  • SMOOOOOOOOOTH.
Size: 16X Blu-Ray, 16X DVD, 48X CD Read/Write Color: 16X
I recently came across some DVD's that have data I wanted to extract. Back when I loaded the files onto said DVD's, CD/DVD drives were commonplace on PC's. Well, my five-month-old PC doesn't have a disc drive. While I'd gladly pop the cover off the tower and install a drive myself, the PC is still under warranty, and as I've had issues with this particular brand of PC, I want the warranty valid should I need to use it. I bought one of the countless slim, single cable DVD drives here on Amazon and hated it. Since the drive's single cable managed both current draw and data signals, the drive would get starved for power and shut down for a split second, but it was long enough to interrupt all attempted data transfers. I'm relieved that none of my DVD's were damaged by this, but it did give me a good scare. I decided I needed a drive that had a separate PSU and hoped that this choice would free up the USB connection for dedicated signal transfer. I'm just a casual electronics tinkerer, so I'm not going to authoritively state that my thought process is correct. But it seems to be the case; as I state in the review title, this drive has been so smooth. I'll confess that I balked at this drive's price tag, but unless someone pours funds to make discs bleeding edge tech again, computers are not going to be sold with disc drives again, so I reasoned this purchase may pay off in the long run. I haven't had this drive for long, but I can say it's been great in the short term. The drive is shockingly quiet, given that I have it on a shelf that seems to amplify vibrations and harmonics. It doesn't matter if I pop in a CD to retrieve an old CAD file from my trade school days, or a DVD that's loaded to full memory. This drive quickly and easily reads any disc I've put into it, and it doesn't interfere with my PC's basic functions. For example, when I would leave the single cable drive connected to my PC, my PC would take painfully long, literally minutes to index recent files when I opened File Explorer. And I don't have many files on this PC! In stark contrast, I've had this disc drive pulling data off a DVD, with a music player running, two Internet tabs up, and am able to open File Explorer and instantly see my recent files. So, I have to say from my experience and examination, this drive is worth it's price. Not only have I been very pleased with its performance, but I find the hardware of good quality too. I haven't popped this drive open and don't intend to do so, but the main enclosure is cast and brushed aluminum, and the drive's face and disc tray are smoothed plastic. I'm very glad I have this drive now! ... show more

  • Works great burning M DISC BD-Rs with macOS Sierra
Size: 16X Blu-Ray, 16X DVD, 48X CD Read/Write Color: 16X
I have been happy with everything I've purchased from OWC, and this is no exception. This is a really nice burner. The enclosure is heavy and built like a tank, which helps to minimize vibration. You can definitely hear the disc spinning, but that’s true of all optical drives I’ve ever used (going all the way back to my external APC SCSI CD-ROM drive in 1994). There is a power switch on the back of the drive, allowing you to power it on only when you need it. This does not switch off the power brick, which will continue to consume a small amount of electricity, even with the drive switched off. The drive came with two blank BD-R discs in DVD cases. It also came with a link to download two pieces of software: DiscLabel from Smile Software (for creating, printing, and sharing CD and DVD labels, jewel case inserts, and DVD covers) and Data Backup 3 from Prosoft Engineering (utility that allows you to backup, restore, and synchronize your data). I have not yet downloaded or tried either piece of software. I’m using this burner with a 2013 iMac running macOS Sierra and Apple’s built-in software for burning data discs. I have burned 20 Verbatim M DISC BD-R discs (single layer 25 GB capacity) with one failed burn (verification failure). The successful burns were done with minimal software running (Activity Monitor and Finder only). The failed burn was done with additional software running (Firefox with lots of tabs and windows open). I suspect that the failed burn was due to the additional system load from running Firefox. Ensure that you have minimal software running, and you should get reliable results. This can be a bit annoying, especially if you have many discs to burn, but it’s more of an issue with the computer keeping the data flowing to the drive than an issue with the drive itself. I have not yet tried burning any DVDs or multi-layer BD-R discs. Pros: Solid build, reliable performance, burns M DISC BD-R discs, includes some software for macOS and Windows, product description on Amazon is accurate Cons: Reliable burns require minimal software running on computer, physically much larger than Apple USB SuperDrive (which only handles CDs and DVDs), does not include software for burning DVD or Blu-ray video discs ... show more

  • nice looking, well-made USB3 enclosure
Size: Enclosure Color: Enclosure
I installed my old 5.25" BD-RE ASUS BW-12B1ST SATA drive in it and it is working well so far. I have not tried writing discs, only reading, but expect everything to work as it did when I had the drive SATA connected. It appears as vendor:1e91 Other World Computing, product:de2c Mercury Pro Optical. The price seems a little high, but it does feel like a premium product and I think the value is acceptable. It is all metal, silver brushed aluminum with rubber/plastic feet. The screws that hold the feet in place also hold the enclosure together. The screws needed to mount the drive are included and there are rubber bushings to reduce vibration. It has no fan and is surprisingly quiet. I actually think my drive is quieter in this enclosure than it was in my old PC case. There are a two things keeping me from giving it 5 stars: 1. As others have noted, including longer USB-A to USB-B 3.0 cable would be nice, especially at this price point. 2. There were no assembly instructions in the box. If you're buying one of these you probably already know what you're doing and can figure it out, but I was surprised. ... show more
