Let me preface this by saying it is serving the need I installed it for. By no means is this an actual baby gate or trustworthy for top/bottom of stairs. I use it to lock out muddy dogs that respect it and aren't destructive. The kids on the other hand are destructive and can open it, crawl under it, and use it as a slingshot. Have had it installed for about two months and it is holding up to the wear and tear, so A+ there. One negative is that if you let go of it before it is fully retracted, it will snap back to the wall with such force that it has put some big gouges in the sheetrock. I installed this gate at the top of a stairway to keep a grandchild/toddler from falling down stairs. Provided great peace-of-mind. Very easy to open and close. Locking mechanism is sufficient for pets and very small children, but I think 4 and 5 year olds can quickly learn to unlock it. When retracted, it is very unobtrusive, and a good solution to small areas where a swinging gate won't work. I also liked the fact that with this style gate there is no bar across the bottom of the opening that could trip someone as they started down the stairs. It is easily removed from mounts for long-term storage. Gave it a 4 star rating because of the mounting hardware supplied with it. Screws provided are only 1" long, and will securely install mounts only if they are screwed directly into solid wood surfaces. I've never used the kind of anchors provided for attaching mounts to drywall, and they seemed to be flimsy at best. If securing the mounts to drywall, I would have used toggle bolts for a more secure attachment. Fortunately, there was a stud behind the drywall where the mounts were being installed, and I was able to use longer screws which securely attached the mounts to the stud. I used 2 1/2" screws because I had to also install a 3/4" spacer (which was not provided and I had to make) behind each of these mounts so that the gate would clear the baseboard. It’s a pet gate but I use it for my toddler and the stairs. I have an area that was too wide for a baby gate and this works perfectly. Easy to install and I love that for me. Only issue is my dogs crawl under it but my son can’t get to the stairs so it’s a win.

I loved this baby gate for the 6 months I’ve had it, but today my toddler leaned against it while it was locked, and the one hook cracked and fell to the floor. The mesh gate flew off the broken hook and almost hit her. I don’t even know if they sell new hooks, I can’t find any hardware listings.     • Not good to use for large dogs

So I thought this would be a great alternative to the wooden baby gates you get from Walmart. We have a walking toddler getting into everything and a puppy that needed potty training. I loved the ease of install, how minimal it is and how easy it is to use, but it is not meant for large breed dogs that can jump and get their paws up on the top. Due to her weight and just being able to reach the top, our dog managed to break both mounting brackets and now the gate is useless. Now if you have small dogs, just trying to keep kids out of a certain area, it’s great! But don’t recommended if you have a larger breed dog that could possibly jump and reach the top. This is an amazingly well engineered product. We needed a gate to provide puppy control, keeping her from going upstairs. The mesh prevents her from climbing when compared to our old baby gate. And it looks great too! Search for retractable mesh gate parts. The mounting hardware allows the gate to be removed easily yet it is solidly anchored as well. Adding the racket lock prevents the pup from pushing the mesh gate in and up…just very well thought out. ... show more
