It looks good on a kitchen counter top. Store peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds, table scraps, clippings and other vegetables. Later transfer to your garden compost pile. The compost keeper works best as a temporary holder for these items. Has a sturdy stainless steel handle for easy transport.Care Instructions: Hand wash composter in hot soapy water and dry thoroughly.Use replacement filter 93F. Change the filter approximately every 6 months, depending on use. That time can be affected by heat and humidity in your area. Let food cool down before putting it into the composter. Do not put hot or warm product into composter. Moisture from warm product can decrease the time for changing the filter.Each filter is 5.625” in diameter. The filter should never get wet. Do not wash and reuse the filter. The charcoal in the filter absorbs the odors and once it has fully absorbed to its maximum, discard filter. • To Replace Filter: just pull old filter out and toss. Inside replacement packet are two filters. We've owned this ceramic Norpro counter-top compost pail for over a year now and use it constantly. Norpro 1 Gallon Ceramic Compost Keeper, White We love it! We also use the Norpro carbon filter Replacement Filters for the Norpro Kitchen Compost Crock (set of 6) in the lid and the degradable compost bags, also by Norpro. Norpro Degradable Compost Bags, 50 Pieces We live in a rural area, where fruit flies, no-see-ums, and gnats can be a big problem. And it gets HOT here in the summer time! Yet we have experienced none of the problems with odor, fruit flies, or gnats that some other reviewers have described. Not once! Nor have we experienced any of the other problems mentioned by other reviewers, such as problems with the handle or chipping, poor fitting lid, etc. We especially like the size of this compost pail. It's just right for holding our compostable kitchen waste until our next trip to the garden. The liner keeps the pail clean. The liners are sized generously enough that there's no "overflow". It's easy to lift out the compost-filled liner, put a twist-tie (included with the liners) around it, and take it to the garden. We've never had a leak or split. No mess at all! And the compost pail stays clean as a whistle! It's been our experience that the filter in the lid does exactly what it's supposed to do -- unless you don't empty your compost pail when you should! (We've made that mistake a couple of times.) If you let the pail get too full and your kitchen waste come in contact with the filter, the filter will start to mold and mildew. And then you have to replace it. (Maybe that's what attracts the fruit flies, etc.?) We couldn't be happier with this product, or with its accessory products by Norpro. I use this in my kitchen for food scraps to compost. It’s a good size and doesn’t look out of place in my kitchen. Unfortunately, I wish I had read the reviews before taking it out to the compost bin. I almost dropped it because the handle slides off so easily. Fortunately, I caught it in time! My next visit to the compost bin I will take the handle off. I really like that it controls odors and it’s easier to clean. I would purchase it again. Mine is blue and white. Quality is superb, just be careful not to hit it too hard when setting it down as it has a little bit of weight to it. Easy to clean and dry.
