  • An improved TVP ID amp series
These are essentially a reissue of Blackstar's older TVP ID series amps. If you are familiar with those amps, you know these. Really the same family members, but they are in fact improved over the older series amp. I've had and been a fan of an ID60 head for many years. And had the opportunity to A/B it side by side with the newer Silverline 100 head. Same form factor, same controls and layout. Same Insider software and all operational aspects are definitely as with the older ID TVPs. Compatibility with the same foot switch. Voicing, tone shaping and effects sound and adjust are much as the original amps. Feels the same. What is different? Well - the Silverline in general sounds a bit richer from cleans and as the gain lands you in light blues territory. In the clean voicings you won't notice much difference. Take on crunch through especially the OD voicings at higher gains it becomes apparent. The older IDs are not as rich and more importantly artifact. And the worse aspect of that artifacting is that it wasn't consistent in doing it. Which made the playability and experience pretty negative for me at higher gain settings of crunch and above settings. The new Silverlines no longer artifact. And will also go into higher gain - impressively high gain - territory. The touch is impressive - and consistent - now. I wouldn't say it feels like a tube amp. That's subjective and YMMV. I simply find it usable now and like it. I would say that although the tone shaping controls are unmistakably the same, the Silverline seems a bit more pronounced in range and quality. Also I've heard that Blackstar did a lot of retooling of their noise gates for these amps. That was a sore point in the old ID series and I saw 2 noise gate options in the Insider software instead of 1 for the older IDs. Can't comment on them as I always leave the noise gates disabled. Still has the effects loop that you need Insider to enable. That I like and use. I have to say I love the Silverlines/ID amps for their excellent tweaking interface. The ISF and output tubes are simple - and fun - to use. 12 very easy to use presets are about the right amount. You don't run out, yet not overwhelmed with too many complex controls. The cleans and the range of are magnificent. All of that are the same between these old and new versions. If you live in the clean spectrum of sounds, the older IDs maybe the better bargain for you. The middle crunch is still a little weak even in the Silverlines, but definitely better. Again I find usable and like with the Silverline. High gain is no contest. The Silverlines do that better. I think a lot of the nice improvements that Blackstar did for these amps - both the level of gain and noise gate control - was for the audience of metal types. If you want higher gain sounds, the Silverline will probably be worth it to you. Final considerations are that I think that Blackstar has likely applied what they learned from the ID series. Problems like manufacturing issues. Firmware issues. An example of the latter was the high number of ID amps that were bricking during amp firmware updates or power bouncing. Think it likely that Blackstar would fix those. Also likely with the Silverlines is a substantial upgrade in the electronics. They are definitely touting their new SHARC DSP technology. I do think it was important in the quality sound improvement. And likely play a key role in future firmware upgrades of this amp. Another key aspect that sold me on this amp. The IDs were improved over time with firmware upgrades and hoping for the same with the Silverlines. Finally - not too important to me - but yes. These amps are pretty. Moreso in person. Sitting next to an older ID60 head, the Silverline just made it look fugly... Addendum 3/31/2020: Feel a bit of a need to explain what is and isn't about these Silverline amps (in my opinion) in light of a seeming negative overall reception. First I will express some disappointment at this point that Blackstar did not do more than a sightly better cover up of their previous TVP ID series. With the steamroller Boss Katana amps splash into the market, I was hoping that Blackstar, and other major players, would answer the call and up the ante on their new products. Doesn't seem like this has happened. It is my #1 complaint of these amps, because as of this post date, there still has been no major upgrade to the firmware of these amps. Mind you this could still happen. Likely will happen at some point. I'd like to think the Silverline platform has plenty of underneath resources to allow this to happen. Let's hope that Blackstar is listening to the customer feedback and this will change... Another big concern is the range of crunch voicings on the Silverlines. It's not these the amps perform poorly. It's the way they perform it. It is actually implemented excellently, and it is in this area that the Silverlines improve the most on the TVP ID series. It's just that it is quite different. Definitely not a traditional blues tube amp crunch many revere. You can get used to it, maybe learn to like it and find a place for it perhaps in your quest for tones on this amp. But it is initially disconcertingly different. I think people are most polarized on their love/hate of the Silverlines for these type sounds... Cleans are *just* *magnificent*. Across the spectrum. Not too much improvement on the TVP ID series here. I think most people who love their TVP IDs will agree that the cleans they can get with it is a large reason they love it. Yes - the Silverline is only subtlety improved here. Partly the sound and partly extra tweakability (ISF is quite a bit better, but other areas too). If you love cleans - this amp is a *great* buy... Melt your face high gain. Yes - the Silverline does that very well, and is the other area I think Blackstar focused on improving this amp over the TVP IDs. Searing is a good word for it. I don't live in this realm much so not speaking as any kind of authority on it, but it seems if you want to approach metal with your sound, you can consider this amp a worthy option... I like this amp a lot and play it a lot. I have several amps. And play it even more than I played the TVP ID 60 head before it. Just a great amp for the tone chaser who loves to tweak. Easy coarse to fine tweaking is implemented superbly in this amp. And I find that I use various effects much more than I did with the older TVP ID. Other amps certainly niche out this amp for certain sounds. But no other amp matches the range. Particularly the wide range of cleans. A huge point of this amp is a versatility that fun it is to operate and adjust on top of hearing a high quality sound. Really can't stress how important that has become to me... ... show more

  • Totally not ready for release
Looked great on paper and I really wanted to free up some floor room and replace my Headrush Pedalboard. But this thing is nowhere near ready for even casual home play. I had everything hooked up with an ABC switch and going into the same cab or with emulated cab, into the same mixer then into the same headphones or studio monitor. Also compared to a tube amp for reference. The Headrush and the tube amp were comparable, but the Silverline sounds like a toy. It's a bit like playing an 8-bit audio file or playing through a laptop speaker, where a whole bunch of frequencies are just missing. There are differences between the pre-amp settings and the power amp tube emulations, but all output are generally confined to a narrow band of frequencies. It also takes pedals horribly. If you push the frontend any with any high gain pedals, the amp will just give up trying to process and fail with the most digital sounding artifacts whereas the Headrush Pedalboard will obviously give a distorted sound but it's the intended distortion that sounds like the tube amp. I really want to like it. I'm really tired with my Headrush (whose crappy firmware updates keep bricking it) and the looks and the build aesthetics of the Silverline is great. But it feels like they're not even trying or even tested it once. Reminds me of the Marshall Code line. ... show more

  • Speaker dependent
I like this head. There are frequencies missing though compared to a tube amp for sure. If you play a high gain tube amp next to this....this will get buried. However...play this through a real cab with V30's and it starts to shine a little more. No modeling amp should be THIS dependent on speakers, but overall I like it enough to keep for now. ... show more

  • I don't understand the bad reviews
I have owned one of these for the better part of year, it is NOT a modeling amp with all sorts of pedal effects built in, but it offers a wide spectrum of possibilities. Compare on the YooToob, check out some reviews on the SweetWater site. I am a working guitarist and gig with this... I have no complaints ... show more

  • Thin sound with artificial tone.
I play classic hard rock and metal and the Silverline deluxe doesn't. It didnt sound realistic to me and has a thin tone with no real bottom end. Played three guitars thru this head and it didn't like any of them. Returned it and purchased an Randall RG that I actually love.

  • This amp rocks!
Saw the low reviews and had to add my thoughts. This amp gets a great variety of tones, and can be made to sound almost exactly like a tube amp. I play in a cover band with a wide variety of music and this amp can cover them all, with some great tones to experiment with while recording. Highly recommend. The cabinet sounds great as well. ... show more
