Works great and well made. The straps didn't even go around our smallest kayak though. They were about 12" too short so I had to go buy straps at the hardware store so that was an extra expense but it works well.

Straps too short for my sit on top Kayak. Nuts securing mounting bracket to roof rack will not stay tight. They loosen themselves every 15 minutes while driving at 65 mph. Unsafe product in opinion, should be removed from Amazon. Update. The nuts provided are not true nylocks. There is very little polymer material in the threads. The nuts can easily be turned on the bolts by hand which should not be easy to do with a nylock nut. ... show more

    • You get what you pay for - J-bars are nice, but hardware and cam straps are not great.

For $50, you get what you pay for with this item, and as long as you know that, it's ok. The j-bars require assembly, and everything was packaged nicely in the box. The j-bars, metal bracket plates, and rubber bases were all put in bubble wrap, and the hardware was in its own ziplock bag. An instruction sheet was included - no words really just a single large diagram of how all the pieces were to assemble. For someone not used to assembling things like this and reading lackluster instructions, it could be confusing. Once I figured it out and got the right tools (deep-socket and rachet are useful), it probably took 15-20 minutes total for assembly. Installing the j-bars on the roof crossbars was not hard, but I have to warn you that at least with my package, two of the eight plastic knobs were threaded incorrectly or manufactured incorrectly, and wouldn't tighten on the mounting screws. On one of them, using channel-locks just broke the plastic knob. They really aren't needed to be honest, so I used a 13mm wrench and tightened the mounting nuts that way. Took a longer but no worries. The j-bars themselves are sturdy, have nice padding on them, and look nice. I carried two kayaks 40+ miles on the highway and no issues at all after I installed the j-bars. However, the cam straps that came with the set were at least 24" too short and weren't able to be used to tie-down the kayaks. Basically, the cam straps were useless, though I was able to use two of them together to use as a bow tie-down on one of the kayaks. Thankfully I had brought four rachet straps with me just in case, so I had to use those instead of the cam straps. I have since purchased cam straps from Lowe's that are much longer. So, the j-bars themselves get 5-stars, the cam straps and knobs get 1-star. Overall, 3-stars. ... show more

For the price, you really can’t go wrong. We’ve had a set of these for years and transported our kayaks all over the place. Just got another set to use in our other vehicle. They are quick on and quick off the vehicle. I’ve never used the straps that come with these and only have used ratchet straps. I’d recommend doing that. ... show more

I have hauled two kayaks several times this summer since getting these racks. One 12 feet long, 78lbs, the other a shorter 8 footer, about 20 lbs. What really made me want to make this review happened the other night. I was on my way home from a day on the river with my friend who owns the smaller kayak when we hit a deer. Smashed in the front of my jeep pretty well, but we were fine. Jeep is currently in the shop waiting to see if it can be fixed or if it's totalled. These racks though, they held perfectly fine, and neither kayak moved an inch lol. ... show more

One of the Nylock nuts (part 7) part #M8-1.25 was not threaded. (see photo, left part is not threaded like the one on the right.) I spent half an hour on top of my van trying to get it started upside down onto the bolt and finally gave up and took it in the house and it wouldn't go on any of the loose bolts either, because it has no threads. I just need a replacement for this one part. All Amazon will offer me is a whole new product with the return of this one. Assembly of the racks is a bit tedious and I don't want to take them all apart, ship them back and start reassembly all over again. I have all the racks assembled. I just need this one little part to mount them on my van. I'm going to use the product as it is without the last Nylock Nut and hope everything works out okay. I've already got several hours into this and I don't want to start all over. Just send me the freaking nut! ... show more
