    • For Dark Hair - Manage expectations accordingly
I have extremely dark brown hair (not quite black, but almost) with a few grays. I knew that I wouldn't get the super vibrant colors that lighter hair colors can produce, and I am totally okay with that. The amethyst dye basically turned my hair fully black, with pops of purple where the gray absorbed it. In direct sunlight, it looks slightly more purple, but in most dim lighting, it just looks black. Again, I was completely fine with this; it's what I expected. But I wanted to be honest about it so people with dark hair could manage their expectations accordingly. Pros: No horrible smells compared to traditional hair dyes. Conditioning cream does a really nice job deep conditioning. Cons: Kind of a long wait time, which is okay if you have time, but I imagine it could be frustrating if you've got places to go/ people to see. It will stain any and everything -- so wear gloves both when applying and rinsing, use an exfoliating cloth on your back (because when you rinse it in the shower, it will run right down your back and turn it colors), clean your tub/shower ASAP, use a dark hair towel/ one you don't mind getting stained, and make sure you fully dry your hair the first 1-2 times you wash after use or expect your shirt or pillow or whatever to get stained too. ... show more

I gave this product a try because I really liked the idea of a conditioning semi permanent color and loved the shade of purple the brand offered. Even though it did not say it was needed, I ended up applying with heat and I'm amazed at how well the color held over the past couple of months. After the first initial two or three washes, I've had very little color bleed. Looking forward to trying some of their other colors. ... show more

I have lots of gray hair and got tired of salon dye so I tried something fun with my gray hair. My usual brand was out of stock so I tried this brand. I ordered Amethyst and it's the perfect purple color I like. Smells nice and there is no tingling burning at all. My hair color came out nicely and got a lot of compliments. Even though I love the color, I wouldn't buy anymore. It dyes literally everything it touches. I wore a cape and gloves to prevent getting on me but the sink and countertop were not safe. Also, it dyed my shower floor severely. This dye washes off everytime I wash my hair and I have to be really careful not to get on the wall tiles as it will still stain. Too bad… ... show more

    • Better than Pravana Color Vivids
This is a long one but bare with me. I have been dying my hair with Pravana Color Vivids Violet for 4 years now. I bleach my hair every 4 months and would have to color my hair with Pravana every 3-4 weeks to maintain a non faded purple. I wash my hair every 2-3 days given how active I am and use a non spray fry shampoo in-between washes. It was rough, but if you have a bright color you know the struggle. Well in the last year Pravana has gotten harder and harder to find and they’ve changed their formula. I ended up needing to give myself a refresh for a last minute event and couldn’t get any Pravana in in time so I stumbled upon this dye. Reading the reviews I was skeptical but it was the only one I could get in time. I tried it my have been absolutely blown away with the quality! Pros: -The color LASTS!!! 7weeks until I needed a refresh. I’m talking washing every other day and heat styling! And it was still bright and vivid. -The fade out is even. (IYKYK) -The color is vibrant! (Granted it’s not the same hue I’ve been used to with Pravana, but it looks amazing!) Cons: -It does stain in the washout, but no worse then Pravana has for me in the past. And it’s easy to clean off of surfaces with a bit of all purpose cleaner as long as you don’t let it sit too long. But I do recommend wearing gloves during the washout and doing an initial sink rinse before a shower unless you want to be scrubbing your body post color rinse. -You will get purple nails for the first few days until you are a couple washes into the color cycle. -There was a slight color transfer to my pillowcase on the first night. But after a second wash I had no problems. FYIs -It is a more blue based violet. So the fade out leans into a blue fade out. ... show more

I've had purple hair with black roots for 8+ years. I've tried about every purple out there. I prefer cooler purple with even blue hues but not blue hair. This color is great. It leaves your hair feeling very soft. It is a mess like all purple color. If you get it on something, even if you wipe fast, it is going to leave a mark. I have found a white eraser in the cleaning section works well to get it up. This is a cooler purple, but doesn't leave your hair purple-blue, which I love. ... show more
