  • Great enclosure
this is the second vantec product I've gotten and it has one defining feature: quality. The aluminum housing feels premium and for the price it should. After assembly it worked instantly and it's rubber feet transfer none of the vibrations to and from the drive inside it. no drivers need to be installed and assembly is quick and easy if you take your time and don't rush. Only drawbacks for it is that I paid more for the enclosure than I did for the drive. The cost definitely could have been a lot less since it's just a glorified sata to usb 3.0 adapter but I admit the aluminum is elegant and well made. The other drawback is that it uses usb 3.0 type b instead of a usb c connection. I imagine a future version of the drive will come with type c but it's at least better than 2.0 speeds like i've seen with other enclosures on amazon. Overall it's a great get if you have a computer that doesn't have an internal drive bay. It's an elegant piece of hardware that looks great on my desk and it's worked pretty flawlessly. ... show more

  • Great enclosure...
Haven't had to contact tech support, so I can't speak from experience on that aspect. What I can say is that the enclosure comes with everything you need to install your drive. The USB 3 interface is fast and stable, and aluminum construction seems sturdy. The install process was a breeze. A screwdriver was included and there is a piece of foam with adhesive to hold your optical drive steady while you secure it to the enclosure. I do suggest fitting the interface board to your drive before securing it. Just slide the drive in part way and plug the SATA connector into the drive. Aligning the screws took minimal effort. Just be sure not to cross-thread them. The enclosure comes with 12 screws. Two are installed on the front bezel. Four are for mounting your drive, and 4 are for securing the interface board. The last 2 are for the front bezel. Once you have all of your hardware secured and installed, the divice is plug and play. So far, I have tested it with Windows 10. Works like a charm. The enclosure doesn't come with software, so you will need a 3rd party application to burn discs, watch movies, or listen to music. There are a number of commercial and free and/or open source options to help with that. Overall, this enclosure seems well built and functional. The USB 3 interface is fast and stable, and it works great out of the box. It is a great choice for someone looking to convert an international optical drive to an external drive. ... show more

  • Expensive, but well built and very worth the investment.
I work a lot with video and optical storage. It's hard to find a computer case that includes ODD bays and allows 280/360 AIO mounting. I've tried using an external DVD drive, but most are based on slow read & write laptop drives. This enclosure allows me to use an 5.25 internal 16X Blu-Ray/16X DVD writer I already had. The case is built of heavy aluminum with plastic end caps. Lots of internal room for even the longest drives. Installation is simple with all drive & mounting holes lining up. Win10 & 11 both recognize the drive links to standard drivers. Heavy case means even at high drive speeds the noise is low. Advertised SATA III & USB 3.0 interface speeds are more for show than real world. Real speeds will depend on your ODD drive's R/W speeds. My fast 16X BRD has a theoretical transfer rate of 60-65 MB/s (0.5 Gb/s), but on either a USB 3.0 or 2.0 port, I get 10-12 MB/s read of a SL DVD disc - the same as if hooked to an internal SATA port. Having it's own power brick means any USB port 2.0 or higher will work the same. It also means the supplied 100mm cable can be replaced without a problem - I'm using a 2 meter cable now to place ODD under my monitor and reach computer under desk. I could have gone cheaper and bought an adapter to hang on back of the drive, but I think a full enclosure like this is a good investment. ... show more

  • Fits Asus bw-16d1ht drive, replace power supply
I used makeMKV with a 42GB movie and it burned this verbatim bd-r DL disc in 26.5 mins, I saw speeds up to 8.1x using Asus bw-16d1ht inside vantec nexstar DX2 usb3 external enclosure. This is the DX2 not the original DX, I replaced the power supply with delta electronics adp-50yh B power adapter for a laptop. It supplies 12volts, 4.16amps, 50watts , connector is a perfect fit , asus fits great in the enclosure. I saw no bubbling or damage of this verbatim bd-r DL disc after the burn, someone else reviewed that their disc bubbled, that can only be from a burner that has a laser that's too strong. Get the one I use and it should work 100% Tutorial: use makemkv and select backup and check the box for decrypt these files. Use ImgBurn to burn those folders called bdmv, makemkv, certificate. It preserves all menus , subtitles, etc from the original. It will play on a PS5, which is known to not play burned Blu rays. Flash the stock 3.10 firmware with a cross patched firmware called 3.10 MK, makemkv than recognizes that libredrive is available and that microcode is enabled. *update - I bought this external case beginning of April 2023, it's now middle of Sept 2023, so about 5 months, its held up quite nice, I've ripped through 121 DVD's and 70 Blu rays with e burner and this case. The case has held up well. I did have a failure of the Asus bw-16d1ht which died pretty quick, the 2nd Asus bw-16d1ht I got has been holding okay so far however I've had to disconnect it and reconnect it a few times , it appears like it just stops being recognized possibly due to overheating. It could be because the case has not enough air flow and the drive is naturally hot, dunno. I did have to find a guy on the makemkv forum, his guide is called "Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2023", and his username is Billycar11, he makes custom flashers to enable libredrive/ microcode. The second Asus bw-16d1ht had a much more recent manufacture date which can explain why it was more reliable but would not allow me to use the 3.10 MK firmware, so Billy had to make me a custom flasher, very strange and cool , it executed using .BAT files which I haven't seen since the early years of windows. cost was like $25 but he used some strange payment app called Zelle. it updated asus to 3.11. if this drive dies he recommended pioneer drives. from reading amazon reviews the internal ones are more reliable, billy also has a list of specific models as well. oh also the delta power supply still works well -2nd update, so it's january 1st 2024, so it's been about 9 months, the 2nd Asus bw-16d1ht has been working well, no issues. It seems that the first drive I got was a lemon. This second blu ray drive has no overheating issues with the external nexstar case so my previous suspicious about the case causing the drive to overheat was wrong. Also aside from needing to disconnect and reconnect it the first few times, I no longer have to do that. I've gone through many more blu rays this thing is holding up well. Anyways I recommend this DX2 case. ... show more
