I purchased this as a first scooter along with another one for gf. We tried both of them, and I think I prefer this one! The antitheft features make this one stand out....although do double up with a secondary heavy duty lock. Needing to enter code to use is honestly a fantastic feature tho. I don't have a ton to compare it to, but so far I've just been zipping around New York City. There are definitely faster scooters, but this one is fairly fast. If this would have been a main source of transportation I might look at the higher end models, but for 95% of people that are using this recreationally or scootering to the subway, this is an incredible value. It is really, really fun. It has a solid battery life, seems strong, and get me where I need to go. At this price point I'm super happy. Would definitely recommend anyone looking for a get-around scooter look into this. It feels easy to ride, isn't overly heavy (a lot easier to carry than a bike!) and feels high quality. I recently picked up the GoTrax electric scooter, and I’ve been really happy with it so far. It’s got a great mix of practical features and ease of use that make it perfect for everyday riding. First, the security features are a game-changer. I love that you can add a PIN code to lock it, which gives me peace of mind when I need to leave it outside for a bit. On top of that, the built-in lock is a nice touch, saving me from having to carry a separate lock around. The kickstand is solid and makes parking super easy, and the headlight is bright enough for evening rides—something I really appreciate since I’m often out when the sun’s gone down. As for setup, it couldn’t have been easier. I had it out of the box and ready to go in no time, which was a relief since I’m not the most mechanically inclined person. I’ve been using the Gotrax G4 for about a week now, and so far, I’m really impressed. The ride is incredibly smooth, mainly thanks to the large 10-inch pneumatic tires. They handle bumps and uneven pavement effortlessly, which makes riding it a lot more comfortable than I expected. The battery life is solid. I’ve been getting around 20-25 miles on a full charge, which is perfect for zipping around town or running errands. Charging it hasn’t been a hassle, either—it’s straightforward and quick. What I love most is how easy it is to fold up. In just a few seconds, it collapses neatly, and it’s light enough to lift into the trunk of my car without any issues. tl;dr summary -Great built in security features -Fast acceleration and high max speed -Sturdy frame, great construction (they've made quite a few new models over the years and made improvements upon each iteration) -Sketchy advertising for the battery life -Gotrax's customer service... also sketchy lol -Amazon's customer service resolving my issues... stellar 5/5! scroll for more details to each point **scroll down even FURTHER by the bottom for review updates after owning this for a while (5/8/22 & 8/7/22) Background: I've owned Gotrax's XR Elite since Aug 2020 buying directly from Gotrax. 18 mi advertised range with a 15.5 mph max speed. Owning that scooter was a great experience and indispensable in getting around my city without dealing with traffic and parking. Not to mention it's probably better for the environment overall too. When my front tire got a flat on a ride home from the coffee shop about a month ago and Gotrax's website was (and probably still is) completely out of replacement tires and tubes, I decided it was time to look into the possibility of upgrading from the XR Elite. My car was also being worked on at the same time so I desperately needed another way to get groceries anyway. Detailed review: Speed/acceleration- 20 mph max speed is FAST for urban areas. The XR Elite tops out at 15.5 and so the GMAX is about 30% faster at max. It makes a huge difference when you want to speed through sections that aren't so busy with cars or when you want to get past bicyclists in the bike lane. The acceleration is very fast compared to the XR Elite as well. I didn't use a stopwatch to get technical about the comparison, but as they teach you in physics when driving a car, the human body is a very good accelerometer in general and we all know when something is fast or slow while riding. Again, the GMAX is FAST! You get buttons that allow you to "switch gears" between being at 15.5 mph max and 20 max. Security- There are 2 security features that are fantastic for deterring scooter thieves. The digital lock keeps the scooter from being turned on fully. The wheels will resist rotation when the console is turned on and digital security code has not yet been input. The console will also tell the scooter to flash a bunch of lights and make a constant beeping noise while it's being moved unauthorized. The built-in physical wire lock (typical to a bike or for a snowboard) very easily wraps around a bar on a bike rack and requires a 4 digit code. I'm not sure there is any other scooter on the market that has this great combination of security, so this is a pretty big plus. Construction/design- The XR Elite was very reliable riding it over the last year, sometimes through the rain and a little bit of snow (they don't recommend this in their manuals, btw). But their scooters are always water/dust resistant to an extent, so I wasn't too worried as long as I wasn't in a rainstorm or a blizzard lol. The 10" air filled wheels are a big welcome upgrade over the 8.5" ones on the XR Elite. The folding mechanism is an improved redesign over the XR Elite too. The only thing I'm going to be cautious about is the fender. My XR Elite's fender is semi-cracked between the part that screws onto the back of the scooter and