  • Compared against my old Phillips, the Dekala is 95% as good at 29% the cost, almost the same product
Style: No WiFi Classic Version
I bought the Dekala alarm light after comparing reviews for about 10 similar products here on Amazon. I chose it because it seems to be the most full-featured compared to the Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light I've used for about 8 years. The SmartSleep was around $130 when I bought it, and is $109 today, but the Dekala is only $32, so this is hardly a fair comparison by price range; yet the Dekala stands up to the comparison; this Dekala is a really terrific wake-up alarm light. I would have just bought another Philips except that I never liked the capacitance touch-screen controls, which were hard to push while laying on my bed, and not intuitive. Additionally, these seem to be the cause of the failure of the Philips light after 8 years. Now when its light is illuminated, it makes ticking sounds like the touch controls are being touched, but very rapid ticking, and finally now it is doing a strobe-light with the ticking, so it's truly not usable anymore. The Dekala has all the same features of the Philips light and seems like a direct clone of it, for the most part. It is well designed and seems quality built. Comparing the two products, I assigned 20 points to each to start and deducted points for disadvantages. Philips light: -1 point for the unintuitive, hard to use front screen touch controls Dekala light: -1 because the wake up sound comes on rather suddenly / loudly rather than getting gradually dimmer like the Philips -1 because the go-to-sleep light shuts off suddenly rather than getting gradually dimmer like the Philips, and also because when transitioning from the reading light to the go-to-sleep light it turns the light off and back on, which could disturb a partner already starting to drift off to sleep next to you 18 points for the Dekala vs 19 for the Philips makes it 95% as good, for 29% of the price. I love the various colors the Dekala can make, although I probably won't use them because I like the orange-yellow light that is similar to the Philips so I have everything set to the same color. The alternate colors are beautiful shades, though, and some people may like having the options. The sounds are good, and the birds chirping is nice to wake up to, even if I would like it to start softer and get louder over 60 seconds or so like the Philips instead of being abruptly loud like the Dekala is. Still, it's a gentle enough sound that it is hardly like waking up to one of those beeping alarm clocks, and beating the birds to the punch is enough reason for me to stop lying awake yawning and just get up and switch it off based on the light already waking me up. One other minor critique is that I wish the clock display got much darker at night. I could switch it all the way off, but I do like checking the time if I wake in the middle of the night so I know how much more time I have to sleep. Still, it's darker than most old beeping alarm clocks, and it will be ok. If it really bugs me, I could find a way to tape a piece of amber stage lighting gel over it or something. But I'll probably leave it as-is because I use a blindfold at night anyway and it's really not that bright on its dim setting. If both lights were priced at $108, I would probably get the Philips, even though I really don't like the front panel controls and hate setting the time on the Philips. This is because the Philips is just smoother with the light and sound transitions. But at $32, the Dekala wins. The disadvantages are not very bad, just issues of refinement they may improve with later versions. Even though I can't compare how long it lasts vs the Philips lasting eight years, at $32 who cares. If it lasts two years it will be worth it, and it seems quality built so I'm betting it lasts about as long as the Philips. Overall, I'm glad I tried the Dekala, and I reccomend it. ... show more

  • Charges your phone--and other great features
Style: No WiFi Classic Version
I haven't done extensive research on all similar products, but from what I can tell, the one distinguishing feature from such products in a similar price range is that this clock has a USB port to charge your phone. So rather than have to pick what thing to lose from my bedside outlet, I can just replace my phone charger with this clock. This helps put this light clock over others for me. Downside: charging though the clock is slower than my normal adapter. But when I'm just leaving it through the night, no big deal. The rest of the features seem to be the same as similar products, but I'll comment on them anyway because I really enjoy them. And if these features weren't there, it'd be harder to pick this clock over other clocks despite having the charger function. 1) You can turn off the LED lights that display the time. If you just want the waking light functionality but don't like small red lights glaring in the darkness, reminding you how it's this late and you still haven't fallen asleep, you can turn it off (and back on) with a couple clicks of a button. 2) You can turn off the alarm sound and just use the waking light on its own. I like the preset sounds, but maybe sometimes you just want the light to slowly reveal itself rather than it be accompanied by a sudden sound. 3) Makes a good lamp, and I enjoy the additional color light show feature. 4) I don't really think I'll use the FM radio feature that much or at all, but it does automatically scan and preset ALL radio stations that have some signal. So you can just scroll through the stations that actually air something (though it does pick up poor quality ones too) rather than scroll through the channels that air nothing. 5) You can use a 24-hour setting rather than AM/PM. I've always liked not using AM/PM. 6) It's kind of...cute. Those features stood out most to me and made this a great clock. But just to mention some more: two alarm presets, can set brightness of alarm light, can set volume of alarm sound, a sleep mode (light will dim instead of brighten), 9-minute snooze, and some more fine-grained settings I don't want to bother listing that allow you to really customize things to your preferences. Oh, and there's a battery that preserves your settings if you ever have to unplug the clock (though I actually haven't checked this function). Downsides: 1) I think I'll always need the instruction booklet because there are so many features and settings that use the same buttons. I may have used it enough now to know how to work everything, or at least the functions I primarily use, but there really is a lot. Single click this, double click that, long-hold this. That kind of stuff. You kind of have to learn the clock; I had to refer to the booklet for the first more than a few times. God help you if you forget how to set something you want in the future and don't have the booklet. (I still like the features themselves.) 2) Even though the radio scans all the channels, scrolling through them is a pain in the butt. You have to long hold a button to move through the presets. As soon as I found a decent station I just left it there. Regular click is reserved for radio volume. Not sure why they couldn't use the same buttons that control alarm volume, but I don't know anything about how hard that sort of wiring or whatever is. That's it. It's a great clock. ... show more

  • Works but it slowly runs faster and faster
Style: No WiFi Classic Version
I know my title may be confusing. When I first got this I was really excited. It was a little confusing setting it up because there are so many buttons and they only have pictures associated with them but I did figure it out. Love that it comes with 2 separate alarms so I can set one for weekdays and one for weekends. However, I have noticed that it slowly runs fast. At first, I noticed it was a couple of minutes fast, even though I set it according to the time on my phone. Then I noticed it was 8 minutes fast. Now, 14 months later, and I am on vacation and not needing the alarm and I am realizing it is running 20 minutes fast. Didn't realize I was waking up much earlier for work than I needed to. As I mentioned, the buttons are a bit confusing, so fixing the time is not as easy unless you have the instructions right there. All in all, it works and it wakes me up, it just does it 20 minutes earlier than I want it to. I would recommend keeping the instruction book near it at all times for when you have to adjust the time. ... show more

  • Amazing way to naturally wake up
Style: No WiFi Classic Version
Since the day has been getting shorter and morning has been dark, I have been struggling to wake up and report to work on time. ( I have to clock in at 7:30 am) My alarm goes off but it’s so dark and my body would not wake up. This alarm clock ( I’m only using the light feature) start gradually lighting up my room and becomes brighter as the time goes by. I begin to naturally wake up before my cell phone alarm goes off and I feel well rested. Prior to this, I felt exhausted and felt not rested at all though out the day. But now, not only I’m waking up on time but I feel great all day. Set up is not as complicated as people mentioned. ... show more
