  • I have Henckels and Shun knives at easily twice the price and these are as good or better
Great balance and good sharpness. You will not be disappointed. Great knife set and can’t beat the price. I have had this set of knives for a few years and only hone them on occasion and they are as sharp as when I bought them. My Shun knives have chipped a few times and my Henckels have dulled quickly. You can’t go wrong with this set of knives as they are well made and there is a knife for pretty every thing you will need. ... show more

  • Finally a kitchen knife set worthy of a knife snobs kitchen counter
My set of JA Henckels knives have served me well for about 6 years but they are starting to require more frequent sharpening now. I’ve wanted to upgrade to a higher quality set of knives for a while. I ran across the Cangshan S1 series 17 piece block set at Costco for $200. It looked pretty nice but I never heard of Cangshan so I did some research on Google. Just about everything I found on Cangshan was overwhelmingly positive except for a few complaints about quality not being up to expectations. Amazon reviews for Cangshan were almost all 5 stars. Apparently, the type of steel they used in S1 sets has a reputation for not holding an edge for long so I skipped that set. I noted the price on most of the other Cangshan sets was higher than average so I figured they would be about the quality I was looking for. Most of the videos I found were by chefs or industry professionals and all of them spoke highly on the quality of Cangshan knives. When I saw that Cangshan made some sets like the TS and TC series in Swedish Sandvik steel my interest was peaked again. I have some high end $100-$300 outdoors knives like Bark River, Enzo, Mora and some other custom makers, so I know a little about Sandvik Steel, VG10, CPM3v, D2 etc. but I never heard of any kitchen knives made in Sandvik. Another thing that caught my attention was $100 off coupon on Amazon bringing the set down to $330. Everywhere else I looked this set is $600 and up, even Walmart, so I felt like $330 was an exceptional deal that I was lucky to find. After reading lots of reviews and watching all the YouTube videos I could find, I pulled the trigger and order the 17 Piece TS Walnut block set. Glad I did because the $100 coupon deal was gone the next day. Once the set arrived I was very pleased with the packaging, very prestigious. It makes you feel like you are opening something expensive. It was like a barrel of monkeys, box inside box, inside box, inside box. There were about 8 boxes inside the big box and everything was nicely packed with careful attention to detail. Everything was beautiful and in pristine condition, no complaints about quality here. These knives are such a joy to use, there is such a noticeable difference in how effortlessly the blades of this set slice through food compared to my German set. Slicing an onion is like slicing warm butter. I can tell by the look and feel and by how well they work, that with the proper care these knives will last a very long time. I was so impressed I went to the Cangshan website and ordered the TC 3 piece block set with a Chefs Knife and 3.5” Paring knife, (I like to have options) I also got a 5-inch straight edge utility knife and a TC Fillet Knife, all on sale. Some of the prices on the Cangshan website were even better than on Amazon. I now have about $1,000 worth of quality knives but I really only spent about $540 because of the sales. I heard Cangshan is a new company trying to get their name out there so they are willing to offer sales to get their knives out there. This is by far the best set of kitchen knives I’ve ever had. Coming from someone who has a large collection of high-end outdoor knives, this is high praise. I finally have a set kitchen set of knives that are worthy of a knife snob. ... show more

  • *Review is on the PACKAGING and PRESENTATION ONLY
*This review is on the packaging ONLY. As this is a Christmas gift I cannot attest to anything other than the packaging and presentation. As I was combing through reviews I didn't run across any photos or written reviews containing these things so I hope this helps. Here's what your looking at from left to right: White box (This box was INSIDE a shipping box). The inner box (This photo is of one of the inner boxe's sides. It shows each knife/tool it contains along with a quick blurb about Cangshan). Knives/Tools 3 Boxes (These 3 boxes contain all the knives and tools. They are individually wrapped in this manner: Each handle is wrapped in tissue paper. Each blade is covered by a hard protective tip. Each knife/tool is inside its own slim baggie. Over the baggie, covering the blade ONLY is a protective, white, cardboard sheath). Wood block (Alongside the three boxes with the knives and tools there is a separate white box (not pictured) containing the wooden knife block, which is wrapped in shrink wrap and contains a small brochure of some sort. I did not take the shrink wrap off so I don't know what is inside the brochure. Summary: The entire package was safe and secure within the shipping box. As far as the product box, it is glossy, high quality cardboard. The inner box is black and contrasts nicely with the solid white outer box, and the fact that there are essentially 2 product boxes goes a long way in making it look and feel like a high-end knife set, which, while very nice and by no means a low-end set... it is technically NOT high-end when compared to other sets cresting the $1,000 mark and higher... and definitely not in the same league as the true top-end individually pieced-together sets that our out there. Over all however, it's a handsome presentation and I have no worries about gifting this. There are pieces of cardboard in various parts when you open the inner (black) box. These are folded in triangular arrangements for the purpose of being spacers and providing an added level of shock protection. Nothing shifts or rattles at all. I hope this helps! ... show more
