  • Fast noiseless data drive, but the rebate check is in the snail mail
Update, 5/16/2018 - I emailed the rebate vendor, who replied along the lines of "any day now" - but the rebate, approved on 1/31, eventually arrived on 5/16 - this for a product I bought and paid for on January 5. ASUS, you make great equipment, but if you're going to sell by offering rebates, be honest, and say you make paying customers jump through administrative hoops to get a rebate that gets there six months later. I have ex-wives who paid me back quicker. Take away one more star.... :( Update, 4/30/2018: As the $20 rebate was part of my purchase decision: ASUS' FAQ states the rebate debit card will be sent 8 to 10 weeks after approval. Approval, in my case, was confirmed for 1/31, it is now 12 weeks later, but no rebate. Deducting one star, each week it does not get here... Update, 1/27/18: Realizing just the mention of USB 3.0 isn't going to really help you understand how fast or slow this thing is, I ran some tests. I used old Verbatim 2x 25GB BD disks I've had on the shelf, not the fastest, and my existing older licensed Cyberlink DVD Suite, which is BD compatible. Results at the bottom of this review, so as not to clutter your reading pleasure up with lotsa numbers. Suffice it to say: WOW! I am upping this to five stars, despite its bulk and the slooow rebate. Original, 1/26/18: Though a little on the large side, this drive plugged into both my Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 laptops, and did its thing. Apart from Cyberlink software I purchased a while back (the drive comes with Cyberlink software I have not installed, but is data only), I have managed to get it to work (playing Blu-ray movies, that is) with the freeware VLC Media Player - in both cases, you have to make sure you have the latest decryption keys installed in your software. VLC tells you how to do that at their website - it is a bit finicky, but works well. I bought this drive because I have an older Buffalo Blu-ray writer, which works fine, but only has USB 2.0, and writing BD data disks can mean pumping 25 GB though your port, twice, and with the USB 3.0 this has that goes a lot quicker. I don't have a comparison for you, but this ASUS is fast and very quiet. I wish I could tell you about its Windows compatibility, but there have been so many crippled versions of Windows, you may just have to try whether or not yours writes Blu-ray disks. Unlike DVD, Blu-ray was never an integrated format in Windows. Some of the Windows installs shipped with PCs or laptops were provided with DVD or Blu-ray driver software by the equipment manufacturer, after Microsoft stopped paying license fees for that, although my current versions of Windows 10 Pro, with the Creators update, all recognize Blu-ray drives and disks, and are capable of writing data CDs, data DVDs, and data Blu-rays. Movies, not so much, and as Amazon's return policy is masterful, I think you can just try what you can do with whatever software you have. You should be able to view the contents of any Blu-ray disk in Windows, that capability is built in, and Windows normally is capable of writing data to a pre-formatted BD disk. As I said, the VLC media player needs some tweaking, but plays back almost anything you can throw at it, and is pretty region-agnostic. If you want to play movies, don't have the right software, and don't have the chutzpah to experiment, spend more money and buy a drive that comes with the right software. This ASUS is a solid drive, fast, noiseless, and comes at a good price, if they still do the discount. If you don't mind my teaching gramps to suck eggs - if you're thinking of backing up to this thing, remember that 25GB is a lot of data to lose, and optical disks are notorious for not being able to be read on a different drive five years hence - that was another reason for me to get this as a second drive, better redundant than sorry. ---- So here some results from testing, 1/27/18. Lots of variables, there isn't such a thing as a useful benchmark. Using Cyberlink Powerproducer, part of an older Cyberlink suite that is Blue-ray compatible, I took two 720p video files of different formats, a total of 80 minutes, 5.723 GB, and burned a Blu-ray disk with them. Previous tests, on a slower laptop, with a USB 2.0 Buffalo BD writer resulted in the compile-and-burn process for a one hour movie took some six hours. This time, an HP 2570p Elitebook, with Windows 10 Pro, 16GB of RAM and a 2.9GHz Intel Core i7 processor, took just under 13 minutes to write the 80 minute Blu-ray movie, with an effective speed of some 7.4 MB/sec. It would write a full size (1 or 2 hour 1080p with 7 channel Dolby) Blu-ray movie disk in about 56 minutes. That's pretty quick. Then, using Microsoft's standard Windows 10 Pro backup-and-recovery software, which I prefer using because in 10 years' time, Microsoft and Windows will likely still exist, and be able to read 10 year old backup archives, I did an incremental backup. This ended up being 2.53 GB in size, wrote to BD disk without any drivers needed - Windows 10 Pro knows the BD format, and can use it, and took 27 minutes to scan my 1 terabyte hard disk, and compile, complete and verify the backup. That translates to 1.6 MB/sec, almost 6GB an hour, which is pretty good. This thing is fast. I have no comparison with other brands and models with USB 3.0, but this drive is worth every dollar, especially with its rebate, even if you only use it for backup, and if you want to move your DVD movie collection to BD (especially where Cyberlink lets you reprocess video), now is the time.. ... show more

