Comparing this to Dyson D40 which I had for 10 years and used almost daily. Weight. Shark is definitely heavier and bulkier than Dyson D40, so is its head. I could not get under tables/chairs that easily as with Dyson and had to move things around more. Size. Dyson felt more ergonomic for petite users, Shark is taller and it takes a bit to get used to the height of it. It is not a flaw, just different. Gliding on the floor. Shark is like butter compared to Dyson. It feels like it is not touching the floor and glides above it, while Dyson felt like I'm riding on gravel, leaving marks on the floor from those tiny head wheels. The main brush (on the head). When in use, it pulls vacuum forward, similar to self propelled grass mowers :) There's no way I can vacuum going forward all the time, so this is something I need to get used to. It's not pulling hard, but you definitely feel it. Features. Dyson had one multi use attachment (kind of 2 in 1), Shark has 3 separate attachments AND you can take the canister off of the head, use the hose long and short, and this gives you a myriad of options of usage. Love it. Suction power. OK, I was a huge fan of Dyson, my 10 years of having it speak for itself, right? It was like a marriage, haha. But now, after just initial try of Shark, I can agree with my aunt who keeps saying "The new one is always better than the previous". Originally it was about a partner, but I find it very true regarding vacuums. Shark seems to leave it very very clean wherever it passes, and even the air feels cleaner in the room. Very nice. Noise. Shark is quieter. Dyson had noise issues which showed up while warranty was still valid, so it got fixed (otherwise it is very expensive to fix), but it was still way louder than Shark. Head lights. Here it's simple, Shark has them, Dyson does not. Are they essential? No, but a nice addition when vacuuming in darker places or in the evening, and they give vacuum some kind of character :) Ease of use. Overall - super easy. I put it together not even looking at the manual. Maneuverability is good, I just wish it bend more while trying to vacuum under side tables. Will update regarding cleaning/emptying the canister. ... show more

I have been using a different brand name vacuum that I would have to replace every 4-6 months. I do commercial janitorial jobs, therefore it does get more use than average. This shark vacuum is working out great, it is much lighter to carry around and pull in/out of my suv. The suction is way better than the previous brand and not as noisy, which is a blessing. My only complaint is the length of the cord is shorter than the other vacuum, I think it’s bc the cord is very stiff. I’m going to straighten it out and leave in the sun to see if that helps. My hope is that it will last at least 12-18 months, if I get at least that, I will be happy considering my heavy use. ... show more

    • This puppy sucks in the best possible way

pros: -This puppy sucks dirt, pet hair, dust, spider webs, and anything else in the best possible way. -The swivel steering is a very different feel if this is your first swiveler. Being a swivel virgin I'll have to get used to it. It does make approaching a spot from different angles easier. -It feels sturdily built. I worked up a sweat moving it around, unhooking the hand held tank and carrying that around. I liked that I could bring the above-floor wand with it so that I didn't have to squat too much, but when I did the accessory wouldn't lay flat to get the right suction, insert squatting again. Will have to look into other accessories. (later discovered the tool head can be swiveled, there's that word again, to adjust, will have to see how easy that is next time I vacuum) -Did I mention that this thing really has great suction? -The low/floor suction setting is not so loud that my dog was bothered. When I used the high/carpet setting he was out the door. - The suction control slider made it easier to vacuum my bathroom throw matts. It worked especially well on the larger ones, not so well on the small one by the toilet. The vacuum still wanted to eat it. yum yum - The tubing is sturdy and tightly coiled. I hope it relaxes some as it does not give enough leeway while holding the detachable dust cup section. I'll have to work theist cup emptying process out. Like most of these types of tools, when I emptied it a swirl of dust arose from the trash can. It did empty well though. I did not have to reach in and remove any pet hair clumps. - And last but not least, this vacuum got a lot of dust my old one couldn't. I really like that. I hope it lasts. cons: -The cord really is a problem. I get it, with the lift off handle a permanent hook would not work. The little clamp hook by the top cord holder helps, but it still gets tangled. Another clamp hook on the back of the handle would solve this problem. As it is, I held it in the same hand as I held the handle in and it was a bit of a hassle each time I stopped to lift something or change accessories, but it worked. It will get old. I'll figure something out but I would have gathered Shark designers do that. - The dust cup blocks the brush roll indicator light while operating the vacuum in an upright position. Needs better placement. - The accessory holder is useless. In the first room I vacuumed, one or the other of the accessories fell off 4 times before I just took them off and put them aside. Got to another room and needed them so had to go fetch them. Oh bother. Will I have to wear a tool belt for my accessories with this thing? - Will have to figure out a tool for under the bed. The whole upright does not fit and if I use the wand, the little accessory does not lie flat. For now I'll use my swiffer style broom. There has to be a better solution. ... show more

I was replacing a 5 year old Shark Lift-Away XL UV550, which worked well until it didn't. I replaced with something I thought was similar to be able to already know how to use it. It was simple to put together out of the box. Actually it was nicer than my old Shark. I used the Lift-Away on my stairs and it was a dream--unsure why I didn't use that feature with my old vacuum on my stairs. I do wish it came with a Pet Power Brush, which my old one had .. even tho it broke, too. I see I can buy them on Amazon, or through Shark, tho. It is very powerful. I also purchased replacement filters as I know I'll need them .. I wash mine almost every other use, and know it helps to put in new ones more often than not. The day mine broke, and I was lucky enough to buy it on pre-Black Friday half-off sale, so pleased at the price. Great vacuum! ... show more