where it begins its curve to shade the rear wheel. I didn't notice until someone pointed out to me that it sounded loose when I was riding (it made a more shaky noise than normal) and I think it might have cracked from a little bit of rough handling when the scooter was folded. Gotrax's scooters clip onto the fender when folded, so it pays to be careful when wheeling it around when folded or when lifting the unit around by the tiller or handlebars. The cracks have been getting bigger riding over time, and so I'm still looking for a new fender (and of course the replacement part is still sold out on Gotrax's website lol). With some of these newer models, the scooter would have a taillight and so having a healthy fender is crucial. Fortunately, the fender on the GMAX looks to be quite thick. Learning from past experience, I will only handle the scooter when it's unfolded from here on out. Battery life- **I'm not so sure about this one...** When I was comparing specs across different brands and trying to stay under $1000, it became obvious that the GMAX was developed to compete with Segway's OG Ninebot Max, which sports a similar max speed and battery life. However, if you go on the Ninebot Max's Amazon page and look at the most helpful/relevant reviews, one of the top reviews states that Segway was probably misleading with their 40 mi battery life advertisement. When I saw that, I thought, well... Gotrax is sporting that the GMAX has a 45 mi range, and I know the XR Elite was fairly reliable over the last year, so I'll give it a shot. Boy, am I a bit disappointed in this area. I made sure I charged it fully overnight. My first ride was about 5 miles or so with not much extra weight. FYI, I weigh about 170-175 lbs (depending on the time of the day lol). The first 2 miles of the 5 were fairly flat, but the remaining 3 I took a different route to get home with some steep hills here and there... one whole bar of the 4-bar battery life was gone. I thought, okay, let's ride this out without charging it to see what happens. For the remaining charge in the battery, I rode across the city in multiple trips on mostly flat land changing gears from time to time. The rest of the battery only lasted about another 17 miles for a grand total of 21.8 miles. And now the final bar is flashing and my max speed is capped around 10-12 mph with very slow acceleration to preserve whatever battery it has left. For maybe 2 of those final 17 miles, I was carrying quite a bit of groceries and it could've added no more than an extra 10-15 lbs. But I'm still well below the 220 lbs limit on the scooter, at least. And they really shouldn't advertise a 45 mi range if someone who is 200 lbs is only going to get like 15-20 miles out of the scooter. It makes me wonder what their test conditions were like in order to get 45 miles. They should at least run more experiments and do more testing to give the consumer more details on what kind of mileage they'd get under different conditions (rider weight, mileage under constant 15 degree incline, etc). Of course, if they released this information, it wouldn't be marketed openly and it would be in some fine print specs somewhere, but at least it would be nice to know. I'm also not sure why they just decrease the performance of the scooter at low battery rather than let a user run it out normally until it has like 3% left. I'd much rather have the latter to maximize scooter usage. Gotrax customer service- The company could be running lean due to the pandemic, but I have to say their customer service is a bit spotty from the times I've been in contact with them. My XR Elite had greatly decreased range from the advertised 18 miles after a month or two, resulting in only being able to ride for about 10 miles or so. I waited a little too long to contact them about this issue and only reached maybe 4-5 months later after trying to test the battery life under different conditions. When I messaged them asking about exchanges/repairs last year, I got conflicting messages resulting throughout a week of going back and forth with different agents only finally resulting in someone saying my scooter was out of warranty and they could do nothing about it. I was very disappointed and felt like they just wanted to sell people units and wipe their own hands clean of the customers. This year, they've been kind of responsive (mainly when I inquired about sales of replacement parts and the GMAX Ultra itself lol), but when I said my brake on my XR Elite seemed like it had issues, I got no response at all. Amazon's customer service- I would have said nothing here if I simply just received the scooter and there were no issues shipping wise. The GMAX Ultra was sold out everywhere I looked when my XR Elite had its flat tire. So I waited weeks after inquiring with Gotrax to see when the GMAX would come back into stock. A few weeks later (2 weeks ago from writing this review), Amazon had them back in stock and I noticed I could buy one on a 5-mo interest free payment plan with a 10% discount off the list price. I was sold and jumped on it right away. To my initial disappointment, a recently used UPS tracking number was used and tracking was glitched. The package was never shown to be received by UPS. After going back and forth with UPS's and Amazon's customer service, each agent said there was an issue on the other company's end (of course, lol). A week passes, and days after the expected delivery date, the package was automatically declared to be lost by Amazon's order page. Amazon's CS representative refunded me after I saw the scooter was no longer in stock and I was massively disappointed that I would have to continue using my bike to get