  • Unreliable connector clips cause variable resistance and therefor no true colors.
I integrated a 4x8ft light weight lexan covered light fixture into the ceiling to provide ambience for a hang-out space inside a greenhouse.. In order to do this, I needed to use many L- or T-shape connection clips. These clips are unreliable, because they cause variable resistance or even cause a disconnect on one of the four electric conductors between two LED strip sections. After the initial install half of my array was completely out or missed one of the 3 colors. I decided to solder a bunch of cross connecting wires in order to bridge weak connectors. Still there are various different colors as seen in the picture I took. This is the "WHITE" setting on low brightness. I bought the extra kit with multiple connectors in order to design my array. Bad thing here is, that there are only 2 T-Connectors with this kit. I would have liked to make a "ladder" pattern, where each "step" is getting fed from 2 ends to mitigate high resistance on one side of the "ladder". Also negative is the fact that hitlights does not sell just LED strips by the foot. They all come with controllers and extra clips. I needed an extra 8 feet for my array and had to buy a whole 2nd set with controller. Good fact: Every 5 sections there are solder spots instead of cutting lines, so soldering is easy. It is disapponting to me, that there is no support for Apple devices. The remote, that comes with it appears flimsy and the soft touch keys probably won't work for a long time. Every time you disconnect and re-connect the power the controller goes into a "connecting" mode for bluetooth which causes the lights to blink rapidly. I would like to use it with a simple light switch, which turns on the last used setting/color. I also miss a "smooth" mode for color changes with music. All the microphone controlled modes are pretty aggressive, flashy discotheke type color changes. If somebody from HITLIGHTS reads this: Make your strips more DYI friendly: strips by the foot without any controllers, more reliable connection clips, connectors sold individually and not in kits, SIRI support, simple on/of switching capability without the flimsy remote, most awesome would be a tutorial on how to use it with an arduino controller! All said, thanks! Next time I will try another brand. ... show more

  • Great first experience with LEDs
I do a lot of semi interesting things with electronics, but I've never used an LED light strip. Not sure why...anyway, I'm rebuilding an old arcade cabinet, and rather than simply use an 18 inch fluorescent tube to light up the marquis I decided to use these LED lights, as it offered a couple of advantages - not including any possible power savings. The first is space - I can use these in the marquis and still use the large space in the marquis for audio equipment and reach it easily without remove anything. The second advantage is the dimmer - depending on where the cabinet is placed (as in how bright the room is) and what type of marquis you need to illuminate, the dimmer is a big advantage. This dimmer switch seems solid enough and doesn't seem to introduce any noise to the audio or video. It has a nice knob that allows for discrete placement - you don't have to see it to use it - you just need to be able to touch it (so under the game controls it works fine, even though you can't see it). The lights appear visually correct for my needs in terms of color and the dimmer really lets me dial in the brightness so the marquis isn't over exposed. I've read another complaint that the driver power supply is always hot if you turn them off by the dimmer, but in my use case the dimmer isn't really used as an on/off switch, it's just a dimmer. I turn them off by cutting the master power to the cabinet. If I was installing these in my kitchen, for instance, they'd be connected to a wall switch/Sonoff combo for on/off and the dimmer switch would be for dimming only. And even leaving the driver power supply energized doesn't strike me as a huge problem, even in the odd circumstance where that might occur, so I wouldn't be too concerned about that issue. The packaging, instructions, accessories and online documentation really struck me as nice - not your average pile of random electronics in a padded envelope that looked like they had a rough transcontinental voyage. I don't know that all vendors provide that sort of experience, so I'm impressed by Hitlight - I imagine that would be my preferred choice should I order more of these. Speaking of ordering more... As I mentioned, I've not used LED light strips before, even though I've installed half of my house's lighting and wall switches and all of the networking, automation, and camera equipment. But after using these and seeing how well they work, honestly I'm sort of looking for an excuse to install some of these elsewhere along with some motion sensors. ... show more
