  • pretty decent hose cart
Style: Cart
After reading so many poor reviews of lots of hose carts, I cautiously ordered the Liberty 870-M1-2. It arrived and I put it together yesterday. It's better than I was expecting it to be. It was easy to assemble with a few simple hand tools. It's pretty sturdy and I think it will last a while, but time will tell. I didn't apply a clear coat, but I may before I put on a longer hose, I've only got 100' on it so far. Also I might change out the hardware for some stainless fasteners to prevent rusting. I'll do a follow up in a few months. 5/15/2023 - I put 200' of 3/4" hose and it works great! I ended up clear coating this with clear Rustoleum from a spray can, and I'm glad I did. I don't leave it outside in the elements too often, but when I do and it gets rained on, it tends to get water inside the tubing. I'm sure this will contribute to shortening it's lifespan so I always turn it over and try to drain out as much water as I can. I had a tire get a hole in it a year after purchase. It seemed like this tire was probably defective from the beginning as the rubber around the hole was very very thin. I bought a replacement pair of wheels and tires from Amazon for about $30. No issues since then. Overall this has been a great hose cart and I recommend it! The only thing it's lacking is a place to hold it down with your foot when winding a hose in. It tends to want to move around a bit if you're not deliberate with cranking it. This feature would make it perfect! ... show more

  • A very solid hose cart
Style: Cart
I bought this cart to replace yet another plastic cart that managed to last two or three years. This time, I decided to go a step up, and get what my wife calls "the last hose cart we'll ever buy." (Time will tell!) It arrived well packed, with all the pieces, including screws. I'm reasonably good at putting things together -- I never met a Christmas toy that I couldn't assemble before morning -- and this cart went together in about 30 min. or so. The construction of the parts is really good, with a nice, solid feel, and a heavy enamel paint job. The hose connections are solid brass, and the crank system has good bearings. It's heavyweight, but not ridiculously so. If treated well, this thing should last for years. Everything goes together with two metric wrenches or sockets, plus a crescent wrench; if you can assemble a kid's bike, this is a piece of cake. Then, we had a little wrinkle ... One of the tires arrived flat as a pancake, and wouldn't inflate, no matter how many times I tried -- even at the gas station. The slip in the box said to call Liberty's 800 number between 9:00AM - 4:30PM Eastern Time for help. It was now 5:45 (EDT) on a Friday, but I decided to try anyway. I was pleasantly surprised when a polite man answered the phone, took my address, and promised that a replacement wheel would ship on Monday. On Thursday, I called again, this time at 8:35AM, and a woman answered the phone, found my tracking number, and told me the wheel was out for delivery that day. I put the fourth (fifth?) wheel on, and it works great! I'm not overjoyed about the bad wheel, but the mark of a good company is how well they fix mistakes, because they're bound to happen. Liberty gave me no hassle, they just sent a new wheel. I rate this at 4.5 stars, although the review system only allows whole stars. In use, the cart moves well, and turns nicely by tipping back on the handle to lift the front wheels off the ground. Turning front wheels might make this easier, buy I like the stability of the fixed wheels. It rolls over uneven ground without a hitch, and the nice, beefy handle will reel in a couple of hundred feet of water-filled hose without binding. The only complaint that I have is that the hose attaches straight out from the side, which leaves a service loop of hose around the outside of the rim of the reel; I wish it had a right-angle mount. (They're probably available at a hardware store. One note: The cart is rated for 300 feet of hose. That might be true if one uses the skinny green 'homeowner' style vinyl hose. I put 150 feet of reinforced rubber contractor-grade hose on the cart (might as well do the whole job right), and it looks like there might be enough reel left for another 50-75 feet of the same hose. YMMV. ... show more

  • 4th summer and still going strong! - 8 YEAR UPDATE
Style: Cart
I purchased this hose real in the spring of 2014. I have 3 - 5/8" x 100' heavy duty hose lengths on the reel. Once filled with water, it's a lot of weight and this thing moves it vey easily. I'm in Wisconsin so I drain the hoses and store it indoors from November to March but it has really held up well. Have I had a few problems? Yes. One of the tires went flat last summer so I replaced that. The leader hose also ended up springing a leak this year but it was due to the way I was bending it when pulling away from the house. And it took 3 1/2 seasons of abuse before that happened. I water flowers throughout the yard EVERY DAY. Also, is there some rust? YES! It's a hose reel. It sits outside in the elements and gets wet. It's going to rust. Unless it's the centerpiece of your landscape I don't think a few small specks of rust, or rusty bolts on the wheel hubs are that big of a deal. It still functions perfectly fine. In fact, more than that. It functions perfectly. It doesn't tip over when winding/unwinding the hose, it rolls very easily with lots of weight and it winds/unwinds almost effortlessly. What more could you ask for? Why does your hose reel need to sparkle? I see comments about people putting clear coat and taking other action to keep it from rusting. Why don't you get your buffer out once a month and wax it like a car. That might help! But if you don't care about the appearance of your hose reel, this is the unit for you! Even if you do care about the appearance of your hose reel, the entire thing isn't a pile of rust. There's a few small spots here and there and some of the hardware has rusted over. It's really not a big deal. Don't let that discourage you from this unit. 4/27/2022 UPDATE: Still going strong! No changes to my above comments. We've moved houses so it's at a new location but working just as good as ever. ... show more