groceries. About 3 days later after the refund, I got a text from UPS saying a package would be delivered the next morning. I thought, could it be!?!? When I looked up the tracking number, it was the scooter shipment and the tracking details finally updated! So the scooter arrived, and I said... does this mean I get a free scooter? Well, the story gets more dramatic. Plot twist: yesterday morning I got an automated email from Amazon saying that the scooter had arrived a few days prior and since I got refunded my first monthly payment of 5 installments, I would need to send the scooter back or my card would be automatically charged for the full amount of the scooter ($765ish with tax included). Kinda sucks, but it's fair, right? I had already ridden on it for 2 days and wanted to keep it, of course. So I called customer service, explained my situation, and asked that my payment installment plan be reinstated. The CS agent put me on hold for a bit and returned to tell me that since all the tracking issues and late arrival were faults on their end, I could just keep the scooter and she deactivated the automatic trigger to charge my card if the scooter wasn't returned by next month. She even sent me an email confirming this conversation and had her name in the email in case anything else would happen in the future that was not according to the conversation. For all the headaches I went through dealing with the different customer service lines, this was an awesome end to it all and in a way I felt like I won the lottery lol. Amazon's customer service: an absolute 5/5. In conclusion- If you've read this far, you're probably at the point where you're asking what the verdict is on whether you should buy this scooter. Of course, getting a free high end scooter from Amazon sounds nice but it may not happen to everyone (and I wasn't expecting it to happen to me). And because I believe nothing truly comes for free, there's always a balance in the give and take of the universe, and we all have to give back in some way, shape, or form, I decided to pay it forward somehow by writing this long, detailed, very honest review to inform prospective scooter riders of what they're getting into. Is the GMAX Ultra worth its $800 list price tag? I'm not entirely sure. As of the day this review, the GMAX has been restocked on Gotrax's website and other various online retailers for 10% off at the price of $720+tax with free shipping. If you can get it with more discounts and combine in discount codes from sponsored youtube review videos to get it down to maybe $650ish, I'd say it's a good deal. The G4 has a retail of $600, sporting the same max speed but half the advertised range (the actual range I got on the GMAX though lol). The very reliable XR Elite sits around $400 with discounts from time to time. I was lucky to get it at $350 last year, and that seems to be a very good price for its specs right now if you can live with a 15.5 mph max speed and 18 mi advertised range. Getting into the $700-800 range for any scooter, I MIGHT have preferred to try out the Ninebot Max with its rear wheel suspension to see if the ride quality is any better, but the 10" pneumatic wheels on the GMAX are already a big improvement over the 8.5" wheels I used to ride on. You also have to keep in mind Gotrax's support may be limited at this time. If my scooter had ended up lost, I actually was considering buying directly from Gotrax and adding in the Mulberry hassle-free protection plans since I didn't want to deal with customer service wait times. My GMAX is getting a first full battery charge from almost being depleted as we speak and if I notice anything different with the mileage from a full charge, this review will be updated. **EDIT 5/8/2022, important precaution for any rider: My odometer shows that I've ridden the scooter for 575 miles already. Performance is still pretty solid and not much changes from my review last September. I thought my battery life/performance was degrading since I was seemingly getting less mileage out of it over the last month, but I found out it was due to underinflated tires. The reason I had underinflated tires was that I had to replace my rear tire tube three times over, each time not quite inflating it to the recommended PSI. The original tube busted on the inside due to what looked like some sort of cut or wearing down by something. I know this happened on a day right after I rode through a rainstorm for a few miles hoping to beat the rain. I had never ridden it through any kind of extreme weather before and it's good that it survived through the storm, but I have a feeling something with water building up on the insides caused the tube to bust the following day. So, Gotrax's website didn't have replacement tubes in stock and I purchased some 10x2 tubes on Amazon which turned out to be 10x2.125. Because they were slightly oversized, on two separate occasions in the last 3 months, the tube would rub up against inside of tire itself, outer side of the tube would gradually wear out and eventually have very small openings (like VERY) that let air out, causing a flat. I finally got an official 10x2 tube from Gotrax last week and I will save it as another backup. Thankfully changing tires on this model is quite straightforward compared to previous models. Lesson of the day: always make sure your tires are inflated to the recommended PSI to get the most out of your scooter and use the tire tubes that fit your tires EXACTLY. I am also considering air-less honeycomb tires in the near future. Will update again when I switch over and try it out for a while. **EDIT 8/7/2022 update: About 5 weeks ago I managed to snag new 10" third party tires