    • Adjustable speed great for beginners and kids!
I bought this Haiboxing 18859A for a 5-year-old as a beginner RC car. And while it's for sure much too fast and capable as a kid's car, it was the only one I could find that allowed variable speed adjustment. And it just works great! You can dial it down to low and it's really easy to control and learn, and steadily turn it up as they feel more confident. The only downside is, that it lacks torque when turned to slow, and will struggle on even low cut grass. But works great on pavement or hard earth/gravel. Besides that, it's also a very capable car for more seasoned pilots, and just a ton of fun. The upgraded parts vs. the non-brushless models (better dampers, metal drivetrain) make it worth the step up to brushless alone. I did follow a different reviewers recommendation and greased all gears with a better quality grease, removing the original grease beforehand. I used automotive grade MoS2 grease, but I'm sure any high quality synthetic grease will do fine in general. The good news is, all gears and differentials came with a decent (but not perfect) filling of grease from the factory, so I'm sure it's not a must-do service measure right out of the box. And honestly it's not a quick one either, as you have to take almost everything apart (took me about 2 hrs, and you need some very fine screw drivers and be careful to be gentle on the plastic threads with metal screws). But on the bright side, this confirmed that it's possible to break it down completely and put it back together. It did feel like all the moving parts turned more easily after, as I was turning them by hand. The controller works great, too. But feels very light and cheap, but what do you expect at this price point? It's responsive, though, and allows for good throttle control with low latency. And I like the control options for steering trim, steering angle and control reversals. So far we've only been running it a few days, so I don't yet know how well it'll hold up in the long run. ... show more

    • Super fun and worth the money
I love how fast this little thing can go and it can take a beating. The same day I got it I took it to the skate park and jumped the thing and took it like a champ no damage at all. I bought the older model a year ago and compared to that model it's so much better. It comes with the upgraded parts and with the full metal gears there will be no chance for them to grind away, like I had with the older model. Super fun and easy to disassemble and I do plan on upgrading a ton more on it. The controller is so much better with more controls to tune the car, the battery life is crazy on this thing I got about 40 minutes of full power fun out of it. For being a 1/18th scale the small size makes it super easy to grt up to speed and to fly super high. If anything does break they offer new and new upgradaed parts on Amazon and their website, shoot them a message they are very helpful. The company really does know what they are doing when it comes to cheap, fun, and fast little cars great for all ages. ... show more

Much better than expected. Superior to RC cars at local big stores. Appreciate two batteries with two charging cables, bearings, metal axle drive shafts, and of course the powerful brushless motor. Controller also shines with features previously not seen in this price range. This truck is fast at full speed settitng and most likely top much for a child. To fix simply turn down max speed on controller. Run by 7 year with ease although box suggests age 14 and up. So far no broken parts after many crashes. Available spare parts like front suspension and steering components would be great but I am not sure if these are sold. Finally its low price is very satisfying. Enjoy with your family. ... show more

My son and I have a few HBX basher trucks and truggies and all have been great. We were trying to source one of these HBX 18859a trucks in the UK but couldn't get one by normal means, so I had to order from Amazon USA! However, it worked and we got our truck in around a week. Fantastic. The truck has basically the same mechanicals and overall design as the 1/16 16889 series, but the scale is smaller at 1/18 and most parts are not interchangeable. Due to time pressures and winter weather, we haven't run the truck that much so far, but it is very lively and shows all the same characteristics as the other HBX trucks we have; fast, durable and fun. Battery life is 20-25 minutes if you sensibly use a low voltage LiPo alarm to avoid draining the battery too much. Due to the size, you can have fun in a modest-sized garden rather than needing lots of space, which bigger RCs demand. Durability comes from very light weight, meaning less energy is carried into any crash, no obvious weak spots in design and use of a plastic that flexes very well to absorb energy. The drivetrain is metal throughout so seems rather bullet proof and reassuringly over-engineered for this size of truck. We don't smash our trucks about too much, but do run them quite a lot and so far, all our HBX trucks have never developed a fault. This truck comes with both pink and green bodies, so you have a choice of looks and a spare body, which is great. The body has been restyled over the older version for a more aggressive and modern look. Tyres are lower profile than the bigger trucks and despite the probably more aggressive acceleration from this tiny one, it seems less liable to flips and rollovers, despite no wheelie bar at the back. I consider wheelie bars as mandatory kit on the 16889 and while it would be nice to have one on the 18859, it isn't perhaps as essential. This would suggest the centre of mass is lower or the overall proportions make for increased stability. The rear suspension sags a bit out of the box, so a few turns of preload on the oil shocks sorted that. The front seems a little over-sprung and over damped, so could benefit from trying a lighter oil in future, but it handles well enough anyway. It is slightly skittish, due to light weight and short wheelbase, but surprisingly stable overall, even when doing a fast run on asphalt, when it pays to change the steering rate to reduce the chance of too harsh an input. The handset has been upgraded over the older model and is now the same as the 16889. These are good handsets, with lots of control, including power settings for inexperienced drivers, steering trim and rate. On open ground we have used these handsets at 100m range without loss of communication. The included charger is ok for a full charge, but cannot do storage charges, which are essential for long term battery safety and long battery life. I would recommend getting a universal charger that you can use to do full or storage charges and set the charge rate....I use 1 amp as it's a 1000MAH battery. This charger can then be used with any other RC batteries you have. Another recommendation would be a cheap LiPo battery alarm and checker. When running the truck you simply clip the battery balance lead into the alarm and it will beep when the battery cells discharge to a preset voltage. I have mine set at 3.4V per cell. If you discharge LiPo battery cells to around 3V they may not recover. Over all this is is an amazing little RC truck for the money and very good for small areas.
