  • Beautiful sound, ambience, and overall component appearance and range of function
Although the SACD format, and indeed CD's as well, are often viewed as being old-school, Marantz has a wide range of SACD/CD players. Current offerings include the SA-KI Ruby, the SA-10, and this SACD 30n. Just announced is the SA-12SE and you might find the SA-14S1 Special Edition available as well. So...no fewer than five different possibilities just within the Marantz product line. Choosing among them is tricky since it is difficult to find a good location at which to compare the various product abilities. Price points are also all over the map, and older models with fewer capabilities often cost more than newer models with more extensive function (but perhaps lesser quality?). Unpacking the SACD30n revealed a hefty component along with a separate box of various cables and the remote controller, which happens to work nicely not only with the matching Model 30 amplifier but also with other Marantz preamps. The remote itself is well designed, fits well in your hand, but needs a little bit of room light to be legible - there's very little contrast between the remote control's basic color and the text printed on the control. We started off by connecting the component via the optical cable and playing a few standard CD's. Donald Fagen's Nightfly is always a good album to use as a reference source. The Marantz takes a good amount of time getting started, and unlike my 20 year old Sony CD player which simply loads the CD more or less instantly upon closing the CD tray, here you do need to wait a bit. There is also no depiction on the screen as to how many tracks the CD has, and no access at all to the CD index marks (if present). The sound is wonderfully well-balanced, and I had no gripe with the default decoding filter used by the player (I figured I'd get used to it before trying out the alternative filter). An LED in or near the CD tray would help in placing the disc in an otherwise dark room, and that would make more sense than the existing LED strips that light up the side of the player rather needlessly. I moved on to a SACD and couldn't hear anything, though here I tried out the headphone jack and realized the SACD was playing properly (it's a wonderful headphone amplifier, and those with high end headphones will be very pleased). Eventually I realized that a SACD can be played only through the RCA analog jacks. This notation is printed in tiny print somewhere in the large online pdf manual. Then it was off to the various other methods of playback: Bluetooth, Airplay, HEOS streaming of Amazon HD Music, directly connecting a computer (meaning I had to find a USB-C to USB-B connecting cable). In the midst of all that, there was a firmware update and a little software glitch with a streaming radio station to get past. It's up to you to recognize that Bluetooth connections are lower fidelity than alternatives and that Airplay is limited to CD-quality audio (which is better than Bluetooth). HEOS streaming and direct connections can provide high resolution audio, and the quality here will depend upon what you have stored on your smartphone, your computer, and what subscriptions you have at Amazon, Tidal, and so forth. You'll quickly note the differences assuming your other gear is up to the abilities of the SACD30n and it's a pleasure to always have a clear depiction of the track being played. Overall, the sound stage, depth, ambience, and overall feel of the music are things I can't take issue with. Marantz has done a superlative job putting everything together well. I would certainly appreciate a faster response to user inputs. Sometimes I just want to play a CD and not have to give anything else consideration. That should take place rapidly. MQA playback isn't available here - some folks have taken issue with that but I haven't yet crossed that barrier so this wasn't a concern for me. ... show more

  • Silver Chassis for the Silver Years
Well, I splurged. The Marantz reference SACD players came down in price once, twice, thrice and then I indulged myself. It was a long time ago, in 1990 to be exact, the last time that I bought a dedicated CD player, which I still have and still works just fine. But I knew there had been a lot of improvements in the past forty years. Back in the day, I was not that fond of CD, which didn't have the musicality of my old LP collection. I fell in love with laserdisc, and then resented DVD like a jilted lover, but took well to Blu-ray. I came late to SACD and did fall in love with that. If this Marantz player had been CD-only, I wouldn't have gotten it. But because I did get it, I am only now discovering the inherent glories of the CD format. It just happened that a big box of Rampal flute recordings arrived the same week as the player. I always found flute music to be way too harsh on CD β€” and I am a flautiste β€” so, boy did it blow me away when I popped in the first Rampal disc on the new player. Now I am more than halfway through the big box and have found an almost sinful pleasure in the experience. I had a large Rampal LP collection at one time, and got the sheet music for some of those pieces and played them in concert. It is just marvelous hearing them at their best. I have sampled several CD and SACD sets that I did not like before, and have found new appreciation for what I used to call "music from hell"). Everything on my reject pile needs a new hearing. So far there was one recording that ended up not so great on the new machine either. So this new machine cannot turn bad recordings into good, but it can make good ones greater. I am glad I got the silver chassis, because it makes the machine stand out against the line-up along my listening-room wall. I hope that I will have enough time in my silver years to get the benefit out of the new player. A criticism? One wonders why CD Text is available only on SACDs and not on those CDs which have the encoding. Considering the overall price points involved, how much more expensive would have CD Text for CDs have been? Still, I would rather hear the music from this new machine than stare at the texts on any other. ... show more

I can tell that Marantz has their act together. I was very impressed with the quality of construction and functionality of the unit! I took a star away only because as someone that was using it primarily as a CD player, I found the Denon 1600 NE to be sonically superior and less money.