  • Works great despite the odd design choices
First of all, this thing blows my old Apple "Super"drive out of the water. It's way faster reading and writing. For that reason, I'm happy with it. But... the asymmetrical front bothers me every time I look at it. It just looks like something's wrong. And that giant bright blue triangular light on the top (I covered it with electrical tape) is absolutely unnecessary. I suppose they were going for a certain style but I believe the whole thing could have been a little bit smaller if it was a simple rectangle. ... show more

  • Squeaky and vibrates, but with LibreDrive Firmware 4K UHD can be read
If you're not technical, flashing the firmware may be difficult. Used to rip my Blu Ray and 4K UHD library for PlexTV. It's a lot of time. Consider Movies Anywhere / Vudu / Prime Video :) Otherwise, PlexTV is slick. Read Blu Ray and 4K UHD (with LibreDrive firmware / Otherwise this drive will not read 4K UHD) as fast as the disk will allow. Not all blu ray disks are created equal. I'm seeing 12 MB/s all the way up to 48 MB/s depending on the blu ray disc. I have no intentions of burning Blu Ray discs so I have nothing to report on burning media. When opening and closing the drive, it's always squeaky. If the drive isn't sitting perfectly flat on a flat surface it will buzz/vibrate. The power button is a bit lame as it is located in the back and it on the top back edge and slides left and right. It's fine, just a bit odd they didn't have a rocker power switch to turn off and on. No drivers are required for Windows OS. Just plug it in and go. Haven't used it on my 13" MacBook Pro M1, yet. ... show more

  • Playing a Blu Ray movie required additional sofware
Not a bad unit. Only issue so far is that it will NOT play a Blu Ray movie straight out of the box without purchasing additional software. Thankfully I was able to get in contact with Cyberlink, the makers of PowerDVD (which is pretty much the only thing that will play a Blu Ray without having to jump through a bunch of hoops) and in the process of resolving a product key issue as I have purchased that particular software from Amazon in the past to play DVDs. ... show more

  • Reads CDs, disks and blue-rays
Blue-rays reading can be tricky since blue-rays can be read directly from windows computers. Also it reads all my disks without an issues. Good purchase and worth the money. Though it's build it bulky and it does need external power to run (plug included).

  • Works with VLC, after getting correct files. Old software
This external Bluray player/burner works fine if you get the correct and modern software. the software provided on the DVD with it is ancient, at least 5yrs old (Cyberlink Poer2Go8. Current is ver. 13) The movie player software on the disc is not compatible with Windows 11. VLC will play bluray movies you just have to download a couple of files and place them in certain directories on the C drive. (one of which is a hidden system folder) Google it on how to do it. Once that was done, had to change the Drive region in Device Manager for the drive, as it was "Not Set". Then, had to change the Region setting in VLC Advanced preferences to Region A (Default is B). Plays movies fine now. makeMKV also seems to work fine with this drive on the few older blurays i have tried with it. Requires power brick (laptop style) for power and a usb 3.0 connection. Not buss powered. ... show more
