Frequently asked questions

The installation process involves assembling the J-Bar holders using the included hardware, then mounting them onto your car's roof rack bars. Ensure the bars are evenly spaced and securely tightened. Once the J-Bar holders are in place, you can load your kayak, secure it with the tie-down straps by passing them over the kayak and under the roof bars before buckling and tightening them.

The kayak rack is designed to be universal, meaning it should fit most cars with existing roof rack bars, whether they are round, square, or factory bars. However, it's important to check the specifications for maximum width compatibility and ensure your vehicle's roof can support the weight of the kayaks.

The weight limit for the kayak rack typically depends on both the product's capability and your vehicle's roof capacity. Most racks can support up to around 75 pounds per kayak, but always refer to the manufacturer's guidelines and your vehicle's roof capacity to ensure safety.

Loading a kayak onto the rack can be managed solo, but it might be challenging depending on the kayak's weight and your physical strength. It's often easier to load from the rear of the car, lifting one end of the kayak onto the rack, then pushing it up and onto the rack fully. Using a kayak loading assist or having a second person can make this much easier.

  • Outstanding for the price
I ordered two sets to carry two kayaks on my Thule crossbars. They work exactly as expected and do a great job of making it easy to secure my kayaks to my car. The metal tubing which is used seems strong and secure and the bolts are a good size as well. Take your time with assembly and make sure all of the carriage bolt heads are seated properly in the frame. The rubber piece that fits over the frame does a great job of cushioning the bottom of the boats, but also can prevent the bolts from being properly seated. Tighten everything. Attaching them to the roof rails also takes some time but the design (with two separate nuts) keeps everything secure. I've had my kayaks on my roof at freeway speeds several times now and everything stays put. I'm even impressed with the straps which came with the kit...I use them along with a set of bungee cords and they keep everything tight. I'm sure there are probably more convenient and easier-to-setup systems out there. But for the price, these are great and do the job perfectly. ... show more

  • Great product
These were a little hard to put the bolts through the rubber when I first assembled them. Once that was done they were amazing. They fit nicely on our Malone cross bars. It is easier to put on and take off if you put one long bolt on the left and one shorter one on the right. This way I only have to take off one nut and washer when I want to take them off my Dodge Journey. I unscrew the short bolt side and loosen the long bolt side and I can keep it mostly together. These are study enough to hold Pelican kayaks going 75 miles a hour on the highway. We have had them for a year now and they rarely get taken off my car. Love them and am buying a third set now as we are getting one more Kayak. Great price! ... show more

  • Hmmmmm
excellent Bargain.... not the best craftsmanship. a couple of drilled holes not perfect. Not the easiest Assembly, and depending on how high you rack is from the roof after assembly you may have to cut a couple of bolts down . I did ! BUT all things considered if i take care of it it (not leave it on the roof year round) should last a few season. And it can do the Job of a 149.00 rack X2, for my needs... for almost a third of the PRICE. 20% of the price for a Thule is just the name. the other 49% is prolly the material upgrade and out the box readiness. but if you have 2 kayaks and want to travel you can spend $$300 or $60. things to consider : climate you live in, do leave you racks up for months at a time, how often do you travel long distance with your kayaks/boards, are you are SOME assembly required or an open box & go. ... show more

  • Inexpensive way to transport two kayaks
Yeah the bars rotate a bit when mounted on round yakima q tower set on my old Corolla, however with two 40 pound 8.5 foot kayaks mounted they remain secure and snug. Made at least 4 or so trips and back of about 90 miles in one direction (some state highway driving …no interstate) and have had no issues. I recommend tying bow and stern lines to both kayaks for added security. Internet search you can find cheap ways to do this with just some inexpensive rope. …other minor issues was one part was misshapen when received but I contacted the vendor and they shipped me a replacement part within days. Good inexpensive product. ... show more

  • Excellent performance and value
Very pleased with these mounts. I researched mounts for a few months before deciding on these. They were the least expensive I found and was a little concerned they might not be robust enough for the two kayaks we tow on my 2014 Kia Sorento. However, after about seven long hauls (so far), they have held up perfectly, they have not come loose and they hold the kayaks steady, with no shifting or sliding. Excellent value and excellent performance. Assembly from the box is a bit of a chore and took my son and me about 20 minutes. After that, they are a breeze to work with. ... show more

  • Inconsistent product quality - Do NOT buy!
I do not like to write bad reviews, but I hope this can be helpful for shoppers. I purchased this based on the good reviews; however, there were a number of mixed reviews too. Many of the negative reviews comment on the "lack of quality control" and "poor fitting". I would have to agree with them, it appears the manufacturer is not checking on the product they're selling. Customers are either receiving good products, or really faulty ones. I received a faulty pair unfortunately. They were not the easiest to fit: it appears they were slightly rusted and corroded on the inside. Once a pair was able to fit together, some of the smaller screws for the four corners would not fit through. No matter how hard I tried, 3/4 J-racks had at least 2 or more screws that would not fit. I even tried refitting each piece into a different one to see if they would be a better fit. So I ultimately tried some modifications based off a friends' recommendation to better secure the pieces, and it seemed to hold together okay. Fast forward to the second day of hauling Kayaks with the racks (had driven at least 100 miles), and one of J-racks comes apart while I was driving... Yikes!!! It was the top half, and it just came loose and hit the back of my Jeep. Thankfully that Kayak was secured to the other J-rack so it did not fly off. Regardless, it was very unsettling and I'm very thankful no-one was behind me. So I learned my lesson: you pay for what you get. After this ordeal, I ordered a $150 3-way rack elsewhere. Looking back, I would have rather spent more money on a better rack knowing my kayaks would be safe instead of purchasing something 'cheap'. It doesn't need much explanation, but cost/risk of losing your kayaks while driving is far greater than purchasing a better J-rack system! Bottom line: I don't think the manufacturer has any quality control on this product based on the reviews (they're either great, or terrible). Save the hassle and stress: pay a little more now for something better and it will be well-worth knowing your kayaks are safe! ... show more
