozen with the heater. We have battled frozen water for years now and finally broke down and bought this heater. I use this with the plastic but heavy duty Miller Little Giant Plastic Poultry Waterer, 5 gallons. Works great. It doesn't get hot enough to melt it. I’ve used it 3 seasons in a row now, and it works really well. Around here temperatures will get down to about 10 degrees but average maybe 20 in the winter. But this thing produces a good amount of heat and actually warms the water just a bit, maybe too warm, keeping the water from freezing. I have it setup on top of 2 concrete blocks. I just add water every couple of days using 1 gallon water containers I bring from the house. Every week or so, I clean out the tray. Every month, I take it in and give it a good scrubbing and replace all the water with fresh, clean water. Doing this helps me not to worry about my birds having access to clean water. ... show more

    • Works Perfectly! Makes for Efficient Set-Up.

This is our third (and, finally, successful!) attempt to provide ice-free drinking water for our chickens. We've tried versions of plastic waterers, which were very hard to clean and fill without unplugging and dragging the whole unit out of the coop almost every day, so going with the base heater with the additional metal waterer on top, which can easily be lifted and carried into a warm environment for filling and cleaning, has been the most efficient setup for us. Also, I'm not a fan of using heated plastic anyway, as chemicals can leach into the water. The temp has been in the teens and this has been working great. It has the added benefit of raising the water about three inches higher off of the bottom on the coop, which has avoided almost all mess falling into the water. Got this to use with our heavy duty plastic water tanks. We have a couple " heated waterer's" and they are just a pain to refill. This works great, has not damaged them at all, and seems to be just the right temperature.

This heater base is absolutely amazing! We live in North Dakota and we have had extreme negative temperatures this winter. This was our first winter with the chickens and we needed something to help keep their water from freezing. I knew the water might still freeze below 32 but it didn’t. Last night was-22 and the water was not frozen. This heater is the best. I will most likely be buying another one as a backup.
