I found myself needing a disc drive to upload some files that were sent to me on a CD to a colleague who lives in another state. I couldn’t find my drive so I bought this one. As soon as it arrived, I found my other one and was actually disappointed to have to return this one. I love the attached, embedded cord - no parts to lose and have issues securing. The cover is rough so it won’t scratch and it seemed to work as expected. I just can’t justify owning 2 for the off chance I need it once a year. The player is heavy and feels durable. The instructions for set up are almost non-existent however. After some rummaging about and many an unplugging, I discovered quite by accident, that it needs to have a disc in it to show up on your drives. It doesn't bring up any tabs or panels to choose region. You must go into the properties for the device to set your countries region. It allows 5 changes. The burner works well, if a bit louder than a built-in CD/DVD player would be. It also states that a USB extension cable is not recommended. The actual cable for this is only 6 inches long. It is shown in the images and is what they state you must use for connection to your computer/laptop. I will advise after I get an extension cable. It also states you should plug this in on the back panel of your PC. Given the short cable that is something of a joke. I purchased this to use and 6 inches don't cut it. (snicker) It however should work very well for many laptops. I haven't tested any of the other SD ports or USB ports. It is made by Mitshita so is a quality product, if online reviews are to be believed. ... show more

The drive worked perfectly right out of the package. It also gave us an adapter for the C to A USB connector/plug, along with a power cord for the 'extra power' that may be required for burning DVD or CD disks. This is quite thoughtful on the part of the manufacturer or distributor. You will need to invest into a 5V, 10-Watt power supply to power this feature if your laptop power buss cannot provide the power. Most micro-laptop computers cannot supply the power without compromising operation or performance. The only excess straw on the camel's back is the fact that we have to choose between regions for the DVD disk payback. I float between overseas and the domestic US quite often, meaning I need a player that can play any type of the disk at anytime. With the advances in technology during the past 20+ years, I would think the engineers and software/firmware writers would find a solution for this divergence in disk data formatting. What say you about this? I contacted the manufacturer/distributor's help desk on this and was informed that 'it is the way the player was manufactured/programed, there is nothing they can do about this. Meanwhile, the DVD burners could continue labeling the disk's packaging with the playback region for reference. ... show more

drive basically won't function on USB port power. i have another small usb optical drive that runs on usb port power, so i don't see why this one cannot. this drive does NOT come with a power supply, and they don't tell you before you buy it that you'll need one. waste of money. terrible idea for a laptop drive. [UPDATED] So. It shouldn't BE this way, and it's a weird mystery, but here goes. What does NOT WORK (as a simple DVD READER - the reason i purchased it) What does NOT work: plugging the drive into the new Apple Mac Mini M4 Pro's FRONT USB C ports using the drive's USB C plug, will light up the drive, but when you put a DVD into the drive, it will try to read, then the light goes out and it 'dies'. What DOES WORK: Plugging THIS drive into ANY port of an otherwise un-populated NON-POWERED 7 port Yottamaster USB 3.2 HUB where the USB hub is plugged into the SAME front USB C port(s) on a Apple Mac Mini M4 Pro. This works perfectly effortlessly quickly for PLAYING back a DVD using VLC. [that's 98% of the reason i bough the drive. I also I also tried plugging the USB C part of this drive's cord into a USB C to USB A adapter and plugging it into the NON-powered USB 3.2 7 port hub in the SAME front ports and it DOES WORK. So i don't know if the weirdness of NOT being able to plug the drive's USB C connector DIRECTLY into the Apple Mac Mini M4 Pro's FRONT USB C ports is a problem in the Apple Mac Mini M4 Pro, or if it's a problem in the DRIVE. Somebody is doing something NON-STANDARD. It's very disappointing to NOT be able to get it to work correctly while plugged DIRECTLY into the Apple Mac Mini M4 Pro's front USB C ports. I was hoping to get optical drive functionality AND get a few extra ports, AND tidy of the wiring. But this puts me in a spot where i am forced to use a USB HUB. I have NOT tested any of the other functions of this drive such as the other ports. I'd love a provable explanation for where the real issue lies. ... show more

There was no defect with the item, I had bought a homeschool typing course for my kids which is too large of a "file" to run on this drive. After troubleshooting from it not working at first (the company sent me an incredibly helpful email to help troubleshoot if we saw any issues) I came to the conclusion that it wasn't the product or my computer connecting to it, it was unable to run the CD from the size of it. Now I could be wrong but I tried everything to get it working. Again, great product.. just didn't work for me ... show more
