Top Amazon Reviews

  • Maybe my expectations were too high
This review is for the single speaker combo amp, not the stereo version. This single speaker is by far the most portable version, which is what attracted me to it. After reading all the great reviews on this tiny little amp, I thought I would give it a try as something I could imagine making space for when I travel. It just did not deliver remotely enough or high enough quality sound for it to be worthwhile. The short take: - Volume: barely enough to be heard in a quiet room without jacking gain above 50% and volume to 100%. - Sound quality: Meh. Pretty much all notes below C (A string) or so have noticeable distortion even with gain near minimum. - Tone controls: I could find nothing I liked about the tone controls. A simple bass-mid-treble would have been better. - Headphone out: Okay, so it is actually a decent headphone amp, but awfully bulky compared to the alternatives for that. - Portability: Great. If it sounded okay. This is one of those reminders that you really can’t suspend the laws of physics. A single 3” speaker without a port or passive radiator (like most BT speakers in this price range have) is just not going to produce much low-frequency output. Connected to a 3w power section that was clearly taxed by any signal with actual bass frequencies in it, this thing was simply unsatisfying to play with. I think I isolated the issues I had to the power section, since the output through the headphone out was actually clean and pretty decent (as long as I kept all the tone controls flat). But through the speaker, even with the gain all the way down and all other tone controls flat, any note from about the bottom few notes on the A string on down had noticeable hair and a distinct blatting with each pluck. I am not an ape on the strings, ether. Through headphones the same settings were clean, so it seems to be an issue with the amp/speaker. To hear it at these settings required the output volume to be set at full, and still I had to put it up to my ear to really hear it (in a quiet room!) Raising the gain, or messing with the various compression and tone controls just mucked up the sound to my ear. It was possible to get it loud enough to actually hear, but the low notes were just messy. Tried different sets of batteries, and two different basses with the full range of volume and tone pot settings - same basic results. Final thought. I really wanted this to work. I’ve been traveling a lot and wanted to have something I could carry around that didn’t always necessitate headphones. The reviews were so great, I thought I would try it out. It was so disappointing that I could not ship it back fast enough. Maybe I got a bum unit. ... show more

  • Best small battery amp in my opinion
I've tried a number of small battery powered amps, to include the Danelectro Sweet Honey, Fender Mini Twin, Orange Micro crush, Roland Micro Cube, among a couple others I can't recall. The Danelectro and Fender amps just sound horrible if you turn them up past whisper volume. I found the Micro Crush and Micro Cube to be way too loud given their intended use. I wanted a amp I could play quietly, not at whisper volumes, but quiet enough so as not to disturb other house occupants. Blackstar nailed it here! For being a little plastic battery powered amp, this little guy can produce awesome tone, clean or overdriven, at my target volumes! Truthfully, I think this amp is an excellent investment to literally guitarists at all skill levels. Experienced players would at the very least find this amp's tones satisfying, and it's extremely portable. Beginners would be able to start with an amp that can be played at reasonable volumes, isn't too simple or too complex to experiment with dialing in tones, and sorry if I sound arrogant, but I think this amp sounds leagues better than any of the amps you see packaged in electric guitar starter sets. This amp sounds so good, a fellow guitarist actually mistook this amp's tones for my Blackstar HT5-R's tones once! I'm sure he went and bought one too! ... show more

  • Pretty remarkable considering it’s size!
When you think about the contradiction of “small” and “Bass amp,” it is difficult to not give this a 5 star rating. I thinks it’s pretty remarkable that Blackstar was able to get a 3” bass speaker to sound anywhere near this good. People who are not giving this a good rating clearly don’t have a very good understanding of physics! There is a reason you can’t find much of a selection of small, portable, battery powered bass amps. And as far as sound level, yes it’s loud enough to hang in with a group of acoustic players. That’s what I use it for specifically. ... show more

  • Surprisingly love this thing
Surprisingly love this thing. Before this I would have to lug my Fender Rumbler and carry my Fender P-Bass and neither are that light or small. Now with this thing I just toss it in my backpack that holds my music and stuff and grab my travel gig bag and go to my weekly jam sessions. Everyone one else in the band is using acoustics and even if they were using electric this thing can still hold it's own. Granted they made fun of it when I pulled it out for the first time, but after hearing the sound they no longer made fun of it. ... show more

  • Does the job, not the best tone.
This is going to do the job I needed it to do just fine. I wanted a small battery operated amp to use with a ukulele bass around the campfire for jam sessions. I wanted just enough volume to be heard at an equivalent to my acoustic bass guitar (unplugged). I haven't evaluated battery life yet, since I'm still on the cheap batteries provided. I only have an hour or so on the unit, and it is showing no signs of weak battery. I would have liked a greater range of tone control. With the smaller speaker, it is hard to get a 'warm' tone out of it. I did find I was happier when I was able to place the amp on a cabinet or plastic tub to resonate better. Mine was a "b" stock (previously opened) unit, and I got a super deal (not to be confused with one of the 'freebie' reviews). In retrospect I would gladly pay the street price for a new one and be happy. You won't play any gigs with this, but it is a great small package for practice. Things I wish it had: 1. A carry bag to protect it (and store and extra set of batteries). 2. An "auto shut-off" feature that would shut it off after about 5 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery. It is very easy to leave it on. 3. A tone setting that would allow a smoother (less clean and crisp) tone. ... show more
