Let me say first that the user interface on the 15" NVR is far superior to the one on the 12" NVR. - It is organized much more sensibly. - The descriptions of functions are usually clear and not cryptic. - Camera and image controls are more intuitive. - The image display is also much better (in addition to being larger). That said, there is one very serious problem with the unit: The hard drive has no cooling of any kind. The HDD is installed in a closed box with no ventilation of any kind. The first hard drive failed, which caused the NVR to constantly reboot and intermittently show that there was no storage (hard drive) installed. The photo shows the result of a quick hard drive test. The SMART status details show that the drive failed due to overheating. I used a miter saw to cut a bunch of ventilation slots in the back cover piece the HDD mounts to. The photo shows the "after" with the slots. The "before" was just solid white with no way for air to circulate. This is especially problematic with a surveillance hard drive because they are working 24/7 recording video nonstop. With no air circulation, the drive just bakes itself to death. Three of the four cameras that came with the system worked great. One of them has a problem as you can see in the photo: vertical stripes. The stripes are on both daylight and nighttime IR vision images. The moral here is to check that all the cameras are good during the 30-day return window. Lastly, the user manual that comes with the system is generic and has little information pertaining to this NVR in particular. A better manual would be a definite plus. In summary: Bad cameras happen in the age of mass production and by itself is not a reason to not recommend this unit. This would be a 5-star product except for the hard drive cooling problem. This is a design issue that only the factory can fix (unless you are willing to make serious modifications and jeopardize warranty status).
