    • Great Player for Cassettes
Cassettes from more than 40 years ago sound great on this deck, which also records.

    • When it works it's great but when it doesn't not so much
When the Teac actually plays a tape correctly it can sound pretty good. However, there was a noticeable difference in speed and wow and flutter between the two players on the deck. I might have been willing to put up with some of it's faults if it hadn't ate up several of my tapes, and ruined them. I think putting better belts on the unit could improve the performance but I opted to save my money and bought a 2nd hand Pioneer deck, which plays great btw and has not ate up and ruined a single tape yet. I think Teac has some work to do. They need to go back and look at what made their decks so good in the 90s. However, I will say the noise reduction works very well and I thought it was as good as Dolby at reducing noise. I also think mechanical response was good but I could not get it to turn off when it ate a tape without unplugging the unit. The deck is way too pricey to be this glitchy in my opinion. I heard a rumor that some higher end decks are coming out and I might splurge and try one but we'll see. One final note is to say that my negative review is only about the Teac itself. The distributor, Listen Up, was great to deal with. They shipped promptly and just as promptly refunded my money when they received the unit back. I would definitely do business with them again should the need arise. ... show more

    • Works good for Digitizing
Mostly bought this for digitizing music from cassettes, and 45s via tape. So far I have only just started with a cassette, but it is working fine. I have music on tape from bands I have played in, so this will help keep it for my grandchildren.

    • Today's best stereo cassette unit.
I've been an audiophile for 50 years. Waaaay back then you could get a really decent cassette deck if you wanted one. Today.....not so much. Try your Wal-Mart. Betcha it won't have anything for cassette. This is a great dual deck stereo cassette. Both sides record. Dubbing is simple. You can make dual recordings from line in or microphone. You can mix mic and line in and record it. Manual volume recording, digital counters with return to zero. The left unit allows -12% to +12% speed control. I wonder how truly useful it is but, hey, there it is. The flurescent display has brightness adjustment. It's really nice. ... show more

    • Cheap build, unreliable performance, save your $ for something real
After using the W-1200 for over a year, I can safely say this was a total waste of money. If this is simply a playback machine for listening at home, it probably serves it's purpose. But don't waste any time or money duping cassettes with this. Not one duplication has turned out exactly like another. There's only a single stereo pot for input gain ("Rec Level"), yet somehow dupes come out with an L/R imbalance. Some come out perfectly balanced, then two in a row will have a 9 dB difference between L and R on playback. This happens regardless of cables used, blanks used, etc. NR is a poor stand-in for Dolby, if using NR is really your thing to begin with. Both left and right decks had inconsistencies in recording from the first day of use. Sometimes dubs come out perfect, sometimes they're unusable. At this price point, it'd be better to invest in a top of the line machine from the mid 80's-mid 90's that's been well cared for or restored by a pro. This thing blows. ... show more

    • One of the best to buy new on the market today.
This is essentially the Tascam 202 MK-VII without the "wings" for the rack mount. The machine is rather new on the market having only been released in late 2017, so.. one can't say much about its durability. But, let's not forget this ia TEAC. This brand is not known for doozy's. I wish it had balanced XLR's to double the RCA's. But.. we'll have to settle for what it is, for now. In all fairness, the $100-extra Tascam twin doesn't have that either. Otherwise.. happy taping!     • It's a little fussy with certain tapes
Overall, this deck isn't too bad. If you're curious about cassettes, and have 350 clams to blow, go for it. It will not play some of my tapes. I still haven't figured out why. My other decks have no problem with those tapes, but my other decks are expertly adjusted vintage decks that are built like tanks compared to this thing. The W-1200 tape transport mechanism is rather cheaply made, but considering what else is available (new), this is easily the best of the bunch. ... show more
