  • Best Stove for the Job
Optimus did an outstanding job of designing a stove that works well across the spectrum on multiple fuels. It easily simmers and with the fiberglass "wick" takes no time at all to get going. I purchased to be able to use it for everything from in my aircraft and use it as a preheater to taking it with me deployed. I've run it on multiple fuels that I commonly run into and will be using and had issues with a few of them, but most issues were minor. MOGAS: E10. This was by far the worst fuel. It seemed to want to spit and sputter and didn't produce a very good flame. Possibly a problem with the quality of the fuel itself. No wonder why our cars hate this stuff as well. MOGAS E0- Aircraft grade: This worked great. Quick to light and simmered well. Just beware of the gas smell that lingers behind if you spill it AVGAS 100LL: This has been one of my most common fuels to run it on. It does well on this fuel, but like any of the stoves in this class, will begin to plug the metering orifice after ~10 run time. This is easily remedied by moving the fuel needle a quick 1/4 turn, but it will soon try to clog again. Might be possible to run TCP or Decalin to help curb the issue but I have yet to try it out. It burns hot and clean. Quick to light and simmers well. I also experimented with mixing a bit of AVGAS and Kerosene to stifle the lead fouling issue but provide a quicker light in the cold weather. Will continue to use this since it is the easiest fuel to procure on long flying/camping trips. Jet A/Kerosene- Both worked awesome and these are my go to fuel. A full bottle will last a long time. Lots of heat output and simmer incredibly well. They light fine, but will take just a tad longer to get the burner preheated before the flame settles down. Diesel- Another great fuel with great energy density. Expect longer preheat times to get the burner happy to the point to where it can vaporize this heavier fuel. Nice blue flame with great control. This stove has all around exceeded expectations. Well constructed and has nice features built in with the ability to use multiple fuels, as well as multiple fuel sources. I had one issue where I purchased the stove and the next day they price was lowered. The company promptly refunded the difference to me no questions asked. ... show more

  • Perfect stove that works well
I like backpacking stoves and have a collection of older (as in 40 years or more older) and five or six MSR stoves. Also bought a primus omnifuel a couple weeks ago that failed so miserably in every category except the pump that I gave it to a passing stranger on the trail. The Optimus stove beats out the competition in every way. This stove packs small, I was torn on the wrap around legs / pot stands which is what lead me down the path to the Primus stove but after handling the Optimus I am a believer. This leg / potstand arrangement packs small and provides stability for even small pots. In comparison the MSR dragonfly and wisperlights are massive when packed and both have a hard time accepting smaller pots. The pump on the primus is nice and has a substantial feel but pales in comparison to the Optimus aluminum pump, this pump feels really nice and solid but is much heavier than the primus and MSR pumps which could be a negative if weight is your concern. For me I will take the durability and looks of the aluminum pump over plastic any day. Performance wise the Optimus is flawless, no leaks attaching or detaching the pump from the stove, the fold out legs for inverted canister use The primus is totally missing an inverted canister mode and the MSR wisperlight international requires that you use the included stand but at least MSR has an option. Then there's the single jet of the Optimus vs changing out jets on the primus and MSR stoves. Win again for Optimus! The primus burner bell became deformed during the first burn due to the spring arrangement to secure the flame spreader to the burner bell, the spring was too tight and pulled in the sides of the burner bell which effected the burn pattern. The Optimus magnetic jet cleaner and the MSR shaker jet cleaner allows the jets to be cleared without removing or adjusting the flame spreader.. both are nice solutions compared to the woefully lacking Primus option of removing the flame spreader. The Optimus flame control is spot on when simmering and has a nice pattern when running full open. After the two recent experiences I had with the Primus that resulted in no breakfast and lunch using the Optimus Polaris was a dream. I am glad to see that Optimus still has the ability to design and deliver good looking stove package that will perform as intended for years to come and to all of the design engineers at Optimus... job well done ! ... show more

  • Perfect!
I love this thing. I got it from the amazon warehouse at a discount because it was slightly damaged. It didn't effect the performance at all the functionality is flawless. Its size makes it perfect for storing in the optimus terra HE cook set that i bought to go along with it. I also purchased some adaptors so i could use the 1# propane tanks and the coleman butane fuel. I did a lot of research before choosing the optifuel and I couldn't be happier with my choice. If you've never owned this type of stove the first thing you should know it they're loud, not blow your eardrums loud but still noisy. I found this out while researching so I planned ahead and bought a dampener which makes this already awesome stove even better. It comes with everything you need to use it straight out of the box. If you just want a stove to boil water they're are cheaper options that will do the job just as well, are more compact and weigh less. I chose this one because of it versatility, reputation and design. ... show more