off Amazon (spotted on here for the first time) that are compatible with the GMAX and it has been smooth sailing, putting another 200 mi on the scooter with no issues! Battery life is still great, getting around 20-25mi for a full charge as I was when I first received purchased the scooter. What I have to say about Gotrax though is that I am unfortunately even more disappointed in their customer service and shipping/warehouse issues than ever before. Let me start with the tire tube issue I had. I've replaced that rear tire a good 5-6 times and have gotten REALLY GOOD at changing tires/tubes. A couple flats were my fault for having the tube barely caught in between the metal plates comprising the wheel itself and therefore, in time, after some few riding sessions, the tube would bust open with a small hole leaking air. However, after finally getting new tires, I noticed the new tires were very clean on the inside as you run your fingers along them; it felt very rubbery with no debris or anything that could damage your tubes. It turned out that my old rear tire had exposed threads on the inside somehow, that's what wore down my tubes every time I changed them like almost every 1-2 weeks. When I phoned customer service, the guy seemed very genuine but had no idea what I was talking about or even that this was a possibility, except that I could just buy a whole new motor with the tire/tube assembly put on already. So given that it was summer and I was very much inclined to get my scooter fully functional again, a month later I eventually placed an order for a new motor assembly and front wheel assembly to be done with this issue once and for all. Weeks passed and though the shipping label has been created, there was no sign of the shipment from their warehouse. I called them a week after placing the order and their customer service said they would look into it. Another week went by and I decided to try e-mail support. I would get this agent who could barely speak English and wouldn't really make too much sense half the time. I mean, Amazon's customer service is composed of overseas non-native English speakers as well, but at least they do well enough to resolve customer issues. I ended up conversing back and forth with this person for 3-4 weeks. Eventually I requested to just cancel the order and they said it was canceled. A week later, after inquiring two times about when my refund would be processed, the order actually goes out. I argued with this same customer service person because they said it was canceled, but they said I can just refuse delivery on the package and I'll get a refund. When I called UPS to tell them my situation and just re-route the package back to the warehouse while it's being transported, they said I wasn't authorized to do it because the sender would have to do so (as it would come out of the sender's pocket). I didn't want to wait until the package was here because I've heard refusing delivery usually gets charged on the buyer. In the end I just decided to keep the package. It's great that I got my parts but I wouldn't have spent that $125 if I had known I wasn't getting the parts within a week and I would have searched elsewhere earlier for parts just to be able to ride the thing since it's the summer. It's one thing to hold up someone's money, but it's another to deny the use of their product without being truly transparent in regards to shipping delays. It's lost time that a customer will never get back in their entire life (sales/business 101 = lost opportunity cost). So with all this being said, I've owned the GMAX Ultra for almost a year now. It's a great and solid product all-around. But I really can't recommend buying from Gotrax given the part replacement issues I've had. It's not even a one-off issue either; I've placed maybe 8-10 orders directly from their website since 2020 and I'm pretty sure 50% of them have had very similar issues, among these delayed orders being the first accessory order I placed for a scooter bag back in summer 2020 for my XR Elite. It's as if they've always only had 1-2 people working in their warehouse and they get swamped with orders or something. In my city back in 2020, I'd like to say I was one of the first people in town riding on an e-scooter everywhere but by the spring of this year, I've noticed PLENTY of Gotrax scooters on the streets along with other brands. So unless they're being really silly and selling these for a loss, there really should be no excuse for these customer service/shipping issues. Upper management probably needs some hard life lessons in business. They've had 2 years to figure this out already! If you plan on fronting funds to buy replacement parts ahead of time (say... 6 months to a year in advance? lol), then you might be good. But I would otherwise probably shop for another reliable brand. I see people riding on so many cool designs from other brands like Hiboy, Segway, Turboant, Apollo... My rating remains at 4/5, but really it should be almost be 3/5 or 3.5/5 because of all the headaches from customer service and shipping issues. ... show more

I have owned 350w motor electric scooters, but this 500w motor is totally a different beast, accelerate much faster and smoother. So far I am pretty happy with its performance. It is still quite portable, although it has more battery capacity which will drive it around 20 miles, I can easily move it in and out of my camper van. Another thing I love is the bigger size tiers since I use it on the trial, the bigger tires is more stable and give me confidence to run in the wild. Overall I think it is a great product at this price, may buy another one for kids also as birthday gift. ... show more
