Whether you’re a beginner in the kitchen or a more seasoned (French) chef like myself, a good set of knives can make cooking at home a whole lot easier. And if you really want to save time and effort, rather than building your knife collection one-by-one like I used to do, you can buy a knife set. The trick, of course, is finding one that’s filled with actually nice, sharp knives. Well search no more. I found it for you right here with this lovely Japanese knife set, which also comes with a handy sturdy cutting board. From blade materials to cost to my personal cooking style, there were tons of factors I’ve considered when selecting a block set. Since I already had a complete set in the kitchen, I wanted something more “light packed” to complement it, along of course with a good cutting board that I could make “disappear” once I was done. So, this set was the perfect choice in that regard. The sturdy wooden block contains 9 pieces, including four steak knives, 1 meat cleaver, a chef knife, bread knife, bone scissor and a knife sharpener. Once all knives are loaded inside their respective slots, the whole thing could be quite heavy to carry around. So, keep this in mind. However, usually once placed somewhere, this isn’t something that get carried around in my opinion. Plus, it’s not something that going to be easily tripped while using it. Which is good. The knife handles are solid and looks also very nice, and also feels smooth in my grip. These also feel well-balanced, and aren’t as heavy as my other set, which make them more comfortable for me to use for a long period of time. These knives are very sharp and look gorgeous. The knife block matches our kitchen and the knives are a sleek addition to our counter. The scissors are my favorite so far since they cut most things like butter. I had one knife with a small knick but customer service responded quickly to an email I sent and will send a replacement. These are relatively decent knives as far as sharpness and ability to hold an edge. The block being a 2 piece unit is not my favorite as I prefer a one piece block. The block appears to be painted which makes it important to take care in putting the knives back in their place. Finally I wish they could go in the dishwasher but we hand wash them instead to avoid rust on the blades. ... show more

    • Handles Discolor When Washed

From a value perspective, this is a nice knife set BUT…the handles discolor when washed by hand or in the dishwasher. The separate smaller block for the steak knives is a nice idea but it moves too freely and easily dislodges from the larger block whenever you touch a steak knife. Also, all of the knives get a little rust spot on them as they sit upside down drying in the dish rack. I would not buy these again, nor do I recommend them. ... show more
