Comparing this to Dyson D40 which I had for 10 years and used almost daily. Weight. Shark is definitely heavier and bulkier than Dyson D40, so is its head. I could not get under tables/chairs that easily as with Dyson and had to move things around more. Size. Dyson felt more ergonomic for petite users, Shark is taller and it takes a bit to get used to the height of it. It is not a flaw, just different. Gliding on the floor. Shark is like butter compared to Dyson. It feels like it is not touching the floor and glides above it, while Dyson felt like I'm riding on gravel, leaving marks on the floor from those tiny head wheels. The main brush (on the head). When in use, it pulls vacuum forward, similar to self propelled grass mowers :) There's no way I can vacuum going forward all the time, so this is something I need to get used to. It's not pulling hard, but you definitely feel it. Features. Dyson had one multi use attachment (kind of 2 in 1), Shark has 3 separate attachments AND you can take the canister off of the head, use the hose long and short, and this gives you a myriad of options of usage. Love it. Suction power. OK, I was a huge fan of Dyson, my 10 years of having it speak for itself, right? It was like a marriage, haha. But now, after just initial try of Shark, I can agree with my aunt who keeps saying "The new one is always better than the previous". Originally it was about a partner, but I find it very true regarding vacuums. Shark seems to leave it very very clean wherever it passes, and even the air feels cleaner in the room. Very nice. Noise. Shark is quieter. Dyson had noise issues which showed up while warranty was still valid, so it got fixed (otherwise it is very expensive to fix), but it was still way louder than Shark. Head lights. Here it's simple, Shark has them, Dyson does not. Are they essential? No, but a nice addition when vacuuming in darker places or in the evening, and they give vacuum some kind of character :) Ease of use. Overall - super easy. I put it together not even looking at the manual. Maneuverability is good, I just wish it bend more while trying to vacuum under side tables. Actually, it's got more features than I need. I think. I'm not really sure. Do I need my upright to be able to convert to a canister vacuum? I guess if I want to use to to clean the inside of my truck, then the answer is "yes". I was torn between this $219 Shark, and a $599 Dyson. I posted the question on Facebook. The Dysons got good reviews 80% of the time, and horrible reviews the other 20, all because of reliability. Everyone that has a Shark loves it. I checked Consumer Reports, and the Shark rated higher. It also rates higher on Amazon. So, I bought this very versatile, extremely powerful, Shark. When I told our maid (why didn't I ask her before I bought it's?), she was thrilled. Many of her clients have Dysons, and she doesn't care for them. One has a Shark, and she said she loves it. Today is her first day using it in our home. The amount of dog fur, dust, dirt etc it vacuumed up in just our daughter's bedroom, is more than our Bissel would pick up in the entire house. I thought I wouldn't like the narrow width. It would take longer to vacuum a room right? Well, not really, and here is why-It is very light, and it sucks like a beast. This means you can vacuum faster with less effort. I love it. My maid loves it. Forget Dyson, buy a Shark! Update-Did I mention the suction power of this vacuum? I'm a guy. I love power. I was sitting in my recliner in the living room. My maid had the crevice tool on the hose vacuuming around the edges of the hardwood floors, and the tops of the base molding in the foyer. I could feel the air discharging from the vacuum 16 feet away from me! If it's blowing that much air, it indicates it is sucking massive amounts too! With our old vacuum, when she was done with the whole house, the canister would be about half full. That canister was about 2/3s the size of this one. We've already emptied this canister once because it was full, and it looks like it is going to get filled again. So, this vacuum is picking up almost 3x more dirt than the old one. I showed her how to turn off the beater bar to use it on hardwood, how you can remove just the handle and not the entire nozzle section, and all the other features on it. She was amazed with everything it does, how versatile it is. She was also a little embarrassed that she didn't know about all of the features, since one of her other clients has one. She is now going to recommend the Shark to all of her clients that are looking to buy a new vacuum. Just so you understand what I'm saying, a professional cleaning lady, who uses clients vacuums (so homes don't get cross contaminated with pet dander and such) is now recommending the Shark to all of her clients! To me, that speaks volumes about how great it is. Another update-It's time to throw away the broom and dustpan. Turn off the beater bar, and it cleans the hardwood floors much better than a broom. The dog hair doesn't blow around in the wind like it does with a broom. No little streaks of dirt like with a broom. Our maid loves it more and more as she uses it. I was replacing a 5 year old Shark Lift-Away XL UV550, which worked well until it didn't. I replaced with something I thought was similar to be able to already know how to use it. It was simple to put together out of the box. Actually it was nicer than my old Shark. I used the Lift-Away on my stairs and it was a dream--unsure why I didn't use that feature with my old vacuum on my stairs. I do wish it came with a Pet Power Brush, which my old one had .. even tho it broke, too. I see I can buy them on Amazon, or through Shark, tho. It is very powerful. I also purchased replacement filters as I know I'll need them .. I wash mine almost every other use, and know it helps to put in new ones more often than not. The day mine broke, and I was lucky enough to buy it on pre-Black Friday half-off sale, so pleased at the price. Great vacuum! ... show more
